Deuteronomy

Chapter 17

1  The things sacrificed must be sound.  2  Idolaters must be slain.  8  Hard controversies are to be determined by the priests and judges.  12  The contemner of that determination must die.  14  The election,  16  and duty of a king.

17:1 ¶ Thou shalt not (3808) sacrifice {2076} <8799> unto the LORD {3068} thy God {430} [any] bullock, {7794} or sheep, {7716} wherein (834) is (1961) blemish, {3971} [or] any (3605) evilfavouredness: {7451} {1697} for (3588) that (1931) [is] an abomination {8441} unto the LORD {3068} thy God. {430}

17:2 ¶ If (3588) there be found {4672} <8735> among {7130} you, within any {259} of thy gates {8179} which (834) the LORD {3068} thy God {430} giveth {5414} <8802> thee, man {376} or (176) woman, {802} that (834) hath wrought {6213} <8799> (853) wickedness {7451} in the sight {5869} of the LORD {3068} thy God, {430} in transgressing {5674} <8800> his covenant, {1285}

17:3 And hath gone [3212] <8799> (1980) and served {5647} <8799> other {312} gods, {430} and worshipped {7812} <8691> them, either the sun, {8121} or (176) moon, {3394} or (176) any (3605) of the host {6635} of heaven, {8064} which (834) I have not (3808) commanded; {6680} <8765>

17:4 And it be told {5046} <8717> thee, and thou hast heard {8085} <8804> [of it], and enquired {1875} <8804> diligently, {3190} <8687> and, behold, (2009) [it be] true, {571} [and] the thing {1697} certain, {3559} <8737> [that] such (2063) abomination {8441} is wrought {6213} <8738> in Israel: {3478}

17:5 Then shalt thou bring forth {3318} <8689> (853) that (1931) man {376} or (176) that (1931) woman, {802} which (834) have committed {6213} <8804> (853) that (2088) wicked {7451} thing, {1697} unto (413) thy gates, {8179} [even] (853) that man {376} or (176) (853) that woman, {802} and shalt stone {5619} <8804> them with stones, {68} till they die. {4191} <8804>

17:6 At (5921) the mouth {6310} of two {8147} witnesses, {5707} or (176) three {7969} witnesses, {5707} shall he that is worthy of death {4191} <8714> be put to death; {4191} <8801> [but] at (5921) the mouth {6310} of one {259} witness {5707} he shall not (3808) be put to death. {4191} <8714>

17:7 The hands {3027} of the witnesses {5707} shall be (1961) first {7223} upon him to put him to death, {4191} <8687> and afterward {314} the hands {3027} of all (3605) the people. {5971} So thou shalt put [1197] <0> the evil [7451] away {1197} <8765> (7451) from among {7130} (4480) you.

17:8 ¶ If (3588) there arise a matter [1697] too hard {6381} <8735> (1697) for (4480) thee in judgment, {4941} between (996) blood {1818} and blood, {1818} between (996) plea {1779} and plea, {1779} and between (996) stroke {5061} and stroke, {5061} [being] matters {1697} of controversy {7379} within thy gates: {8179} then shalt thou arise, {6965} <8804> and get thee up {5927} <8804> into (413) the place {4725} which (834) the LORD {3068} thy God {430} shall choose; {977} <8799>

17:9 And thou shalt come {935} <8804> unto (413) the priests {3548} the Levites, {3881} and unto (413) the judge {8199} <8802> that (834) shall be (1961) in those (1992) days, {3117} and enquire; {1875} <8804> and they shall shew {5046} <8689> thee (853) the sentence {1697} of judgment: {4941}

17:10 And thou shalt do {6213} <8804> according to (5921) (6310) the sentence, {1697} [6310] which (834) they of (4480) that (1931) place {4725} which (834) the LORD {3068} shall choose {977} <8799> shall shew {5046} <8686> thee; and thou shalt observe {8104} <8804> to do {6213} <8800> according to all (3605) that (834) they inform {3384} <8686> thee:

