Chapter 1

1  Abishag cherisheth David in his extreme age.  5  Adonijah, David's darling, usurpeth the kingdom.  11  By the counsel of Nathan,  15  Bath-sheba moveth the king,  22  and Nathan secondeth her.  28  David reneweth his oath to Bath-sheba.  32  Solomon, by David's appointment, being anointed king by Zadok and Nathan, the people triumph.  41  Jonathan bringing these news, Adonijah's guests flee.  50  Adonijah, fleeing to the horns of the altar, upon his good behaviour is dismissed by Solomon.

        1:1 ¶ Now king 4428 David 1732 was old 2204 8804z [and] stricken 935 8804z in years; 3117 and they covered 3680 8762z him with clothes, 899 but he gat no heat. 3179 8799z 3808x

        1:2 Wherefore his servants 5650 said 559 8799z unto him, Let there be sought 1245 8762z for my lord 113 the king 4428 a young 5291 virgin: 1330 and let her stand 5975 8804z before 6440 the king, 4428 and let her cherish 5532 8802z him, and let her lie 7901 8804z in thy bosom, 2436 that my lord 113 the king 4428 may get heat. 2552 8804z

        1:3 So they sought 1245 8762z for a fair 3303 damsel 5291 throughout all 3605x the coasts 1366 of Israel, 3478 and found 4672 8799z 853x Abishag 49 a Shunammite, 7767 and brought 935 8686z her to the king. 4428

        1:4 And the damsel 5291 [was] very 3966 5704x fair, 3303 and cherished 5532 8802z the king, 4428 and ministered 8334 8762z to him: but the king 4428 knew 3045 8804z her not. 3808x

        1:5 ¶ Then Adonijah 138 the son 1121 of Haggith 2294 exalted 4984y 8693z himself, 4984x saying, 559 8800z I 589x will be king: 4427 8799z and he prepared 6213 8799z him chariots 7393 and horsemen, 6571 and fifty 2572 men 376 to run 7323 8801z before 6440 him.

        1:6 And his father 1 had not 3808x displeased 6087 8804z him at any time 3117 4480x in saying, 559 8800z Why 4069x hast thou done 6213x so? 6213y 8804z 3602x and he 1931x also 1571x [was a] very 3966 goodly 2896 8389 [man]; and [his mother] bare 3205 8804z him after 310 Absalom. 53

        1:7 And he conferred 1697 with 5973x Joab 3097 the son 1121 of Zeruiah, 6870 and with 5973x Abiathar 54 the priest: 3548 and they following 310 Adonijah 138 helped 5826 8799z [him].

        1:8 But Zadok 6659 the priest, 3548 and Benaiah 1141 the son 1121 of Jehoiada, 3077 and Nathan 5416 the prophet, 5030 and Shimei, 8096 and Rei, 7472 and the mighty men 1368 which 834x [belonged] to David, 1732 were 1961x not 3808x with 5973x Adonijah. 138

        1:9 And Adonijah 138 slew 2076 8799z sheep 6629 and oxen 1241 and fat cattle 4806 by 5973x the stone 68 of Zoheleth, 2120 which 834x [is] by 681 Enrogel, 5883 and called 7121 8799z 853x all 3605x his brethren 251 the king's 4428 sons, 1121 and all 3605x the men 582y 376x of Judah 3063 the king's 4428 servants: 5650

        1:10 But Nathan 5416 the prophet, 5030 and Benaiah, 1141 and the mighty men, 1368 and Solomon 8010 his brother, 251 he called 7121 8804z not. 3808x

        1:11 ¶ Wherefore Nathan 5416 spake 559 8799z unto 413x Bathsheba 1339 the mother 517 of Solomon, 8010 saying, 559 8800z Hast thou not 3808x heard 8085 8804z that 3588x Adonijah 138 the son 1121 of Haggith 2294 doth reign, 4427 8804z and David 1732 our lord 113 knoweth 3045 8804z [it] not? 3808x

        1:12 Now 6258x therefore come, 3212y 8798z 1980x let me, I pray thee, 4994x give 3289x thee counsel, 6098 3289y 8799z that thou mayest save 4422 8761z 853x thine own life, 5315 and the life 5315 of thy son 1121 Solomon. 8010

