Chapter 4

1  An exhortation to obedience.  41  Moses appointeth three cities of refuge on that side Jordan.

4:1 ¶ Now (6258) therefore hearken, {8085} <8798> O Israel, {3478} unto (413) the statutes {2706} and unto (413) the judgments, {4941} which (834) I (595) teach {3925} <8764> you, for to do {6213} <8800> [them], that (4616) ye may live, {2421} <8799> and go in {935} <8804> and possess {3423} <8804> (853) the land {776} which (834) the LORD {3068} God {430} of your fathers {1} giveth {5414} <8802> you.

4:2 Ye shall not (3808) add {3254} <8686> unto (5921) the word {1697} which (834) I (595) command {6680} <8764> you, neither (3808) shall ye diminish {1639} <8799> [ought] from (4480) it, that ye may keep {8104} <8800> (853) the commandments {4687} of the LORD {3068} your God {430} which (834) I (595) command {6680} <8764> you.

4:3 Your eyes {5869} have seen {7200} <8802> (853) what (834) the LORD {3068} did {6213} <8804> because of Baalpeor: {1187} for (3588) all (3605) the men {376} that (834) followed {310} {1980} <8804> Baalpeor, {1187} the LORD {3068} thy God {430} hath destroyed {8045} <8689> them from among {7130} (4480) you.

4:4 But ye (859) that did cleave {1695} unto the LORD {3068} your God {430} [are] alive {2416} every one (3605) of you this day. {3117}

4:5 Behold, {7200} <8798> I have taught {3925} <8765> you statutes {2706} and judgments, {4941} even as {834} the LORD {3068} my God {430} commanded {6680} <8765> me, that ye should do {6213} <8800> so (3651) in {7130} the land {776} whither (834) (8033) ye (859) go {935} <8802> to possess {3423} <8800> it.

4:6 Keep {8104} <8804> therefore and do {6213} <8804> [them]; for (3588) this (1931) [is] your wisdom {2451} and your understanding {998} in the sight {5869} of the nations, {5971} which (834) shall hear {8085} <8799> (853) all (3605) these (428) statutes, {2706} and say, {559} <8804> Surely (7535) this (2088) great {1419} nation {1471} [is] a wise {2450} and understanding {995} <8737> people. {5971}

4:7 For (3588) what (4310) nation {1471} [is there so] great, {1419} who (834) [hath] God {430} [so] nigh {7138} unto (413) them, as the LORD {3068} our God {430} [is] in all (3605) [things that] we call {7121} <8800> upon (413) him [for]?

4:8 And what (4310) nation {1471} [is there so] great, {1419} that (834) hath statutes {2706} and judgments {4941} [so] righteous {6662} as all (3605) this (2063) law, {8451} which (834) I (595) set {5414} <8802> before {6440} you this day? {3117}

4:9 Only (7535) take heed {8104} <8734> to thyself, and keep {8104} <8798> thy soul {5315} diligently, {3966} lest (6435) thou forget {7911} <8799> (853) the things {1697} which (834) thine eyes {5869} have seen, {7200} <8804> and lest (6435) they depart {5493} <8799> from thy heart {3824} (4480) all (3605) the days {3117} of thy life: {2416} but teach {3045} <8689> them thy sons, {1121} and thy sons' {1121} sons; {1121}

4:10 [Specially] the day {3117} that (834) thou stoodest {5975} <8804> before {6440} the LORD {3068} thy God {430} in Horeb, {2722} when the LORD {3068} said {559} <8800> unto (413) me, Gather [6950] <0> me the people [5971] together, {6950} <8685> (853) (5971) and I will make them hear {8085} <8686> (853) my words, {1697} that (834) they may learn {3925} <8799> to fear {3372} <8800> me all (3605) the days {3117} that (834) they (1992) shall live {2416} upon (5921) the earth, {127} and [that] they may teach {3925} <8762> their children. {1121}

4:11 And ye came near {7126} <8799> and stood {5975} <8799> under (8478) the mountain; {2022} and the mountain {2022} burned {1197} <8802> with fire {784} unto (5704) the midst {3820} of heaven, {8064} with darkness, {6205} clouds, {6051} and thick darkness. [2822] (6205)

