1 Samuel

Chapter 16

1  Samuel sent by God, under pretence of a sacrifice, cometh to Beth-lehem.  6  His human judgment is reproved.  13  He anointeth David.  19  Saul sendeth for David to quiet his evil spirit.

16:1 ¶ And the LORD {3068} said {559} <8799> unto (413) Samuel, {8050} How long (5704) (4100) wilt thou (859) mourn {56} <8693> for (413) Saul, {7586} seeing I (589) have rejected {3988} <8804> him from reigning {4427} <8800> (4480) over (5921) Israel? {3478} fill {4390} <8761> thine horn {7161} with oil, {8081} and go, [3212] <8798> (1980) I will send {7971} <8799> thee to (413) Jesse {3448} the Bethlehemite: {1022} for (3588) I have provided {7200} <8804> me a king {4428} among his sons. {1121}

16:2 And Samuel {8050} said, {559} <8799> How (349) can I go? [3212] <8799> (1980) if Saul {7586} hear {8085} <8804> [it], he will kill {2026} <8804> me. And the LORD {3068} said, {559} <8799> Take {3947} <8799> an heifer {1241} {5697} with (3027) thee, [3027] and say, {559} <8804> I am come {935} <8804> to sacrifice {2076} <8800> to the LORD. {3068}

16:3 And call {7121} <8804> Jesse {3448} to the sacrifice, {2077} and I (595) will shew {3045} <8686> thee (853) what (834) thou shalt do: {6213} <8799> and thou shalt anoint {4886} <8804> unto me [him] (853) whom (834) I name {559} <8799> unto (413) thee.

16:4 And Samuel {8050} did {6213} <8799> (853) that which (834) the LORD {3068} spake, {1696} <8765> and came {935} <8799> to Bethlehem. {1035} And the elders {2205} of the town {5892} trembled {2729} <8799> at his coming, [7125] <8800> (7122) and said, {559} <8799> Comest {935} <8800> thou peaceably? {7965}

16:5 And he said, {559} <8799> Peaceably: {7965} I am come {935} <8804> to sacrifice {2076} <8800> unto the LORD: {3068} sanctify [6942] <8690> yourselves, (6942) and come {935} <8804> with (854) me to the sacrifice. {2077} And he sanctified {6942} <8762> (853) Jesse {3448} and his sons, {1121} and called {7121} <8799> them to the sacrifice. {2077}

16:6 ¶ And it came to pass, (1961) when they were come, {935} <8800> that he looked [7200] <8799> on (7200) (853) Eliab, {446} and said, {559} <8799> Surely (389) the LORD'S {3068} anointed {4899} [is] before (5048) him.

16:7 But the LORD {3068} said {559} <8799> unto (413) Samuel, {8050} Look {5027} <8686> not (408) on (413) his countenance, {4758} or on (413) the height {1364} of his stature; {6967} because (3588) I have refused {3988} <8804> him: for (3588) [the LORD seeth] not (3808) as (834) man {120} seeth; {7200} <8799> for (3588) man {120} looketh {7200} <8799> on the outward appearance, {5869} but the LORD {3068} looketh {7200} <8799> on the heart. {3824}

16:8 Then Jesse {3448} called {7121} <8799> (413) Abinadab, {41} and made him pass {5674} <8686> before {6440} Samuel. {8050} And he said, {559} <8799> Neither (1571) (3808) hath the LORD {3068} chosen {977} <8804> this. (2088)

16:9 Then Jesse {3448} made Shammah {8048} to pass by. {5674} <8686> And he said, {559} <8799> Neither (1571) (3808) hath the LORD {3068} chosen {977} <8804> this. (2088)

16:10 Again, Jesse {3448} made seven {7651} of his sons {1121} to pass {5674} <8686> before {6440} Samuel. {8050} And Samuel {8050} said {559} <8799> unto (413) Jesse, {3448} The LORD {3068} hath not (3808) chosen {977} <8804> these. (428)

16:11 And Samuel {8050} said {559} <8799> unto (413) Jesse, {3448} Are here all {8552} <8804> [thy] children? {5288} And he said, {559} <8799> There remaineth {7604} <8804> yet (5750) the youngest, {6996} and, behold, (2009) he keepeth {7462} <8802> the sheep. {6629} And Samuel {8050} said {559} <8799> unto (413) Jesse, {3448} Send {7971} <8798> and fetch {3947} <8798> him: for (3588) we will not (3808) sit down {5437} <8799> till (5704) he come {935} <8800> hither. {6311}

