1 Samuel

Chapter 9

1  Saul despairing to find his father's asses,  6  by the counsel of his servant,  11  and direction of young maidens,  15  according to God's revelation,  18  cometh to Samuel.  19  Samuel entertaineth Saul at the feast.  25  Samuel, after secret communication, bringeth Saul on his way.

9:1 ¶ Now there was (1961) a man {376} of Benjamin, {1144} (4480) whose name {8034} [was] Kish, {7027} the son {1121} of Abiel, {22} the son {1121} of Zeror, {6872} the son {1121} of Bechorath, {1064} the son {1121} of Aphiah, {647} a Benjamite, {1145} a mighty [1368] man [376] (1368) of power. {2428}

9:2 And he had (1961) a son, {1121} whose name {8034} [was] Saul, {7586} a choice young man, {970} and a goodly: {2896} and [there was] not (369) among the children {1121} (4480) of Israel {3478} a goodlier {2896} person {376} than (4480) he: from his shoulders {7926} (4480) and upward {4605} [he was] higher {1364} than any (4480) (3605) of the people. {5971}

9:3 And the asses {860} of Kish {7027} Saul's {7586} father {1} were lost. {6} <8799> And Kish {7027} said {559} <8799> to (413) Saul {7586} his son, {1121} Take {3947} <8798> now (4994) (853) one {259} of the servants {5288} (4480) with (854) thee, and arise, {6965} <8798> go [3212] <8798> (1980) seek {1245} <8761> (853) the asses. {860}

9:4 And he passed through {5674} <8799> mount {2022} Ephraim, {669} and passed through {5674} <8799> the land {776} of Shalisha, {8031} but they found {4672} <8804> [them] not: (3808) then they passed through {5674} <8799> the land {776} of Shalim, {8171} and [there they were] not: (369) and he passed through {5674} <8799> the land {776} of the Benjamites, {1145} but they found {4672} <8804> [them] not. (3808)

9:5 [And] when they (1992) were come {935} <8804> to the land {776} of Zuph, {6689} Saul {7586} said {559} <8804> to his servant {5288} that (834) [was] with (5973) him, Come, [3212] <8798> (1980) and let us return; {7725} <8799> lest (6435) my father {1} leave {2308} <8799> [caring] for (4480) the asses, {860} and take thought {1672} <8804> for us.

9:6 And he said {559} <8799> unto him, Behold (2009) now, (4994) [there is] in this (2063) city {5892} a man {376} of God, {430} and [he is] an honourable {3513} <8737> man; {376} all (3605) that (834) he saith {1696} <8762> cometh [935] <8799> surely to pass: {935} <8800> now (4994) let us go [3212] <8799> (1980) thither; (8033) peradventure (194) he can shew {5046} <8686> us (853) our way {1870} that (834) (5921) we should go. {1980} <8804>

9:7 Then said {559} <8799> Saul {7586} to his servant, {5288} But, behold, (2009) [if] we go, [3212] <8799> (1980) what (4100) shall we bring {935} <8686> the man? {376} for (3588) the bread {3899} is spent {235} <8804> in our vessels, {3627} (4480) and [there is] not (369) a present {8670} to bring {935} <8687> to the man {376} of God: {430} what (4100) have we?

9:8 And the servant {5288} answered {6030} <8800> (853) Saul {7586} again, {3254} <8686> and said, {559} <8799> Behold, (2009) I have [4672] <8738> here (4672) at hand {3027} the fourth part {7253} of a shekel {8255} of silver: {3701} [that] will I give {5414} <8804> to the man {376} of God, {430} to tell {5046} <8689> us (853) our way. {1870}

9:9 (Beforetime {6440} in Israel, {3478} when a man {376} went [3212] <8800> (1980) to enquire {1875} <8800> of God, {430} thus (3541) he spake, {559} <8804> Come, [3212] <8798> (1980) and let us go [3212] <8799> (1980) to (5704) the seer: {7200} <8802> for (3588) [he that is] now {3117} [called] a Prophet {5030} was beforetime {6440} called {7121} <8735> a Seer.) {7200} <8802>

9:10 Then said [1697] (559) Saul {7586} to his servant, {5288} Well {2896} said; [559] <8799> (1697) come, [3212] <8798> (1980) let us go. [3212] <8799> (1980) So they went [3212] <8799> (1980) unto (413) the city {5892} where (834) (8033) the man {376} of God {430} [was].

9:11 ¶ [And] as they (1992) went up {5927} <8802> the hill {4608} to the city, {5892} they (1992) found {4672} <8804> young maidens {5291} going out {3318} <8802> to draw {7579} <8800> water, {4325} and said {559} <8799> unto them, Is {3426} the seer {7200} <8802> here? (2088)

9:12 And they answered {6030} <8799> them, and said, {559} <8799> He is; {3426} behold, (2009) [he is] before {6440} you: make haste {4116} <8761> now, (6258) for (3588) he came {935} <8804> to day {3117} to the city; {5892} for (3588) [there is] a sacrifice {2077} of the people {5971} to day {3117} in the high place: {1116}

9:13 As soon as ye be come {935} <8800> into the city, {5892} ye shall straightway {3651} find {4672} <8799> him, before (2962) he go up {5927} <8799> to the high place {1116} to eat: {398} <8800> for (3588) the people {5971} will not (3808) eat {398} <8799> until (5704) he come, {935} <8800> because (3588) he (1931) doth bless {1288} <8762> the sacrifice; {2077} [and] afterwards {310} {3651} they eat {398} <8799> that be bidden. {7121} <8803> Now (6258) therefore get you up; {5927} <8798> for (3588) about this time {3117} ye shall find {4672} <8799> him.