        1:13 Go 3212y 8798z 1980x and get thee in 935 8798z unto 413x king 4428 David, 1732 and say 559 8804z unto 413x him, Didst not 3808x thou, 859x my lord, 113 O king, 4428 swear 7650 8738z unto thine handmaid, 519 saying, 559 8800z Assuredly 3588 Solomon 8010 thy son 1121 shall reign 4427 8799z after 310 me, and he 1931x shall sit 3427 8799z upon 5921x my throne? 3678 why 4069x then doth Adonijah 138 reign? 4427 8804z

        1:14 Behold, 2009x while thou yet 5750x talkest 1696 8764z there 8033x with 5973x the king, 4428 I 589x also will come in 935 8799z after 310 thee, and confirm 4390 8765z 853x thy words. 1697

        1:15 ¶ And Bathsheba 1339 went in 935 8799z unto 413x the king 4428 into the chamber: 2315 and the king 4428 was very 3966 old; 2204 8804z and Abishag 49 the Shunammite 7767 ministered 8334y 8764z unto 8334x 853x the king. 4428

        1:16 And Bathsheba 1339 bowed, 6915 8799z and did obeisance 7812 8691z unto the king. 4428 And the king 4428 said, 559 8799z What 4100x wouldest thou?

        1:17 And she said 559 8799z unto him, My lord, 113 thou 859x swarest 7650 8738z by the LORD 3068 thy God 430 unto thine handmaid, 519 [saying], Assuredly 3588x Solomon 8010 thy son 1121 shall reign 4427 8799z after 310 me, and he 1931x shall sit 3427 8799z upon 5921x my throne. 3678

        1:18 And now, 6258x behold, 2009x Adonijah 138 reigneth; 4427 8804z and now, 6258x my lord 113 the king, 4428 thou knowest 3045 8804z [it] not: 3808x

        1:19 And he hath slain 2076 8799z oxen 7794 and fat cattle 4806 and sheep 6629 in abundance, 7230 and hath called 7121 8799z all 3605x the sons 1121 of the king, 4428 and Abiathar 54 the priest, 3548 and Joab 3097 the captain 8269 of the host: 6635 but Solomon 8010 thy servant 5650 hath he not 3808x called. 7121 8804z

        1:20 And thou, 859x my lord, 113 O king, 4428 the eyes 5869 of all 3605x Israel 3478 [are] upon 5921x thee, that thou shouldest tell 5046 8687z them who 4310x shall sit 3427 8799z on 5921x the throne 3678 of my lord 113 the king 4428 after 310 him.

        1:21 Otherwise it shall come to pass, 1961x when my lord 113 the king 4428 shall sleep 7901 8800z with 5973x his fathers, 1 that I 589x and my son 1121 Solomon 8010 shall be counted 1961x offenders. 2400

        1:22 ¶ And, lo, 2009x while she yet 5750x talked 1696 8764z with 5973x the king, 4428 Nathan 5416 the prophet 5030 also came in. 935 8804z

        1:23 And they told 5046 8686z the king, 4428 saying, 559 8800z Behold 2009x Nathan 5416 the prophet. 5030 And when he was come in 935 8799z before 6440 the king, 4428 he bowed 7812y 8691z himself 7812x before the king 4428 with 5921x his face 639 to the ground. 776

        1:24 And Nathan 5416 said, 559 8799z My lord, 113 O king, 4428 hast thou 859x said, 559 8804z Adonijah 138 shall reign 4427 8799z after 310 me, and he 1931x shall sit 3427 8799z upon 5921x my throne? 3678

        1:25 For 3588x he is gone down 3381 8804z this day, 3117 and hath slain 2076 8799z oxen 7794 and fat cattle 4806 and sheep 6629 in abundance, 7230 and hath called 7121 8799z all 3605x the king's 4428 sons, 1121 and the captains 8269 of the host, 6635 and Abiathar 54 the priest; 3548 and, behold, 2009x they eat 398 8802z and drink 8354 8802z before 6440 him, and say, 559 8799z God save 2421 8799z king 4428 Adonijah. 138

        1:26 But me, [even] me 589x thy servant, 5650 and Zadok 6659 the priest, 3548 and Benaiah 1141 the son 1121 of Jehoiada, 3077 and thy servant 5650 Solomon, 8010 hath he not 3808x called. 7121 8804z

        1:27 Is this 2088x thing 1697 done 1961 8738z by 4480x 854x my lord 113 the king, 4428 and thou hast not 3808x shewed 3045y 8689z [it] unto 3045x 853x thy servant, 5650 who 4310x should sit 3427 8799z on 5921x the throne 3678 of my lord 113 the king 4428 after 310 him?