17:11 According to (5921) the sentence {6310} of the law {8451} which (834) they shall teach {3384} <8686> thee, and according to (5921) the judgment {4941} which (834) they shall tell {559} <8799> thee, thou shalt do: {6213} <8799> thou shalt not (3808) decline {5493} <8799> from (4480) the sentence {1697} which (834) they shall shew {5046} <8686> thee, [to] the right hand, {3225} nor [to] the left. {8040}

17:12 And the man {376} that (834) will do {6213} <8799> presumptuously, {2087} and will not (1115) hearken {8085} <8800> unto (413) the priest {3548} that standeth {5975} <8802> to minister {8334} <8763> there (8033) before (854) the LORD {3068} thy God, {430} or (176) unto (413) the judge, {8199} <8802> even that (1931) man {376} shall die: {4191} <8804> and thou shalt put away {1197} <8765> the evil {7451} from Israel. {3478} (4480)

17:13 And all (3605) the people {5971} shall hear, {8085} <8799> and fear, {3372} <8799> and do no (3808) more (5750) presumptuously. {2102} <8686>

17:14 ¶ When (3588) thou art come {935} <8799> unto (413) the land {776} which (834) the LORD {3068} thy God {430} giveth {5414} <8802> thee, and shalt possess {3423} <8804> it, and shalt dwell {3427} <8804> therein, and shalt say, {559} <8804> I will set {7760} <8799> a king {4428} over (5921) me, like as all (3605) the nations {1471} that (834) [are] about {5439} me;

17:15 Thou shalt in any wise [7760] <8800> set {7760} <8799> [him] king {4428} over (5921) thee, whom (834) the LORD {3068} thy God {430} shall choose: {977} <8799> [one] from among {7130} (4480) thy brethren {251} shalt thou set {7760} <8799> king {4428} over (5921) thee: thou mayest {3201} <8799> not (3808) set {5414} <8800> a stranger {5237} {376} over (5921) thee, which (834) [is] not (3808) thy brother. {251}

17:16 But (7535) he shall not (3808) multiply {7235} <8686> horses {5483} to himself, nor (3808) cause (853) the people {5971} to return {7725} <8686> to Egypt, {4714} to the end that (4616) he should multiply {7235} <8687> horses: {5483} forasmuch as the LORD {3068} hath said {559} <8804> unto you, Ye shall henceforth {3254} <8686> return {7725} <8800> no (3808) more (5750) that (2088) way. {1870}

17:17 Neither (3808) shall he multiply {7235} <8686> wives {802} to himself, that his heart {3824} turn [5493] <8799> not away: (5493) (3808) neither (3808) shall he greatly {3966} multiply {7235} <8686> to himself silver {3701} and gold. {2091}

17:18 And it shall be, (1961) when he sitteth {3427} <8800> upon (5921) the throne {3678} of his kingdom, {4467} that he shall write {3789} <8804> him (853) a copy {4932} of this (2063) law {8451} in (5921) a book {5612} out of [that which is] before {6440} (4480) the priests {3548} the Levites: {3881}

17:19 And it shall be (1961) with (5973) him, and he shall read {7121} <8804> therein all (3605) the days {3117} of his life: {2416} that (4616) he may learn {3925} <8799> to fear {3372} <8800> (853) the LORD {3068} his God, {430} to keep {8104} <8800> (853) all (3605) the words {1697} of this (2063) law {8451} and these (428) statutes, {2706} to do {6213} <8800> them:

17:20 That his heart {3824} be not (1115) lifted up {7311} <8800> above his brethren, {251} (4480) and that he turn not aside {5493} <8800> (1115) from (4480) the commandment, {4687} [to] the right hand, {3225} or [to] the left: {8040} to the end that (4616) he may prolong {748} <8686> [his] days {3117} in (5921) his kingdom, {4467} he, (1931) and his children, {1121} in the midst {7130} of Israel. {3478}
