Chapter 19

1  David's messengers, sent to comfort Hanun the son of Nahash, are villainously entreated.  6  The Ammonites, strengthened by the Syrians, are overcome by Joab and Abishai.  16  Shophach, making a new supply of the Syrians, is slain by David.

19:1 ¶ Now it came to pass (1961) after (310) this, [310] (3651) that Nahash {5176} the king {4428} of the children {1121} of Ammon {5983} died, {4191} <8799> and his son {1121} reigned {4427} <8799> in his stead. (8478)

19:2 And David {1732} said, {559} <8799> I will shew {6213} <8799> kindness {2617} unto (5973) Hanun {2586} the son {1121} of Nahash, {5176} because (3588) his father {1} shewed {6213} <8804> kindness {2617} to (5973) me. And David {1732} sent {7971} <8799> messengers {4397} to comfort {5162} <8763> him concerning (5921) his father. {1} So the servants {5650} of David {1732} came {935} <8799> into (413) the land {776} of the children {1121} of Ammon {5983} to (413) Hanun, {2586} to comfort {5162} <8763> him.

19:3 But the princes {8269} of the children {1121} of Ammon {5983} said {559} <8799> to Hanun, {2586} Thinkest {5869} thou that David {1732} doth honour {3513} <8764> (853) thy father, {1} that (3588) he hath sent {7971} <8804> comforters {5162} <8764> unto thee? are not (3808) his servants {5650} come {935} <8804> unto (413) thee for (5668) to search, {2713} <8800> and to overthrow, {2015} <8800> and to spy out {7270} <8763> the land? {776}

19:4 Wherefore Hanun {2586} took {3947} <8799> (853) David's {1732} servants, {5650} and shaved {1548} <8762> them, and cut off {3772} <8799> (853) their garments {4063} in the midst {2677} hard by (5704) their buttocks, {4667} and sent them away. {7971} <8762>

19:5 Then there went [3212] <8799> (1980) [certain], and told {5046} <8686> David {1732} how (5921) the men [582] (376) were served. And he sent {7971} <8799> to meet {7125} <8800> them: for (3588) the men [582] (376) were (1961) greatly {3966} ashamed. {3637} <8737> And the king {4428} said, {559} <8799> Tarry {3427} <8798> at Jericho {3405} until (5704) (834) your beards {2206} be grown, {6779} <8762> and [then] return. {7725} <8804>

19:6 ¶ And when the children {1121} of Ammon {5983} saw {7200} <8799> that (3588) they had made themselves odious {887} <8694> to (5973) David, {1732} Hanun {2586} and the children {1121} of Ammon {5983} sent {7971} <8799> a thousand {505} talents {3603} of silver {3701} to hire {7936} <8800> them chariots {7393} and horsemen {6571} out of (4480) Mesopotamia, {763} and out of (4480) Syriamaachah, {758} {4601} and out of Zobah. {6678} (4480)

19:7 So they hired {7936} <8799> thirty {7970} and two {8147} thousand {505} chariots, {7393} and the king {4428} of Maachah {4601} and his people; {5971} who came {935} <8799> and pitched {2583} <8799> before {6440} Medeba. {4311} And the children {1121} of Ammon {5983} gathered themselves together {622} <8738> from their cities, {5892} (4480) and came {935} <8799> to battle. {4421}

19:8 And when David {1732} heard {8085} <8799> [of it], he sent {7971} <8799> (853) Joab, {3097} and all (3605) the host {6635} of the mighty men. {1368}

19:9 And the children {1121} of Ammon {5983} came out, {3318} <8799> and put the battle [4421] in array {6186} <8799> (4421) before the gate {6607} of the city: {5892} and the kings {4428} that (834) were come {935} <8804> [were] by themselves (905) in the field. {7704}

19:10 Now when Joab {3097} saw {7200} <8799> that (3588) the battle {4421} (6440) was set (1961) against (413) him before {6440} and behind, {268} he chose (977) out [977] <8799> of all (4480) (3605) the choice {977} <8803> of Israel, {3478} and put [them] in array {6186} <8799> against {7125} <8800> the Syrians. {758}

19:11 And the rest {3499} of the people {5971} he delivered {5414} <8804> unto the hand {3027} of Abishai {52} his brother, {251} and they set [themselves] in array {6186} <8799> against {7125} <8800> the children {1121} of Ammon. {5983}

19:12 And he said, {559} <8799> If (518) the Syrians {758} be too strong {2388} <8799> for (4480) me, then thou shalt help {8668} (1961) me: but if (518) the children {1121} of Ammon {5983} be too strong {2388} <8799> for (4480) thee, then I will help {3467} <8689> thee.

19:13 Be of good courage, {2388} <8798> and let us behave ourselves valiantly {2388} <8691> for (1157) our people, {5971} and for (1157) the cities {5892} of our God: {430} and let the LORD {3068} do {6213} <8799> [that which is] good {2896} in his sight. {5869}

19:14 So Joab {3097} and the people {5971} that (834) [were] with (5973) him drew nigh {5066} <8799> before {6440} the Syrians {758} unto the battle; {4421} and they fled {5127} <8799> before {6440} (4480) him.

19:15 And when the children {1121} of Ammon {5983} saw {7200} <8804> that (3588) the Syrians {758} were fled, {5127} <8804> they (1992) likewise (1571) fled {5127} <8799> before {6440} (4480) Abishai {52} his brother, {251} and entered {935} <8799> into the city. {5892} Then Joab {3097} came {935} <8799> to Jerusalem. {3389}

19:16 ¶ And when the Syrians {758} saw {7200} <8799> that (3588) they were put to the worse {5062} <8738> before {6440} Israel, {3478} they sent {7971} <8799> messengers, {4397} and drew forth {3318} <8686> (853) the Syrians {758} that (834) [were] beyond {5676} (4480) the river: {5104} and Shophach {7780} the captain {8269} of the host {6635} of Hadarezer {1928} [went] before {6440} them.

19:17 And it was told {5046} <8714> David; {1732} and he gathered {622} <8799> (853) all (3605) Israel, {3478} and passed over {5674} <8799> Jordan, {3383} and came {935} <8799> upon (413) them, and set [the battle] in array {6186} <8799> (4421) against (413) them. So when David {1732} had put the battle [4421] in array {6186} <8799> against {7125} <8800> the Syrians, {758} they fought {3898} <8735> with (5973) him.

19:18 But the Syrians {758} fled {5127} <8799> before {6440} (4480) Israel; {3478} and David {1732} slew {2026} <8799> of the Syrians {758} (4480) seven {7651} thousand {505} [men which fought in] chariots, {7393} and forty {705} thousand {505} footmen, {376} {7273} and killed {4191} <8689> Shophach {7780} the captain {8269} of the host. {6635}

19:19 And when the servants {5650} of Hadarezer {1928} saw {7200} <8799> that (3588) they were put to the worse {5062} <8738> before {6440} Israel, {3478} they made peace {7999} <8686> with (5973) David, {1732} and became his servants: {5647} <8799> neither (3808) would {14} <8804> the Syrians {758} help {3467} <8687> (853) the children {1121} of Ammon {5983} any more.
