Chapter 9

Moses dissuadeth them from the opinion of their own righteousness, by rehearsing their several rebellions.

9:1 ¶ Hear, {8085} <8798> O Israel: {3478} Thou (859) [art] to pass over {5674} <8802> (853) Jordan {3383} this day, {3117} to go in {935} <8800> to possess {3423} <8800> nations {1471} greater {1419} and mightier {6099} than (4480) thyself, cities {5892} great {1419} and fenced up {1219} <8803> to heaven, {8064}

9:2 A people {5971} great {1419} and tall, {7311} <8802> the children {1121} of the Anakims, {6062} whom (834) thou (859) knowest, {3045} <8804> and [of whom] thou (859) hast heard {8085} <8804> [say], Who (4310) can stand {3320} <8691> before {6440} the children {1121} of Anak! {6061}

9:3 Understand {3045} <8804> therefore this day, {3117} that (3588) the LORD {3068} thy God {430} [is] he (1931) which goeth over {5674} <8802> before {6440} thee; [as] a consuming {398} <8802> fire {784} he (1931) shall destroy {8045} <8686> them, and he (1931) shall bring them down {3665} <8686> before thy face: {6440} so shalt thou drive them out, {3423} <8689> and destroy {6} <8689> them quickly, {4118} as (834) the LORD {3068} hath said {1696} <8765> unto thee.

9:4 Speak {559} <8799> not (408) thou in thine heart, {3824} after that the LORD {3068} thy God {430} hath cast them out {1920} <8800> (853) from before {6440} (4480) thee, saying, {559} <8800> For my righteousness {6666} the LORD {3068} hath brought me in {935} <8689> to possess {3423} <8800> (853) this (2063) land: {776} but for the wickedness {7564} of these (428) nations {1471} the LORD {3068} doth drive them out {3423} <8688> from before {6440} (4480) thee.

9:5 Not (3808) for thy righteousness, {6666} or for the uprightness {3476} of thine heart, {3824} dost thou (859) go {935} <8802> to possess {3423} <8800> (853) their land: {776} but (3588) for the wickedness {7564} of these (428) nations {1471} the LORD {3068} thy God {430} doth drive them out {3423} <8688> from before {6440} (4480) thee, and that (4616) he may perform {6965} <8687> (853) the word {1697} which (834) the LORD {3068} sware {7650} <8738> unto thy fathers, {1} Abraham, {85} Isaac, {3327} and Jacob. {3290}

9:6 Understand {3045} <8804> therefore, that (3588) the LORD {3068} thy God {430} giveth {5414} <8802> thee not (3808) (853) this (2063) good {2896} land {776} to possess {3423} <8800> it for thy righteousness; {6666} for (3588) thou (859) [art] a stiffnecked {6203} {7186} people. {5971}

9:7 ¶ Remember, {2142} <8798> [and] forget {7911} <8799> not, (408) (853) how (834) thou provokedst (7107) (853) the LORD {3068} thy God {430} to wrath [7107] <8689> in the wilderness: {4057} from {4480} the day {3117} that (834) thou didst depart (3318) out [3318] <8804> of the land {776} (4480) of Egypt, {4714} until (5704) ye came {935} <8800> unto (5704) this (2088) place, {4725} ye have been (1961) rebellious {4784} <8688> against {5973} the LORD. {3068}

9:8 Also in Horeb {2722} ye provoked {7107} <0> (853) the LORD {3068} to wrath, [7107] <8689> so that the LORD {3068} was angry {599} <8691> with you to have destroyed {8045} <8687> you.

9:9 When I was gone up {5927} <8800> into the mount {2022} to receive {3947} <8800> the tables {3871} of stone, {68} [even] the tables {3871} of the covenant {1285} which (834) the LORD {3068} made {3772} <8804> with (5973) you, then I abode {3427} <8799> in the mount {2022} forty {705} days {3117} and forty {705} nights, {3915} I neither (3808) did eat {398} <8804> bread {3899} nor (3808) drink {8354} <8804> water: {4325}

9:10 And the LORD {3068} delivered {5414} <8799> unto (413) me (853) two {8147} tables {3871} of stone {68} written {3789} <8803> with the finger {676} of God; {430} and on (5921) them [was written] according to all (3605) the words, {1697} which (834) the LORD {3068} spake {1696} <8765> with (5973) you in the mount {2022} out of the midst {8432} (4480) of the fire {784} in the day {3117} of the assembly. {6951}

9:11 And it came to pass (1961) at the end {7093} (4480) of forty {705} days {3117} and forty {705} nights, {3915} [that] the LORD {3068} gave {5414} <8804> (413) me (853) the two {8147} tables {3871} of stone, {68} [even] the tables {3871} of the covenant. {1285}

9:12 And the LORD {3068} said {559} <8799> unto (413) me, Arise, {6965} <8798> get thee down {3381} <8798> quickly {4118} from hence; (4480) (2088) for (3588) thy people {5971} which (834) thou hast brought forth {3318} <8689> out of Egypt {4714} (4480) have corrupted {7843} <8765> [themselves]; they are quickly {4118} turned aside {5493} <8804> out of (4480) the way {1870} which (834) I commanded {6680} <8765> them; they have made {6213} <8804> them a molten image. {4541}

9:13 Furthermore the LORD {3068} spake {559} <8799> unto (413) me, saying, {559} <8800> I have seen {7200} <8804> (853) this (2088) people, {5971} and, behold, (2009) it (1931) [is] a stiffnecked {6203} {7186} people: {5971}

9:14 Let me alone, {7503} <8685> (4480) that I may destroy {8045} <8686> them, and blot out {4229} <8799> (853) their name {8034} from under (4480) (8478) heaven: {8064} and I will make {6213} <8799> of [854] thee a nation {1471} mightier {6099} and greater {7227} than (4480) they.