        1:28 ¶ Then king 4428 David 1732 answered 6030 8799z and said, 559 8799z Call 7121 8798z me Bathsheba. 1339 And she came 935y 8799z into 935x the king's 4428 presence, 6440 and stood 5975 8799z before 6440 the king. 4428

        1:29 And the king 4428 sware, 7650 8735z and said, 559 8799z [As] the LORD 3068 liveth, 2416 that 834x hath redeemed 6299 8804z 853x my soul 5315 out of all 4480x 3605x distress, 6869

        1:30 Even 3588x as 834x I sware 7650 8738z unto thee by the LORD 3068 God 430 of Israel, 3478 saying, 559 8800z Assuredly 3588x Solomon 8010 thy son 1121 shall reign 4427 8799z after 310 me, and he 1931x shall sit 3427 8799z upon 5921x my throne 3678 in my stead; 8478x even 3588x so 3651x will I certainly do 6213 8799z this 2088x day. 3117

        1:31 Then Bathsheba 1339 bowed 6915 8799z with [her] face 639 to the earth, 776 and did reverence 7812 8691z to the king, 4428 and said, 559 8799z Let my lord 113 king 4428 David 1732 live 2421 8799z for ever. 5769

        1:32 ¶ And king 4428 David 1732 said, 559 8799z Call 7121 8798z me Zadok 6659 the priest, 3548 and Nathan 5416 the prophet, 5030 and Benaiah 1141 the son 1121 of Jehoiada. 3077 And they came 935 8799z before 6440 the king. 4428

        1:33 The king 4428 also said 559 8799z unto them, Take 3947 8798z with 5973x you 853x the servants 5650 of your lord, 113 and cause 853x Solomon 8010 my son 1121 to ride 7392 8689z upon 5921x mine own mule, 6506 and bring him down 3381 8689z 853x to 413x Gihon: 1521

        1:34 And let Zadok 6659 the priest 3548 and Nathan 5416 the prophet 5030 anoint 4886 8804z him there 8033x king 4428 over 5921x Israel: 3478 and blow 8628 8804z ye with the trumpet, 7782 and say, 559 8804z God save 2421 8799z king 4428 Solomon. 8010

        1:35 Then ye shall come up 5927 8804z after 310 him, that he may come 935 8804z and sit 3427 8804z upon 5921x my throne; 3678 for he 1931x shall be king 4427 8799z in my stead: 8478x and I have appointed 6680 8765z him to be 1961x ruler 5057 over 5921x Israel 3478 and over 5921x Judah. 3063

        1:36 And Benaiah 1141 the son 1121 of Jehoiada 3077 answered 6030 8799z 853x the king, 4428 and said, 559 8799z Amen: 543 the LORD 3068 God 430 of my lord 113 the king 4428 say 559 8799z so 3651x [too].

        1:37 As 834x the LORD 3068 hath been 1961x with 5973x my lord 113 the king, 4428 even so 3651x be 1961x he with 5973x Solomon, 8010 and make 1431y 0z his throne 3678y greater 1431 8762z 853x 3678x than the throne 3678 4480x of my lord 113 king 4428 David. 1732

        1:38 So Zadok 6659 the priest, 3548 and Nathan 5416 the prophet, 5030 and Benaiah 1141 the son 1121 of Jehoiada, 3077 and the Cherethites, 3774 and the Pelethites, 6432 went down, 3381 8799z and caused 853x Solomon 8010 to ride 7392 8686z upon 5921x king 4428 David's 1732 mule, 6506 and brought 3212y 8686z 1980x him to 5921x Gihon. 1521

        1:39 And Zadok 6659 the priest 3548 took 3947 8799z 853x an horn 7161 of oil 8081 out of 4480x the tabernacle, 168 and anointed 4886 8799z 853x Solomon. 8010 And they blew 8628 8799z the trumpet; 7782 and all 3605x the people 5971 said, 559 8799z God save 2421 8799z king 4428 Solomon. 8010

        1:40 And all 3605x the people 5971 came up 5927 8799z after 310 him, and the people 5971 piped 2490 8764z with pipes, 2485 and rejoiced 8056 with great 1419 joy, 8057 so that the earth 776 rent 1234 8735z with the sound 6963 of them.

