Chapter 22

1  Companies resort unto David at Adullam.  3  At Mizpeh he commendeth his parents unto the king of Moab.  5  Admonished by Gad, he cometh to Hareth.  6  Saul, going to pursue him, complaineth of his servants' unfaithfulness.  9  Doeg accuseth Ahimelech.  11  Saul commandeth to kill the priests.  17  The footmen refusing, Doeg executeth it.  20  Abiathar escaping, bringeth David the news.

22:1 ¶ David {1732} therefore departed [3212] <8799> (1980) thence, (4480) (8033) and escaped {4422} <8735> to (413) the cave {4631} Adullam: {5725} and when his brethren {251} and all (3605) his father's {1} house {1004} heard {8085} <8799> [it], they went down {3381} <8799> thither (8033) to (413) him.

22:2 And every (3605) one {376} [that was] in distress, {4689} and every (3605) one {376} that (834) [was] in debt, {5378} <8801> and every (3605) one {376} [that was] discontented, {4751} {5315} gathered [6908] <8691> themselves (6908) unto (413) him; and he became (1961) a captain {8269} over (5921) them: and there were (1961) with (5973) him about four {702} hundred {3967} men. {376}

22:3 ¶ And David {1732} went [3212] <8799> (1980) thence (4480) (8033) to Mizpeh {4708} of Moab: {4124} and he said {559} <8799> unto (413) the king {4428} of Moab, {4124} Let my father {1} and my mother, {517} I pray thee, (4994) come forth, {3318} <8799> [and be] with (854) you, till (5704) (834) I know {3045} <8799> what (4100) God {430} will do {6213} <8799> for me.

22:4 And he brought {5148} <8686> them (853) before {6440} the king {4428} of Moab: {4124} and they dwelt {3427} <8799> with (5973) him all (3605) the while {3117} that David {1732} was (1961) in the hold. {4686}

22:5 ¶ And the prophet {5030} Gad {1410} said {559} <8799> unto (413) David, {1732} Abide {3427} <8799> not (3808) in the hold; {4686} depart, [3212] <8798> (1980) and get {935} <8804> thee into the land {776} of Judah. {3063} Then David {1732} departed, [3212] <8799> (1980) and came {935} <8799> into the forest {3293} of Hareth. {2802}

22:6 ¶ When Saul {7586} heard {8085} <8799> that (3588) David {1732} was discovered, {3045} <8738> and the men [582] (376) that (834) [were] with (854) him, (now Saul {7586} abode {3427} <8802> in Gibeah {1390} under (8478) a tree {815} in Ramah, {7414} having his spear {2595} in his hand, {3027} and all (3605) his servants {5650} [were] standing {5324} <8737> about (5921) him;)

22:7 Then Saul {7586} said {559} <8799> unto his servants {5650} that stood {5324} <8737> about (5921) him, Hear (8085) now, [8085] <8798> (4994) ye Benjamites; {1145} will the son {1121} of Jesse {3448} give {5414} <8799> every one (3605) of you fields {7704} and vineyards, {3754} [and] make {7760} <8799> you all (3605) captains {8269} of thousands, {505} and captains {8269} of hundreds; {3967}

22:8 That (3588) all (3605) of you have conspired {7194} <8804> against (5921) me, and [there is] none (369) that sheweth {1540} {241} <8802> (853) me that my son {1121} hath made a league {3772} <8800> with (5973) the son {1121} of Jesse, {3448} and [there is] none (369) of (4480) you that is sorry {2470} <8802> for (5921) me, or sheweth [1540] <8802> [241] unto (1540) (853) (241) me that (3588) my son {1121} hath stirred up {6965} <8689> (853) my servant {5650} against (5921) me, to lie in wait, {693} <8802> as at this (2088) day? {3117}

22:9 ¶ Then answered {6030} <8799> Doeg {1673} the Edomite, {130} which (1931) was set {5324} <8737> over (5921) the servants {5650} of Saul, {7586} and said, {559} <8799> I saw {7200} <8804> (853) the son {1121} of Jesse {3448} coming {935} <8802> to Nob, {5011} to (413) Ahimelech {288} the son {1121} of Ahitub. {285}

22:10 And he enquired {7592} <8799> of the LORD {3068} for him, and gave {5414} <8804> him victuals, {6720} and gave {5414} <8804> him the sword {2719} of Goliath {1555} the Philistine. {6430}