9:14 And they went up {5927} <8799> into [8432] the city: {5892} [and] when they (1992) were come {935} <8802> into (8432) the city, {5892} behold, (2009) Samuel {8050} came out {3318} <8802> against {7125} <8800> them, for to go up {5927} <8800> to the high place. {1116}

9:15 ¶ Now the LORD {3068} had told {1540} <8804> Samuel {8050} in (854) his ear {241} a {259} day {3117} before {6440} Saul {7586} came, {935} <8800> saying, {559} <8800>

9:16 To morrow {4279} about this time {6256} I will send {7971} <8799> thee a man {376} out of the land {776} (4480) of Benjamin, {1144} and thou shalt anoint {4886} <8804> him [to be] captain {5057} over (5921) my people {5971} Israel, {3478} that he may save {3467} <8689> (853) my people {5971} out of the hand {3027} (4480) of the Philistines: {6430} for (3588) I have looked [7200] <8804> upon (7200) (853) my people, {5971} because (3588) their cry {6818} is come {935} <8804> unto me. (413)

9:17 And when Samuel {8050} saw {7200} <8804> (853) Saul, {7586} the LORD {3068} said {6030} <8804> unto him, Behold (2009) the man {376} whom (834) I spake {559} <8804> to (413) thee of! this same (2088) shall reign {6113} <8799> over my people. {5971}

9:18 Then Saul {7586} drew near {5066} <8799> to (853) Samuel {8050} in {8432} the gate, {8179} and said, {559} <8799> Tell {5046} <8685> me, I pray thee, (4994) where {335} (2088) the seer's {7200} <8802> house {1004} [is].

9:19 And Samuel {8050} answered {6030} <8799> (853) Saul, {7586} and said, {559} <8799> I (595) [am] the seer: {7200} <8802> go up {5927} <8798> before {6440} me unto the high place; {1116} for ye shall eat {398} <8804> with (5973) me to day, {3117} and to morrow {1242} I will let thee go, {7971} <8765> and will tell {5046} <8686> thee all (3605) that (834) [is] in thine heart. {3824}

9:20 And as for thine asses {860} that were lost {6} <8802> three {7969} days {3117} ago, {3117} set {7760} <8799> not (408) (853) thy mind {3820} on them; for (3588) they are found. {4672} <8738> And on whom (4310) [is] all (3605) the desire {2532} of Israel? {3478} [Is it] not (3808) on thee, and on all (3605) thy father's {1} house? {1004}

9:21 And Saul {7586} answered {6030} <8799> and said, {559} <8799> [Am] not (3808) I (595) a Benjamite, {1145} of the smallest {6996} (4480) of the tribes {7626} of Israel? {3478} and my family {4940} the least {6810} of all (4480) (3605) the families {4940} of the tribe {7626} of Benjamin? {1144} wherefore (4100) then speakest {1696} <8765> thou so {1697} (2088) to (413) me?

9:22 And Samuel {8050} took {3947} <8799> (853) Saul {7586} and his servant, {5288} and brought {935} <8686> them into the parlour, {3957} and made them sit {5414} <8799> in the chiefest {7218} place {4725} among them that were bidden, {7121} <8803> which (1992) [were] about thirty {7970} persons. {376}

9:23 And Samuel {8050} said {559} <8799> unto the cook, {2876} Bring {5414} <8798> (853) the portion {4490} which (834) I gave {5414} <8804> thee, of which (834) I said {559} <8804> unto (413) thee, Set {7760} <8798> it by (5973) thee.

9:24 And the cook {2876} took up {7311} <8686> (853) the shoulder, {7785} and [that] which [was] upon (5921) it, and set {7760} <8799> [it] before {6440} Saul. {7586} And [Samuel] said, {559} <8799> Behold (2009) that which is left! {7604} <8737> set {7760} <8798> [it] before {6440} thee, [and] eat: {398} <8798> for (3588) unto this time {4150} hath it been kept {8104} <8803> for thee since I said, {559} <8800> I have invited {7121} <8804> the people. {5971} So Saul {7586} did eat {398} <8799> with (5973) Samuel {8050} that (1931) day. {3117}

9:25 ¶ And when they were come down {3381} <8799> from the high place {1116} (4480) into the city, {5892} [Samuel] communed {1696} <8762> with (5973) Saul {7586} upon (5921) the top of the house. {1406}

9:26 And they arose early: {7925} <8686> and it came to pass (1961) about the spring {5927} <8800> of the day, {7837} that Samuel {8050} called {7121} <8799> (413) Saul {7586} to the top of the house, {1406} saying, {559} <8800> Up, {6965} <8798> that I may send thee away. {7971} <8762> And Saul {7586} arose, {6965} <8799> and they went out {3318} <8799> both {8147} of them, he (1931) and Samuel, {8050} abroad. {2351}

9:27 [And] as they (1992) were going down {3381} <8802> to the end {7097} of the city, {5892} Samuel {8050} said {559} <8804> to (413) Saul, {7586} Bid {559} <8798> the servant {5288} pass on {5674} <8799> before {6440} us, (and he passed on,) {5674} <8798> but stand [5975] <8798> thou still (5975) (859) a while, {3117} that I may shew {8085} <8686> thee (853) the word {1697} of God. {430}
