1 Samuel

Chapter 21

1  David at Nob obtaineth of Ahimelech hallowed bread.  7  Doeg was present.  8  David taketh Goliath's sword.  10  David at Gath feigneth himself mad.

21:1 ¶ Then came {935} <8799> David {1732} to Nob {5011} to (413) Ahimelech {288} the priest: {3548} and Ahimelech {288} was afraid {2729} <8799> at the meeting {7125} <8800> of David, {1732} and said {559} <8799> unto him, Why (4069) [art] thou (859) alone, (905) and no (369) man {376} with (854) thee?

21:2 And David {1732} said {559} <8799> unto Ahimelech {288} the priest, {3548} The king {4428} hath commanded {6680} <8765> me a business, {1697} and hath said {559} <8799> unto (413) me, Let no (408) man {376} know {3045} <8799> any thing {3972} of (853) the business {1697} whereabout (834) I (595) send {7971} <8802> thee, and what (834) I have commanded {6680} <8765> thee: and I have appointed {3045} <8776> [my] servants {5288} to (413) such {6423} and such {492} a place. {4725}

21:3 Now (6258) therefore what (4100) is {3426} under (8478) thine hand? {3027} give {5414} <8798> [me] five {2568} [loaves of] bread {3899} in mine hand, {3027} or (176) what there is present. {4672} <8737>

21:4 And the priest {3548} answered {6030} <8799> (853) David, {1732} and said, {559} <8799> [There is] no (369) common {2455} bread {3899} under (413) (8478) mine hand, {3027} but (3588) (518) there is {3426} hallowed {6944} bread; {3899} if (518) the young men {5288} have kept [8104] <8738> themselves (8104) at least {389} from women. {802} (4480)

21:5 And David {1732} answered {6030} <8799> (853) the priest, {3548} and said {559} <8799> unto him, Of (3588) (518) a truth [518] women {802} [have been] kept {6113} <8803> from us about these three {8032} days, {8543} since I came out, {3318} <8800> and the vessels {3627} of the young men {5288} are holy, {6944} and [the bread is] in a manner {1870} common, {2455} yea, (637) though (3588) it were sanctified {6942} <8799> this day {3117} in the vessel. {3627}

21:6 So the priest {3548} gave {5414} <8799> him hallowed {6944} [bread]: for (3588) there was (1961) no (3808) bread {3899} there (8033) but (3588) (518) the shewbread, {3899} {6440} that was taken {5493} <8716> from before {6440} (4480) the LORD, {3068} to put {7760} <8800> hot {2527} bread {3899} in the day {3117} when it was taken away. {3947} <8736>

21:7 Now a certain man {376} of the servants {5650} (4480) of Saul {7586} [was] there (8033) that (1931) day, {3117} detained {6113} <8737> before {6440} the LORD; {3068} and his name {8034} [was] Doeg, {1673} an Edomite, {130} the chiefest {47} of the herdmen {7462} <8802> that (834) [belonged] to Saul. {7586}

21:8 ¶ And David {1732} said {559} <8799> unto Ahimelech, {288} And is there {3426} not {371} here (6311) under (8478) thine hand {3027} spear {2595} or (176) sword? {2719} for (3588) I have neither (1571) (3808) brought {3947} <8804> my sword {2719} nor (1571) my weapons {3627} with (3027) me, [3027] because (3588) the king's {4428} business {1697} required {1961} <8804> haste. {5169} <8803>

21:9 And the priest {3548} said, {559} <8799> The sword {2719} of Goliath {1555} the Philistine, {6430} whom (834) thou slewest {5221} <8689> in the valley {6010} of Elah, {425} behold, (2009) it (1931) [is here] wrapped {3874} <8803> in a cloth {8071} behind {310} the ephod: {646} if (518) thou wilt take {3947} <8799> that, take {3947} <8798> [it]: for (3588) [there is] no (369) other {312} save {2108} that here. {2088} And David {1732} said, {559} <8799> [There is] none (369) like that; give {5414} <8798> it me.

21:10 ¶ And David {1732} arose, {6965} <8799> and fled {1272} <8799> that (1931) day {3117} for fear [6440] of (4480) (6440) Saul, {7586} and went {935} <8799> to (413) Achish {397} the king {4428} of Gath. {1661}

21:11 And the servants {5650} of Achish {397} said {559} <8799> unto (413) him, [Is] not (3808) this (2088) David {1732} the king {4428} of the land? {776} did they not (3808) sing [6030] <8799> one to another (6030) of him {2088} in dances, {4246} saying, {559} <8800> Saul {7586} hath slain {5221} <8689> his thousands, {505} and David {1732} his ten thousands? {7233}

21:12 And David {1732} laid up {7760} <8799> (853) these (428) words {1697} in his heart, {3824} and was sore {3966} afraid {3372} <8799> of {6440} (4480) Achish {397} the king {4428} of Gath. {1661}

21:13 And he changed {8138} <8762> (853) his behaviour {2940} before {5869} them, and feigned himself mad {1984} <8704> in their hands, {3027} and scrabbled {8427} <8762> on (5921) the doors {1817} of the gate, {8179} and let his spittle {7388} fall down {3381} <8686> upon (413) his beard. {2206}

21:14 Then said {559} <8799> Achish {397} unto (413) his servants, {5650} Lo, (2009) ye see {7200} <8799> the man {376} is mad: {7696} <8693> wherefore (4100) [then] have ye brought {935} <8686> him to (413) me?

21:15 Have I (589) need {2638} of mad men, {7696} <8794> that (3588) ye have brought {935} <8689> (853) this (2088) [fellow] to play the mad man {7696} <8692> in my presence? (5921) shall this (2088) [fellow] come {935} <8799> into (413) my house? {1004}