4:12 And the LORD {3068} spake {1696} <8762> unto (413) you out of the midst {8432} (4480) of the fire: {784} ye (859) heard {8085} <8802> the voice {6963} of the words, {1697} but saw {7200} <8802> no (369) similitude; {8544} only {2108} [ye heard] a voice. {6963}

4:13 And he declared {5046} <8686> unto you (853) his covenant, {1285} which (834) he commanded {6680} <8765> you to perform, {6213} <8800> [even] ten {6235} commandments; {1697} and he wrote {3789} <8799> them upon (5921) two {8147} tables {3871} of stone. {68}

4:14 ¶ And the LORD {3068} commanded {6680} <8765> me at that (1931) time {6256} to teach {3925} <8763> you statutes {2706} and judgments, {4941} that ye might do {6213} <8800> them in the land {776} whither (834) (8033) ye (859) go over {5674} <8802> to possess {3423} <8800> it.

4:15 Take ye therefore good [3966] heed {8104} <8738> (3966) unto yourselves; {5315} for (3588) ye saw {7200} <8804> no (3808) manner (3605) of similitude {8544} on the day {3117} [that] the LORD {3068} spake {1696} <8763> unto (413) you in Horeb {2722} out of the midst {8432} (4480) of the fire: {784}

4:16 Lest (6435) ye corrupt {7843} <8686> [yourselves], and make {6213} <8804> you a graven image, {6459} the similitude {8544} of any (3605) figure, {5566} the likeness {8403} of male {2145} or (176) female, {5347}

4:17 The likeness {8403} of any (3605) beast {929} that (834) [is] on the earth, {776} the likeness {8403} of any (3605) winged {3671} fowl {6833} that (834) flieth {5774} <8799> in the air, {8064}

4:18 The likeness {8403} of any thing (3605) that creepeth {7430} <8802> on the ground, {127} the likeness {8403} of any (3605) fish {1710} that (834) [is] in the waters {4325} beneath {8478} (4480) the earth: {776}

4:19 And lest (6435) thou lift up {5375} <8799> thine eyes {5869} unto heaven, {8064} and when thou seest {7200} <8804> (853) the sun, {8121} and the moon, {3394} and the stars, {3556} [even] all (3605) the host {6635} of heaven, {8064} shouldest be driven {5080} <8738> to worship {7812} <8694> them, and serve {5647} <8804> them, which (834) the LORD {3068} thy God {430} hath divided {2505} <8804> (853) unto all (3605) nations {5971} under (8478) the whole (3605) heaven. {8064}

4:20 But the LORD {3068} hath taken {3947} <8804> you, and brought you forth {3318} <8686> (853) out of the iron {1270} furnace, {3564} (4480) [even] out of Egypt, {4714} (4480) to be (1961) unto him a people {5971} of inheritance, {5159} as [ye are] this (2088) day. {3117}

4:21 Furthermore the LORD {3068} was angry {599} <8694> with me for your sakes, {1697} (5921) and sware {7650} <8735> that I should not (1115) go over {5674} <8800> (853) Jordan, {3383} and that I should not (1115) go [935] <8800> in (935) unto (413) that good {2896} land, {776} which (834) the LORD {3068} thy God {430} giveth {5414} <8802> thee [for] an inheritance: {5159}

4:22 But (3588) I (595) must die {4191} <8801> in this (2063) land, {776} I must not (369) go over {5674} <8802> (853) Jordan: {3383} but ye (859) shall go over, {5674} <8802> and possess {3423} <8804> (853) that (2063) good {2896} land. {776}

4:23 Take heed {8104} <8734> unto yourselves, lest (6435) ye forget {7911} <8799> (853) the covenant {1285} of the LORD {3068} your God, {430} which (834) he made {3772} <8804> with (5973) you, and make {6213} <8804> you a graven image, {6459} [or] the likeness {8544} of any {3605} [thing], which (834) the LORD {3068} thy God {430} hath forbidden {6680} <8765> thee.