22:11 Then the king {4428} sent {7971} <8799> to call {7121} <8800> (853) Ahimelech {288} the priest, {3548} the son {1121} of Ahitub, {285} and all (3605) his father's {1} house, {1004} the priests {3548} that (834) [were] in Nob: {5011} and they came {935} <8799> all (3605) of them to (413) the king. {4428}

22:12 And Saul {7586} said, {559} <8799> Hear {8085} <8798> now, (4994) thou son {1121} of Ahitub. {285} And he answered, {559} <8799> Here (2009) I [am], my lord. {113}

22:13 And Saul {7586} said {559} <8799> unto (413) him, Why (4100) have ye conspired {7194} <8804> against (5921) me, thou (859) and the son {1121} of Jesse, {3448} in that thou hast given {5414} <8800> him bread, {3899} and a sword, {2719} and hast enquired {7592} <8800> of God {430} for him, that he should rise {6965} <8800> against (413) me, to lie in wait, {693} <8802> as at this (2088) day? {3117}

22:14 Then Ahimelech {288} answered {6030} <8799> (853) the king, {4428} and said, {559} <8799> And who (4310) [is so] faithful {539} <8737> among all (3605) thy servants {5650} as David, {1732} which is the king's {4428} son in law, {2860} and goeth {5493} <8804> at (413) thy bidding, {4928} and is honourable {3513} <8737> in thine house? {1004}

22:15 Did I then {3117} begin {2490} <8689> to enquire {7592} <8800> of God {430} for him? be it far (2486) from me: [2486] let not (408) the king {4428} impute {7760} <8799> [any] thing {1697} unto his servant, {5650} [nor] to all (3605) the house {1004} of my father: {1} for (3588) thy servant {5650} knew {3045} <8804> nothing [1697] (3808) of all (3605) this, (2063) less {6996} or (176) more. {1419}

22:16 And the king {4428} said, {559} <8799> Thou shalt surely [4191] <8800> die, {4191} <8799> Ahimelech, {288} thou, (859) and all (3605) thy father's {1} house. {1004}

22:17 ¶ And the king {4428} said {559} <8799> unto the footmen {7323} <8801> that stood {5324} <8737> about (5921) him, Turn, {5437} <8798> and slay {4191} <8685> the priests {3548} of the LORD; {3068} because (3588) their hand {3027} also (1571) [is] with (5973) David, {1732} and because (3588) they knew {3045} <8804> when (3588) he (1931) fled, {1272} <8802> and did not (3808) shew {1540} <8804> [241] (853) it to me. (241) But the servants {5650} of the king {4428} would {14} <8804> not (3808) put forth {7971} <8800> (853) their hand {3027} to fall {6293} <8800> upon the priests {3548} of the LORD. {3068}

22:18 And the king {4428} said {559} <8799> to Doeg, {1673} Turn {5437} <8798> thou, (859) and fall {6293} <8798> upon the priests. {3548} And Doeg {1673} the Edomite {130} turned, {5437} <8735> and he (1931) fell {6293} <8799> upon the priests, {3548} and slew {4191} <8686> on that (1931) day {3117} fourscore {8084} and five {2568} persons {376} that did wear {5375} <8802> a linen {906} ephod. {646}

22:19 And Nob, {5011} the city {5892} of the priests, {3548} smote {5221} <8689> he with the edge {6310} of the sword, {2719} both men {376} (4480) and women, {802} children {5768} (4480) and sucklings, {3243} <8802> and oxen, {7794} and asses, {2543} and sheep, {7716} with the edge {6310} of the sword. {2719}

22:20 ¶ And one {259} of the sons {1121} of Ahimelech {288} the son {1121} of Ahitub, {285} named {8034} Abiathar, {54} escaped, {4422} <8735> and fled {1272} <8799> after {310} David. {1732}

22:21 And Abiathar {54} shewed {5046} <8686> David {1732} that (3588) Saul {7586} had slain {2026} <8804> (853) the LORD'S {3068} priests. {3548}

22:22 And David {1732} said {559} <8799> unto Abiathar, {54} I knew {3045} <8804> [it] that (1931) day, {3117} when (3588) Doeg {1673} the Edomite {130} [was] there, (8033) that (3588) he would surely [5046] <8687> tell {5046} <8686> Saul: {7586} I (595) have occasioned {5437} <8804> [the death] of all (3605) the persons {5315} of thy father's {1} house. {1004}

22:23 Abide {3427} <8798> thou with (854) me, fear {3372} <8799> not: (408) for (3588) he that (834) seeketh {1245} <8762> (853) my life {5315} seeketh {1245} <8762> (853) thy life: {5315} but (3588) with (5973) me thou (859) [shalt be] in safeguard. {4931}
