Chapter 5

1  The Philistines having brought the Ark into Ashdod set it in the house of Dagon.  3  Dagon is smitten down and cut in pieces, and they of Ashdod smitten with emerods.  8  So God dealeth with them of Gath, when it was brought thither:  10  and so with them of Ekron, when it was brought thither.

5:1 ¶ And the Philistines {6430} took {3947} <8804> (853) the ark {727} of God, {430} and brought {935} <8686> it from Ebenezer {72} (4480) unto Ashdod. {795}

5:2 When the Philistines {6430} took {3947} <8799> (853) the ark {727} of God, {430} they brought {935} <8686> it into the house {1004} of Dagon, {1712} and set {3322} <8686> it by {681} Dagon. {1712}

5:3 ¶ And when they of Ashdod [796] (795) arose early {7925} <8686> on the morrow, {4283} (4480) behold, (2009) Dagon {1712} [was] fallen {5307} <8802> upon his face {6440} to the earth {776} before {6440} the ark {727} of the LORD. {3068} And they took {3947} <8799> (853) Dagon, {1712} and set {7725} <0> him in his place {4725} again. [7725] <8686>

5:4 And when they arose early {7925} <8686> on the morrow {4283} (4480) morning, {1242} behold, (2009) Dagon {1712} [was] fallen {5307} <8802> upon his face {6440} to the ground {776} before {6440} the ark {727} of the LORD; {3068} and the head {7218} of Dagon {1712} and both {8147} the palms {3709} of his hands {3027} [were] cut off {3772} <8803> upon (413) the threshold; {4670} only (7535) [the stump of] Dagon {1712} was left {7604} <8738> to (5921) him.

5:5 Therefore (5921) (3651) neither (3808) the priests {3548} of Dagon, {1712} nor any (3605) that come {935} <8802> into Dagon's {1712} house, {1004} tread {1869} <8799> on (5921) the threshold {4670} of Dagon {1712} in Ashdod {795} unto (5704) this (2088) day. {3117}

5:6 But the hand {3027} of the LORD {3068} was heavy {3513} <8799> upon (413) them of Ashdod, [796] (795) and he destroyed {8074} <8686> them, and smote {5221} <8686> them with emerods, {6076} [2914] k8675- [even] (853) Ashdod {795} and the coasts {1366} thereof.

5:7 And when the men [582] (376) of Ashdod {795} saw {7200} <8799> that (3588) [it was] so, (3651) they said, {559} <8804> The ark {727} of the God {430} of Israel {3478} shall not (3808) abide {3427} <8799> with (5973) us: for (3588) his hand {3027} is sore {7185} <8804> upon (5921) us, and upon (5921) Dagon {1712} our god. {430}

5:8 They sent {7971} <8799> therefore and gathered {622} <8799> (853) all (3605) the lords {5633} of the Philistines {6430} unto (413) them, and said, {559} <8799> What (4100) shall we do {6213} <8799> with the ark {727} of the God {430} of Israel? {3478} And they answered, {559} <8799> Let the ark {727} of the God {430} of Israel {3478} be carried about {5437} <8735> unto Gath. {1661} And they carried {5437} <0> (853) the ark {727} of the God {430} of Israel {3478} about [5437] <8686> [thither].

5:9 And it was (1961) [so], that, after {310} they had carried it about, {5437} <8689> (853) the hand {3027} of the LORD {3068} was (1961) against the city {5892} with a very {3966} great {1419} destruction: {4103} and he smote {5221} <8686> (853) the men [582] (376) of the city, {5892} both small {6996} (4480) and great, {1419} and they had emerods {6076} [2914] k8675- in their secret parts. {8368} <8735>

5:10 ¶ Therefore they sent {7971} <8762> (853) the ark {727} of God {430} to Ekron. {6138} And it came to pass, (1961) as the ark {727} of God {430} came {935} <8800> to Ekron, {6138} that the Ekronites {6139} cried out, {2199} <8799> saying, {559} <8800> They have brought about {5437} <8689> (853) the ark {727} of the God {430} of Israel {3478} to (413) us, to slay {4191} <8687> us and our people. {5971}

5:11 So they sent {7971} <8799> and gathered together {622} <8799> (853) all (3605) the lords {5633} of the Philistines, {6430} and said, {559} <8799> Send away {7971} <8761> (853) the ark {727} of the God {430} of Israel, {3478} and let it go again {7725} <8799> to his own place, {4725} that it slay {4191} <8686> us not, (3808) and our people: {5971} for (3588) there was (1961) a deadly {4194} destruction {4103} throughout all (3605) the city; {5892} the hand {3027} of God {430} was very {3966} heavy {3513} <8804> there. (8033)

5:12 And the men [582] (376) that (834) died {4191} <8804> not (3808) were smitten {5221} <8717> with the emerods: {6076} [2914] k8675- and the cry {7775} of the city {5892} went up {5927} <8799> to heaven. {8064}