4:24 For (3588) the LORD {3068} thy God {430} [is] a consuming {398} <8802> fire, {784} [even] a jealous {7067} God. {410}

4:25 ¶ When (3588) thou shalt beget {3205} <8686> children, {1121} and children's {1121} children, {1121} and ye shall have remained long {3462} <8738> in the land, {776} and shall corrupt {7843} <8689> [yourselves], and make {6213} <8804> a graven image, {6459} [or] the likeness {8544} of any (3605) [thing], and shall do {6213} <8804> evil {7451} in the sight {5869} of the LORD {3068} thy God, {430} to provoke him to anger: {3707} <8687>

4:26 I call {5749} <0> (853) heaven {8064} and earth {776} to witness {5749} <8689> against you this day, {3117} that (3588) ye shall soon {4118} utterly [6] <8800> perish {6} <8799> from off (4480) (5921) the land {776} whereunto (834) (8033) ye (859) go over {5674} <8802> (853) Jordan {3383} to possess {3423} <8800> it; ye shall not (3808) prolong {748} <8686> [your] days {3117} upon (5921) it, but (3588) shall utterly [8045] <8736> be destroyed. {8045} <8735>

4:27 And the LORD {3068} shall scatter {6327} <8689> you among the nations, {5971} and ye shall be left {7604} <8738> few {4962} in number {4557} among the heathen, {1471} whither (834) (8033) the LORD {3068} shall lead {5090} <8762> you.

4:28 And there (8033) ye shall serve {5647} <8804> gods, {430} the work {4639} of men's {120} hands, {3027} wood {6086} and stone, {68} which (834) neither (3808) see, {7200} <8799> nor (3808) hear, {8085} <8799> nor (3808) eat, {398} <8799> nor (3808) smell. {7306} <8686>

4:29 But if from thence (4480) (8033) thou shalt seek {1245} <8765> (853) the LORD {3068} thy God, {430} thou shalt find {4672} <8804> [him], if (3588) thou seek {1875} <8799> him with all (3605) thy heart {3824} and with all (3605) thy soul. {5315}

4:30 When thou art in tribulation, {6862} and all (3605) these (428) things {1697} are come {4672} <8804> upon thee, [even] in the latter {319} days, {3117} if thou turn {7725} <8804> to (5704) the LORD {3068} thy God, {430} and shalt be obedient {8085} <8804> unto his voice; {6963}

4:31 (For (3588) the LORD {3068} thy God {430} [is] a merciful {7349} God;) {410} he will not (3808) forsake {7503} <8686> thee, neither (3808) destroy {7843} <8686> thee, nor (3808) forget {7911} <8799> (853) the covenant {1285} of thy fathers {1} which (834) he sware {7650} <8738> unto them.

4:32 For (3588) ask {7592} <8798> now (4994) of the days {3117} that are past, {7223} which (834) were {1961} <8738> before {6440} thee, since (4480) the day {3117} that (834) God {430} created {1254} <8804> man {120} upon (5921) the earth, {776} and [ask] from the one side {7097} (4480) of heaven {8064} unto (5704) the other, (7097) (8064) whether there hath been (1961) [any such thing] as this (2088) great {1419} thing {1697} [is], or (176) hath been heard {8085} <8738> like it? (3644)

4:33 Did [ever] people {5971} hear {8085} <8804> the voice {6963} of God {430} speaking (1696) out [1696] <8764> of the midst {8432} (4480) of the fire, {784} as (834) thou (859) hast heard, {8085} <8804> and live? {2421} <8799>

4:34 Or (176) hath God {430} assayed {5254} <8765> to go {935} <8800> [and] take {3947} <8800> him a nation {1471} from the midst {7130} (4480) of [another] nation, {1471} by temptations, {4531} by signs, {226} and by wonders, {4159} and by war, {4421} and by a mighty {2389} hand, {3027} and by a stretched out {5186} <8803> arm, {2220} and by great {1419} terrors, {4172} according to all (3605) that (834) the LORD {3068} your God {430} did {6213} <8804> for you in Egypt {4714} before your eyes? {5869}

4:35 Unto thee (859) it was shewed, {7200} <8717> that thou mightest know {3045} <8800> that (3588) the LORD {3068} he (1931) [is] God; {430} [there is] none (369) else {5750} beside (4480) (905) him. [905]