        1:41 ¶ And Adonijah 138 and all 3605x the guests 7121 8803z that 834x [were] with 854x him heard 8085 8799z [it] as they 1992x had made an end 3615 8765z of eating. 398 8800z And when Joab 3097 heard 8085 8799z 853x the sound 6963 of the trumpet, 7782 he said, 559 8799z Wherefore 4069x [is this] noise 6963 of the city 7151 being in an uproar? 1993 8802z

        1:42 And while he yet 5750x spake, 1696 8764z behold, 2009x Jonathan 3129 the son 1121 of Abiathar 54 the priest 3548 came: 935 8804z and Adonijah 138 said 559 8799z unto him, Come in; 935 8798z for 3588x thou 859x [art] a valiant 2428 man, 376 8676z 381y and bringest 1319y 0z good 2896y tidings. 1319 8762z 2896x

        1:43 And Jonathan 3129 answered 6030 8799z and said 559 8799z to Adonijah, 138 Verily 61 our lord 113 king 4428 David 1732 hath made Solomon 8010y king. 4427 8689z 853x 8010x

        1:44 And the king 4428 hath sent 7971 8799z with 854x him 853x Zadok 6659 the priest, 3548 and Nathan 5416 the prophet, 5030 and Benaiah 1141 the son 1121 of Jehoiada, 3077 and the Cherethites, 3774 and the Pelethites, 6432 and they have caused him to ride 7392 8686z 853x upon 5921x the king's 4428 mule: 6506

        1:45 And Zadok 6659 the priest 3548 and Nathan 5416 the prophet 5030 have anointed 4886 8799z him king 4428 in Gihon: 1521 and they are come up 5927 8799z from thence 4480x 8033x rejoicing, 8056 so that the city 7151 rang 1949x again. 1949y 8735z This 1931x [is] the noise 6963 that 834x ye have heard. 8085 8804z

        1:46 And also 1571x Solomon 8010 sitteth 3427 8804z on 5921x the throne 3678 of the kingdom. 4410

        1:47 And moreover 1571x the king's 4428 servants 5650 came 935 8804z to bless 1288 8763z 853x our lord 113 king 4428 David, 1732 saying, 559 8800z God 430 make 853x the name 8034 of Solomon 8010 better 3190 8686z than thy name, 8034 4480x and make 1431y 0z 853x his throne 3678 greater 1431 8762z than thy throne. 3678 4480x And the king 4428 bowed 7812y 8691z himself 7812x upon 5921x the bed. 4904

        1:48 And also 1571x thus 3602x said 559 8804z the king, 4428 Blessed 1288 8803z [be] the LORD 3068 God 430 of Israel, 3478 which 834x hath given 5414 8804z [one] to sit 3427 8802z on 5921x my throne 3678 this day, 3117 mine eyes 5869 even seeing 7200 8802z [it].

        1:49 And all 3605x the guests 7121 8803z that 834x [were] with Adonijah 138 were afraid, 2729 8799z and rose up, 6965 8799z and went 3212y 8799z 1980x every man 376 his way. 1870

        1:50 ¶ And Adonijah 138 feared 3372 8804z because 6440 4480x of Solomon, 8010 and arose, 6965 8799z and went, 3212y 8799z 1980x and caught hold 2388 8686z on the horns 7161 of the altar. 4196

        1:51 And it was told 5046 8714z Solomon, 8010 saying, 559 8800z Behold, 2009x Adonijah 138 feareth 3372 8804z 853x king 4428 Solomon: 8010 for, lo, 2009x he hath caught hold 270 8804z on the horns 7161 of the altar, 4196 saying, 559 8800z Let king 4428 Solomon 8010 swear 7650 8735z unto me to day 3117 that he will not 518x slay 4191 8686z 853x his servant 5650 with the sword. 2719

        1:52 And Solomon 8010 said, 559 8799z If 518x he will shew 1961x himself a worthy 2428 man, 1121 there shall not 3808x an hair 8185y of 4480x 8183x him fall 5307 8799z to the earth: 776 but if 518x wickedness 7451 shall be found 4672 8735z in him, he shall die. 4191 8804z

        1:53 So king 4428 Solomon 8010 sent, 7971 8799z and they brought him down 3381 8686z from 4480x 5921x the altar. 4196 And he came 935 8799z and bowed 7812y 8691z himself 7812x to king 4428 Solomon: 8010 and Solomon 8010 said 559 8799z unto him, Go 3212y 8798z 1980x to thine house. 1004
