1 Samuel

Chapter 6

1  After seven months the Philistines take counsel how to send back the Ark.  10  They bring it on a new cart with an offering unto Beth-shemesh.  19  The people are smitten for looking into the Ark.  21  They send to them of Kirjath-Jearim to fetch it.

6:1 ¶ And the ark {727} of the LORD {3068} was (1961) in the country {7704} of the Philistines {6430} seven {7651} months. {2320}

6:2 And the Philistines {6430} called {7121} <8799> for the priests {3548} and the diviners, {7080} <8802> saying, {559} <8800> What (4100) shall we do {6213} <8799> to the ark {727} of the LORD? {3068} tell {3045} <8685> us wherewith (4100) we shall send {7971} <8762> it to his place. {4725}

6:3 And they said, {559} <8799> If (518) ye send away {7971} <8764> (853) the ark {727} of the God {430} of Israel, {3478} send {7971} <8762> it not (408) empty; {7387} but (3588) in any wise [7725] <8687> return {7725} <8686> him a trespass offering: {817} then (227) ye shall be healed, {7495} <8735> and it shall be known {3045} <8738> to you why (4100) his hand {3027} is not (3808) removed {5493} <8799> from (4480) you.

6:4 Then said {559} <8799> they, What (4100) [shall be] the trespass offering {817} which (834) we shall return {7725} <8686> to him? They answered, {559} <8799> Five {2568} golden {2091} emerods, {6076} [2914] k8675- and five {2568} golden {2091} mice, {5909} [according to] the number {4557} of the lords {5633} of the Philistines: {6430} for (3588) one {259} plague {4046} [was] on you all, (3605) and on your lords. {5633}

6:5 Wherefore ye shall make {6213} <8804> images {6754} of your emerods, {6076} [2914] k8675- and images {6754} of your mice {5909} that mar {7843} <8688> (853) the land; {776} and ye shall give {5414} <8804> glory {3519} unto the God {430} of Israel: {3478} peradventure (194) he will lighten {7043} <8686> (853) his hand {3027} from off (4480) (5921) you, and from off (4480) (5921) your gods, {430} and from off (4480) (5921) your land. {776}

6:6 Wherefore (4100) then do ye harden {3513} <8762> (853) your hearts, {3824} as (834) the Egyptians {4714} and Pharaoh {6547} hardened {3513} <8765> (853) their hearts? {3820} when (834) he had wrought wonderfully {5953} <8694> among them, did they not (3808) let the people go, {7971} <8762> and they departed? [3212] <8799> (1980)

6:7 Now (6258) therefore make {6213} <8798> a {259} new {2319} cart, {5699} and take {3947} <8798> two {8147} milch {5763} <8802> kine, {6510} on (5921) which (834) there hath come {5927} <8804> no (3808) yoke, {5923} and tie {631} <8804> (853) the kine {6510} to the cart, {5699} and bring {7725} <8689> their calves {1121} home {1004} from (4480) (310) them: [310]

6:8 And take {3947} <8804> (853) the ark {727} of the LORD, {3068} and lay {5414} <8804> it upon (413) the cart; {5699} and put {7760} <8799> the jewels {3627} of gold, {2091} which (834) ye return {7725} <8689> him [for] a trespass offering, {817} in a coffer {712} by the side {6654} (4480) thereof; and send it away, {7971} <8765> (853) that it may go. {1980} <8804>

6:9 And see, {7200} <8804> if (518) it goeth up {5927} <8799> by the way {1870} of his own coast {1366} to Bethshemesh, {1053} [then] he (1931) hath done {6213} <8804> us (853) this (2063) great {1419} evil: {7451} but if (518) not, (3808) then we shall know {3045} <8804> that (3588) [it is] not (3808) his hand {3027} [that] smote {5060} <8804> us: it (1931) [was] a chance {4745} [that] happened (1961) to us. [1961] <8804>

6:10 ¶ And the men [582] (376) did (6213) so; [6213] <8799> (3651) and took {3947} <8799> two {8147} milch {5763} <8802> kine, {6510} and tied {631} <8799> them to the cart, {5699} and shut up {3607} <8804> their calves {1121} at home: {1004}