16:12 And he sent, {7971} <8799> and brought (935) him in. [935] <8686> Now he (1931) [was] ruddy, {132} [and] withal {5973} of a beautiful {3303} countenance, {5869} and goodly {2896} to look to. {7210} And the LORD {3068} said, {559} <8799> Arise, {6965} <8798> anoint {4886} <8798> him: for (3588) this (2088) [is] he. (1931)

16:13 Then Samuel {8050} took {3947} <8799> (853) the horn {7161} of oil, {8081} and anointed {4886} <8799> him in the midst {7130} of his brethren: {251} and the Spirit {7307} of the LORD {3068} came {6743} <8799> upon (413) David {1732} from that day {3117} (4480) (1931) forward. {4605} So Samuel {8050} rose up, {6965} <8799> and went [3212] <8799> (1980) to Ramah. {7414}

16:14 ¶ But the Spirit {7307} of the LORD {3068} departed {5493} <8804> from (4480) (5973) Saul, {7586} and an evil {7451} spirit {7307} from (4480) (854) the LORD {3068} troubled {1204} <8765> him.

16:15 And Saul's {7586} servants {5650} said {559} <8799> unto (413) him, Behold (2009) now, (4994) an evil {7451} spirit {7307} from God {430} troubleth {1204} <8764> thee.

16:16 Let our lord {113} now (4994) command {559} <8799> thy servants, {5650} [which are] before {6440} thee, to seek out {1245} <8762> a man, {376} [who is] a cunning {3045} <8802> player {5059} <8764> on an harp: {3658} and it shall come to pass, (1961) when (1961) the evil {7451} spirit {7307} from God {430} is upon (5921) thee, that he shall play {5059} <8765> with his hand, {3027} and thou shalt be well. {2895} <8804>

16:17 And Saul {7586} said {559} <8799> unto (413) his servants, {5650} Provide {7200} <8798> me now (4994) a man {376} that can play {5059} <8763> well, {3190} <8688> and bring {935} <8689> [him] to (413) me.

16:18 Then answered {6030} <8799> one {259} of the servants, {5288} and said, {559} <8799> Behold, (2009) I have seen {7200} <8804> a son {1121} of Jesse {3448} the Bethlehemite, {1022} [that is] cunning {3045} <8802> in playing, {5059} <8763> and a mighty {1368} valiant man, {2428} and a man {376} of war, {4421} and prudent {995} <8737> in matters, {1697} and a comely {8389} person, {376} and the LORD {3068} [is] with (5973) him.

16:19 ¶ Wherefore Saul {7586} sent {7971} <8799> messengers {4397} unto (413) Jesse, {3448} and said, {559} <8799> Send {7971} <8798> me (853) David {1732} thy son, {1121} which (834) [is] with the sheep. {6629}

16:20 And Jesse {3448} took {3947} <8799> an ass {2543} [laden] with bread, {3899} and a bottle {4997} of wine, {3196} and a {259} kid, {1423} {5795} and sent {7971} <8799> [them] by {3027} David {1732} his son {1121} unto (413) Saul. {7586}

16:21 And David {1732} came {935} <8799> to (413) Saul, {7586} and stood {5975} <8799> before {6440} him: and he loved {157} <8799> him greatly; {3966} and he became (1961) his armourbearer. {5375} {3627} <8802>

16:22 And Saul {7586} sent {7971} <8799> to (413) Jesse, {3448} saying, {559} <8800> Let David, {1732} I pray thee, (4994) stand {5975} <8799> before {6440} me; for (3588) he hath found {4672} <8804> favour {2580} in my sight. {5869}

16:23 And it came to pass, (1961) when (1961) the [evil] spirit {7307} from God {430} was upon (413) Saul, {7586} that David {1732} took {3947} <8804> (853) an harp, {3658} and played {5059} <8765> with his hand: {3027} so Saul {7586} was refreshed, {7304} <8804> and was well, {2895} <8804> and the evil {7451} spirit {7307} departed {5493} <8804> from (4480) (5921) him.
