Chapter 21

1  The expiation of an uncertain murder.  10  The usage of a captive taken to wife.  15  The firstborn is not to be disinherited upon private affection.  18  A stubborn son is to be stoned to death.  22  The malefactor must not hang all night of a tree.

21:1 ¶ If (3588) [one] be found {4672} <8735> slain {2491} in the land {127} which (834) the LORD {3068} thy God {430} giveth {5414} <8802> thee to possess {3423} <8800> it, lying {5307} <8802> in the field, {7704} [and] it be not (3808) known {3045} <8738> who (4310) hath slain {5221} <8689> him:

21:2 Then thy elders {2205} and thy judges {8199} <8802> shall come forth, {3318} <8804> and they shall measure {4058} <8804> unto (413) the cities {5892} which (834) [are] round about {5439} him that is slain: {2491}

21:3 And it shall be, (1961) [that] the city {5892} [which is] next {7138} unto (413) the slain man, {2491} even the elders {2205} of that (1931) city {5892} shall take {3947} <8804> an heifer, {1241} {5697} which (834) hath not (3808) been wrought (5647) with, [5647] <8795> [and] which (834) hath not (3808) drawn {4900} <8804> in the yoke; {5923}

21:4 And the elders {2205} of that (1931) city {5892} shall bring down {3381} <8689> (853) the heifer {5697} unto (413) a rough {386} valley, {5158} which (834) is neither (3808) eared {5647} <8735> nor (3808) sown, {2232} <8735> and shall strike off <0> [6202] (6203) (853) the heifer's {5697} neck [6202] <8804> (6203) there (8033) in the valley: {5158}

21:5 And the priests {3548} the sons {1121} of Levi {3878} shall come near; {5066} <8738> for (3588) them the LORD {3068} thy God {430} hath chosen {977} <8804> to minister {8334} <8763> unto him, and to bless {1288} <8763> in the name {8034} of the LORD; {3068} and by (5921) their word {6310} shall every (3605) controversy {7379} and every (3605) stroke {5061} be (1961) [tried]:

21:6 And all (3605) the elders {2205} of that (1931) city, {5892} [that are] next {7138} unto (413) the slain {2491} [man], shall wash {7364} <8799> (853) their hands {3027} over (5921) the heifer {5697} that is beheaded {6202} <8803> in the valley: {5158}

21:7 And they shall answer {6030} <8804> and say, {559} <8804> Our hands {3027} have not (3808) shed {8210} <8804> (853) this (2088) blood, {1818} neither (3808) have our eyes {5869} seen {7200} <8804> [it].

21:8 Be merciful, {3722} <8761> O LORD, {3068} unto thy people {5971} Israel, {3478} whom (834) thou hast redeemed, {6299} <8804> and lay {5414} <8799> not (408) innocent {5355} blood {1818} unto thy people {5971} of Israel's {3478} charge. {7130} And the blood {1818} shall be forgiven {3722} <8694> them.

21:9 So shalt thou (859) put away {1197} <8762> the [guilt of] innocent {5355} blood {1818} from among {7130} (4480) you, when (3588) thou shalt do {6213} <8799> [that which is] right {3477} in the sight {5869} of the LORD. {3068}

21:10 ¶ When (3588) thou goest forth {3318} <8799> to war {4421} against (5921) thine enemies, {341} <8802> and the LORD {3068} thy God {430} hath delivered {5414} <8804> them into thine hands, {3027} and thou hast taken {7617} <8804> them captive, {7628}

21:11 And seest {7200} <8804> among the captives {7633} a beautiful {8389} [3303] (3033) woman, {802} and hast a desire {2836} <8804> unto her, that thou wouldest have (3947) her [3947] <8804> to thy wife; {802}

21:12 Then thou shalt bring {935} <8689> her home {8432} to thine house; {1004} and she shall shave {1548} <8765> (853) her head, {7218} and pare {6213} <8804> (853) her nails; {6856}

