Chapter 5

1  The Tribes come to Hebron to anoint David over Israel.  4  David's age.  6  He taking Zion from the Jebusites dwelleth in it.  11  Hiram sendeth to David.  13  Eleven sons are born to him in Jerusalem.  17  David directed by God smiteth the Philistines at Baal-perazim,  22  and again at the mulberry trees.

5:1 ¶ Then came {935} <8799> all (3605) the tribes {7626} of Israel {3478} to (413) David {1732} unto Hebron, {2275} and spake, {559} <8799> saying, {559} <8800> Behold, (2009) we (587) [are] thy bone {6106} and thy flesh. {1320}

5:2 Also (1571) in time past, {865} {8032} when Saul {7586} was (1961) king {4428} over (5921) us, thou (859) wast (1961) he that leddest out {3318} <8688> and broughtest (935) (853) in [935] <8688> Israel: {3478} and the LORD {3068} said {559} <8799> to thee, Thou (859) shalt feed {7462} <8799> (853) my people {5971} (853) Israel, {3478} and thou (859) shalt be (1961) a captain {5057} over (5921) Israel. {3478}

5:3 So all (3605) the elders {2205} of Israel {3478} came {935} <8799> to (413) the king {4428} to Hebron; {2275} and king {4428} David {1732} made {3772} <8799> a league {1285} with them in Hebron {2275} before {6440} the LORD: {3068} and they anointed {4886} <8799> (853) David {1732} king {4428} over (5921) Israel. {3478}

5:4 ¶ David {1732} [was] thirty {7970} years {8141} old {1121} when he began to reign, {4427} <8800> [and] he reigned {4427} <8804> forty {705} years. {8141}

5:5 In Hebron {2275} he reigned {4427} <8804> over (5921) Judah {3063} seven {7651} years {8141} and six {8337} months: {2320} and in Jerusalem {3389} he reigned {4427} <8804> thirty {7970} and three {7969} years {8141} over (5921) all (3605) Israel {3478} and Judah. {3063}

5:6 ¶ And the king {4428} and his men [582] (376) went [3212] <8799> (1980) to Jerusalem {3389} unto (413) the Jebusites, {2983} the inhabitants {3427} <8802> of the land: {776} which spake {559} <8799> unto David, {1732} saying, {559} <8800> Except (3588) (518) thou take away {5493} <8687> the blind {5787} and the lame, {6455} thou shalt not (3808) come in {935} <8799> hither: (2008) thinking, {559} <8800> David {1732} cannot (3808) come in {935} <8799> hither. (2008)

5:7 Nevertheless David {1732} took {3920} <8799> (853) the strong hold {4686} of Zion: {6726} the same (1931) [is] the city {5892} of David. {1732}

5:8 And David {1732} said {559} <8799> on that (1931) day, {3117} Whosoever (3605) getteth up {5060} <8799> to the gutter, {6794} and smiteth {5221} <8688> the Jebusites, {2983} and the lame {6455} and the blind, {5787} [that are] hated {8130} <8803> of David's {1732} soul, {5315} [he shall be chief and captain]. Wherefore (5921) (3651) they said, {559} <8799> The blind {5787} and the lame {6455} shall not (3808) come {935} <8799> into (413) the house. {1004}

5:9 So David {1732} dwelt {3427} <8799> in the fort, {4686} and called {7121} <8799> it the city {5892} of David. {1732} And David {1732} built {1129} <8799> round about {5439} from (4480) Millo {4407} and inward. {1004}

5:10 And David {1732} went [3212] <8799> on, {1980} <8800> and grew great, {1419} and the LORD {3068} God {430} of hosts {6635} [was] with (5973) him.