6:11 And they laid {7760} <8799> (853) the ark {727} of the LORD {3068} upon (413) the cart, {5699} and the coffer {712} with (854) the mice {5909} of gold {2091} and the images {6754} of their emerods. {2914}

6:12 And the kine {6510} took the straight {3474} <8799> way {1870} to (5921) the way {1870} of Bethshemesh, {1053} [and] went along {1980} <8804> the (259) highway, {4546} [259] lowing {1600} <8800> as they went, {1980} <8800> and turned not aside {5493} <8804> (3808) [to] the right hand {3225} or [to] the left; {8040} and the lords {5633} of the Philistines {6430} went {1980} <8802> after {310} them unto (5704) the border {1366} of Bethshemesh. {1053}

6:13 And [they of] Bethshemesh {1053} [were] reaping {7114} <8802> their wheat {2406} harvest {7105} in the valley: {6010} and they lifted up {5375} <8799> (853) their eyes, {5869} and saw {7200} <8799> (853) the ark, {727} and rejoiced {8055} <8799> to see {7200} <8800> [it].

6:14 And the cart {5699} came {935} <8802> into (413) the field {7704} of Joshua, {3091} a Bethshemite, {1030} and stood {5975} <8799> there, (8033) where (8033) [there was] a great {1419} stone: {68} and they clave {1234} <8762> (853) the wood {6086} of the cart, {5699} and offered {5927} <8689> the kine {6510} a burnt offering {5930} unto the LORD. {3068}

6:15 And the Levites {3881} took down {3381} <8689> (853) the ark {727} of the LORD, {3068} and the coffer {712} that (834) [was] with (854) it, wherein (834) the jewels {3627} of gold {2091} [were], and put {7760} <8799> [them] on (413) the great {1419} stone: {68} and the men [582] (376) of Bethshemesh {1053} offered {5927} <8689> burnt offerings {5930} and sacrificed {2076} <8799> sacrifices {2077} the same (1931) day {3117} unto the LORD. {3068}

6:16 And when the five {2568} lords {5633} of the Philistines {6430} had seen {7200} <8804> [it], they returned {7725} <8799> to Ekron {6138} the same (1931) day. {3117}

6:17 And these (428) [are] the golden {2091} emerods {2914} which (834) the Philistines {6430} returned {7725} <8689> [for] a trespass offering {817} unto the LORD; {3068} for Ashdod {795} one, {259} for Gaza {5804} one, {259} for Askelon {831} one, {259} for Gath {1661} one, {259} for Ekron {6138} one; {259}

6:18 And the golden {2091} mice, {5909} [according to] the number {4557} of all (3605) the cities {5892} of the Philistines {6430} [belonging] to the five {2568} lords, {5633} [both] of fenced [4013] cities, {5892} (4480) (4013) and of (5704) country {6521} villages, {3724} even unto (5704) the great {1419} [stone of] Abel, {59} whereon (834) (5921) they set down [3240] <8689> (5117) (853) the ark {727} of the LORD: {3068} [which stone remaineth] unto (5704) this (2088) day {3117} in the field {7704} of Joshua, {3091} the Bethshemite. {1030}

6:19 ¶ And he smote {5221} <8686> the men {376} of Bethshemesh, {1053} because (3588) they had looked {7200} <8804> into the ark {727} of the LORD, {3068} even he smote {5221} <8686> of the people {5971} fifty {2572} thousand {505} and threescore and ten {7657} men: [582] (376) and the people {5971} lamented, {56} <8691> because (3588) the LORD {3068} had smitten {5221} <8689> [many] of the people {5971} with a great {1419} slaughter. {4347}

6:20 And the men [582] (376) of Bethshemesh {1053} said, {559} <8799> Who (4310) is able {3201} <8799> to stand {5975} <8800> before {6440} this (2088) holy {6918} LORD {3068} God? {430} and to (413) whom (4310) shall he go up {5927} <8799> from (4480) (5921) us?

6:21 ¶ And they sent {7971} <8799> messengers {4397} to (413) the inhabitants {3427} <8802> of Kirjathjearim, {7157} saying, {559} <8800> The Philistines {6430} have brought again {7725} <8689> (853) the ark {727} of the LORD; {3068} come ye down, {3381} <8798> [and] fetch it up {5927} <8685> (853) to (413) you.