21:13 And she shall put {5493} <8689> (853) the raiment {8071} of her captivity {7628} from off (4480) (5921) her, and shall remain {3427} <8804> in thine house, {1004} and bewail {1058} <8804> (853) her father {1} and her mother {517} a full {3117} month: {3391} and after {310} that (3651) thou shalt go [935] <8799> in (935) unto (413) her, and be her husband, [1166] <8804> (1167) and she shall be (1961) thy wife. {802}

21:14 And it shall be, (1961) if (518) thou have no delight {2654} <8804> (3808) in her, then thou shalt let her go {7971} <8765> whither she will; {5315} but thou shalt not (3808) sell [4376] <8799> her at all {4376} <8800> for money, {3701} thou shalt not (3808) make merchandise {6014} <8691> of her, because {834} (8478) thou hast humbled {6031} <8765> her.

21:15 ¶ If (3588) a man {376} have (1961) two {8147} wives, {802} one {259} beloved, {157} <8803> and another {259} hated, {8130} <8803> and they have born {3205} <8804> him children, {1121} [both] the beloved {157} <8803> and the hated; {8130} <8803> and [if] the firstborn {1060} son {1121} be (1961) hers that was hated: {8146}

21:16 Then it shall be, (1961) when {3117} he maketh (853) his sons {1121} to inherit {5157} <8687> (853) [that] which (834) he hath, (1961) [that] he may {3201} <8799> not (3808) make (1069) (853) the son {1121} of the beloved {157} <8803> firstborn {1069} <8763> before {6440} (5921) the son {1121} of the hated, {8130} <8803> [which is indeed] the firstborn: {1060}

21:17 But (3588) he shall acknowledge {5234} <8686> the son {1121} of the hated {8130} <8803> (853) [for] the firstborn, {1060} by giving {5414} <8800> him a double {8147} portion {6310} of all (3605) that (834) he hath: {4672} <8735> for (3588) he (1931) [is] the beginning {7225} of his strength; {202} the right {4941} of the firstborn {1062} [is] his.

21:18 ¶ If (3588) a man {376} have (1961) a stubborn {5637} <8802> and rebellious {4784} <8802> son, {1121} which will not (369) obey {8085} <8802> the voice {6963} of his father, {1} or the voice {6963} of his mother, {517} and [that], when they have chastened {3256} <8765> him, will not (3808) hearken {8085} <8799> unto (413) them:

21:19 Then shall his father {1} and his mother {517} lay hold {8610} <8804> on him, and bring him out {3318} <8689> (853) unto (413) the elders {2205} of his city, {5892} and unto (413) the gate {8179} of his place; {4725}

21:20 And they shall say {559} <8804> unto (413) the elders {2205} of his city, {5892} This (2088) our son {1121} [is] stubborn {5637} <8802> and rebellious, {4784} <8802> he will not (369) obey {8085} <8802> our voice; {6963} [he is] a glutton, {2151} <8802> and a drunkard. {5433} <8802>

21:21 And all (3605) the men [582] (376) of his city {5892} shall stone {7275} <8804> him with stones, {68} that he die: {4191} <8804> so shalt thou put [1197] <0> evil [7451] away {1197} <8765> (7451) from among {7130} (4480) you; and all (3605) Israel {3478} shall hear, {8085} <8799> and fear. {3372} <8799>

21:22 ¶ And if (3588) a man {376} have committed (1961) a sin {2399} worthy (4941) of [4941] death, {4194} and he be to be put to death, {4191} <8717> and thou hang {8518} <8804> him on (5921) a tree: {6086}

21:23 His body {5038} shall not (3808) remain all night {3885} <8799> upon (5921) the tree, {6086} but (3588) thou shalt in any wise [6912] <8800> bury {6912} <8799> him that (1931) day; {3117} (for (3588) he that is hanged {8518} <8803> [is] accursed {7045} of God;) {430} that (853) thy land {127} be not (3808) defiled, {2930} <8762> which (834) the LORD {3068} thy God {430} giveth {5414} <8802> thee [for] an inheritance. {5159}