4:36 Out of (4480) heaven {8064} he made thee to hear {8085} <8689> (853) his voice, {6963} that he might instruct {3256} <8763> thee: and upon (5921) earth {776} he shewed {7200} <8689> thee (853) his great {1419} fire; {784} and thou heardest {8085} <8804> his words {1697} out of the midst {8432} (4480) of the fire. {784}

4:37 And because (8478) (3588) he loved {157} <8804> (853) thy fathers, {1} therefore he chose {977} <8799> their seed {2233} after {310} them, and brought thee out {3318} <8686> in his sight {6440} with his mighty {1419} power {3581} out of Egypt; {4714} (4480)

4:38 To drive out {3423} <8687> nations {1471} from before {6440} (4480) thee greater {1419} and mightier {6099} than (4480) thou [art], to bring [935] <8687> thee in, (935) to give {5414} <8800> thee (853) their land {776} [for] an inheritance, {5159} as [it is] this (2088) day. {3117}

4:39 Know {3045} <8804> therefore this day, {3117} and consider {7725} <8689> [it] in (413) thine heart, {3824} that (3588) the LORD {3068} he (1931) [is] God {430} in heaven {8064} above, {4605} (4480) and upon (5921) the earth {776} beneath: (4480) (8478) [there is] none (369) else. (5750)

4:40 Thou shalt keep {8104} <8804> therefore (853) his statutes, {2706} and his commandments, {4687} which (834) I (595) command {6680} <8764> thee this day, {3117} that (834) it may go well {3190} <8799> with thee, and with thy children {1121} after {310} thee, and that (4616) thou mayest prolong {748} <8686> [thy] days {3117} upon (5921) the earth, {127} which (834) the LORD {3068} thy God {430} giveth {5414} <8802> thee, for ever. (3605) (3117)

4:41 ¶ Then (227) Moses {4872} severed {914} <8686> three {7969} cities {5892} on this side {5676} Jordan {3383} toward the sunrising; {8121} {4217}

4:42 That the slayer {7523} <8802> might flee {5127} <8800> thither, (8033) which (834) should kill {7523} <8799> (853) his neighbour {7453} unawares, {1097} {1847} and hated {8130} <8802> him not (3808) in times [8543] past; {8032} (4480) (8543) and that fleeing {5127} <8804> unto (413) one {259} of (4480) these {411} cities {5892} he might live: {2425} <8804>

4:43 [Namely], (853) Bezer {1221} in the wilderness, {4057} in the plain {4334} country, {776} of the Reubenites; {7206} and Ramoth {7216} in Gilead, {1568} of the Gadites; {1425} and Golan {1474} in Bashan, {1316} of the Manassites. {4520}

4:44 ¶ And this (2063) [is] the law {8451} which (834) Moses {4872} set {7760} <8804> before {6440} the children {1121} of Israel: {3478}

4:45 These (428) [are] the testimonies, {5713} and the statutes, {2706} and the judgments, {4941} which (834) Moses {4872} spake {1696} <8765> unto (413) the children {1121} of Israel, {3478} after they came forth {3318} <8800> out of Egypt, {4714} (4480)

4:46 On this side {5676} Jordan, {3383} in the valley {1516} over against {4136} Bethpeor, {1047} in the land {776} of Sihon {5511} king {4428} of the Amorites, {567} who (834) dwelt {3427} <8802> at Heshbon, {2809} whom (834) Moses {4872} and the children {1121} of Israel {3478} smote, {5221} <8689> after they were come forth {3318} <8800> out of Egypt: {4714} (4480)

4:47 And they possessed {3423} <8799> (853) his land, {776} and the land {776} of Og {5747} king {4428} of Bashan, {1316} two {8147} kings {4428} of the Amorites, {567} which (834) [were] on this side {5676} Jordan {3383} toward the sunrising; {4217} {8121}

4:48 From Aroer, {6177} (4480) which (834) [is] by (5921) the bank {8193} of the river {5158} Arnon, {769} even unto (5704) mount {2022} Sion, {7865} which (1931) [is] Hermon, {2768}

4:49 And all (3605) the plain {6160} on this side {5676} Jordan {3383} eastward, {4217} even unto (5704) the sea {3220} of the plain, {6160} under (8478) the springs {794} of Pisgah. {6449}