5:11 ¶ And Hiram {2438} king {4428} of Tyre {6865} sent {7971} <8799> messengers {4397} to (413) David, {1732} and cedar {730} trees, {6086} and carpenters, {2796} (6086) and masons: {7023} [68] (2796) (18) and they built {1129} <8799> David {1732} an house. {1004}

5:12 And David {1732} perceived {3045} <8799> that (3588) the LORD {3068} had established {3559} <8689> him king {4428} over (5921) Israel, {3478} and that (3588) he had exalted {5375} <8765> his kingdom {4467} for his people {5971} Israel's {3478} sake. (5668)

5:13 ¶ And David {1732} took {3947} <8799> [him] more (5750) concubines {6370} and wives {802} out of Jerusalem, {3389} (4480) after {310} he was come {935} <8800> from Hebron: {2275} (4480) and there were yet (5750) sons {1121} and daughters {1323} born {3205} <8735> to David. {1732}

5:14 And these (428) [be] the names {8034} of those that were born {3209} unto him in Jerusalem; {3389} Shammua, {8051} and Shobab, {7727} and Nathan, {5416} and Solomon, {8010}

5:15 Ibhar {2984} also, and Elishua, {474} and Nepheg, {5298} and Japhia, {3309}

5:16 And Elishama, {476} and Eliada, {450} and Eliphalet. {467}

5:17 ¶ But when the Philistines {6430} heard {8085} <8799> that (3588) they had anointed {4886} <8804> (853) David {1732} king {4428} over (5921) Israel, {3478} all (3605) the Philistines {6430} came up {5927} <8799> to seek {1245} <8763> (853) David; {1732} and David {1732} heard {8085} <8799> [of it], and went down {3381} <8799> to (413) the hold. {4686}

5:18 The Philistines {6430} also came {935} <8804> and spread [5203] <8735> themselves (5203) in the valley {6010} of Rephaim. {7497}

5:19 And David {1732} enquired {7592} <8799> of the LORD, {3068} saying, {559} <8800> Shall I go up {5927} <8799> to (413) the Philistines? {6430} wilt thou deliver {5414} <8799> them into mine hand? {3027} And the LORD {3068} said {559} <8799> unto (413) David, {1732} Go up: {5927} <8798> for (3588) I will doubtless [5414] <8800> deliver {5414} <8799> (853) the Philistines {6430} into thine hand. {3027}

5:20 And David {1732} came {935} <8799> to Baalperazim, {1188} and David {1732} smote {5221} <8686> them there, (8033) and said, {559} <8799> The LORD {3068} hath broken forth [6555] <8804> upon (6555) (853) mine enemies {341} <8802> before {6440} me, as the breach {6556} of waters. {4325} Therefore (5921) (3651) he called {7121} <8804> the name {8034} of that (1931) place {4725} Baalperazim. {1188}

5:21 And there (8033) they left {5800} <8799> (853) their images, {6091} and David {1732} and his men [582] (376) burned {5375} <8799> them.

5:22 ¶ And the Philistines {6430} came up {5927} <8800> yet (5750) again, {3254} <8686> and spread [5203] <8735> themselves (5203) in the valley {6010} of Rephaim. {7497}

5:23 And when David {1732} enquired {7592} <8799> of the LORD, {3068} he said, {559} <8799> Thou shalt not (3808) go up; {5927} <8799> [but] fetch a compass {5437} <8685> (413) behind {310} them, and come {935} <8804> upon them over against {4136} (4480) the mulberry trees. {1057}

5:24 And let it be, (1961) when thou hearest {8085} <8800> (853) the sound {6963} of a going {6807} in the tops {7218} of the mulberry trees, {1057} that then (227) thou shalt bestir {2782} <8799> thyself: for (3588) then (227) shall the LORD {3068} go out {3318} <8804> before {6440} thee, to smite {5221} <8687> the host {4264} of the Philistines. {6430}

5:25 And David {1732} did (6213) so, [6213] <8799> (3651) as (834) the LORD {3068} had commanded {6680} <8765> him; and smote {5221} <8686> (853) the Philistines {6430} from Geba {1387} (4480) until thou come {935} <8800> to Gazer. {1507}