9:15 So I turned {6437} <8799> and came down {3381} <8799> from (4480) the mount, {2022} and the mount {2022} burned {1197} <8802> with fire: {784} and the two {8147} tables {3871} of the covenant {1285} [were] in (5921) my two {8147} hands. {3027}

9:16 And I looked, {7200} <8799> and, behold, (2009) ye had sinned {2398} <8804> against the LORD {3068} your God, {430} [and] had made {6213} <8804> you a molten {4541} calf: {5695} ye had turned aside {5493} <8804> quickly {4118} out of (4480) the way {1870} which (834) the LORD {3068} had commanded {6680} <8765> you.

9:17 And I took {8610} <8799> the two {8147} tables, {3871} and cast {7993} <8686> them out of {5921} (4480) my two {8147} hands, {3027} and brake {7665} <8762> them before your eyes. {5869}

9:18 And I fell down {5307} <8691> before {6440} the LORD, {3068} as at the first, {7223} forty {705} days {3117} and forty {705} nights: {3915} I did neither (3808) eat {398} <8804> bread, {3899} nor (3808) drink {8354} <8804> water, {4325} because of (5921) all (3605) your sins {2403} which (834) ye sinned, {2398} <8804> in doing {6213} <8800> wickedly {7451} in the sight {5869} of the LORD, {3068} to provoke him to anger. {3707} <8687>

9:19 For (3588) I was afraid {3025} <8804> of {6440} (4480) the anger {639} and hot displeasure, {2534} wherewith (834) the LORD {3068} was wroth {7107} <8804> against (5921) you to destroy {8045} <8687> you. But the LORD {3068} hearkened {8085} <8799> unto (413) me at that (1931) time {6471} also. (1571)

9:20 And the LORD {3068} was very [3966] angry {599} <8694> (3966) with Aaron {175} to have destroyed {8045} <8687> him: and I prayed {6419} <8691> for (1157) Aaron {175} also (1571) the same (1931) time. {6256}

9:21 And I took {3947} <8804> your sin, {2403} (853) the calf {5695} which (834) ye had made, {6213} <8804> and burnt {8313} <8799> it with fire, {784} and stamped {3807} <8799> it, [and] ground {2912} <8800> [it] very small, {3190} <8687> [even] until (5704) it (834) was as small {1854} <8804> as dust: {6083} and I cast {7993} <8686> (853) the dust {6083} thereof into (413) the brook {5158} that descended (3381) out [3381] <8802> of (4480) the mount. {2022}

9:22 And at Taberah, {8404} and at Massah, {4532} and at Kibrothhattaavah, {6914} ye provoked (7107) (853) the LORD {3068} to wrath. [7107] <8688>

9:23 Likewise when the LORD {3068} sent {7971} <8800> you from Kadeshbarnea, {6947} (4480) saying, {559} <8800> Go up {5927} <8798> and possess {3423} <8798> (853) the land {776} which (834) I have given {5414} <8804> you; then ye rebelled [4784] <8686> against (4784) (853) the commandment {6310} of the LORD {3068} your God, {430} and ye believed {539} <8689> him not, (3808) nor (3808) hearkened {8085} <8804> to his voice. {6963}

9:24 Ye have been (1961) rebellious {4784} <8688> against (5973) the LORD {3068} from the day {3117} (4480) that I knew {3045} <8800> you.

9:25 Thus I fell down {5307} <8691> before {6440} the LORD {3068} (853) forty {705} days {3117} and forty {705} nights, {3915} as (834) I fell down {5307} <8694> [at the first]; because (3588) the LORD {3068} had said {559} <8804> he would destroy {8045} <8687> you.

9:26 I prayed {6419} <8691> therefore unto (413) the LORD, {3068} and said, {559} <8799> O Lord {136} GOD, {3069} destroy {7843} <8686> not (408) thy people {5971} and thine inheritance, {5159} which (834) thou hast redeemed {6299} <8804> through thy greatness, {1433} which (834) thou hast brought forth {3318} <8689> out of Egypt {4714} (4480) with a mighty {2389} hand. {3027}

9:27 Remember {2142} <8798> thy servants, {5650} Abraham, {85} Isaac, {3327} and Jacob; {3290} look {6437} <8799> not (408) unto (413) the stubbornness {7190} of this (2088) people, {5971} nor to (413) their wickedness, {7562} nor to (413) their sin: {2403}

9:28 Lest (6435) the land {776} whence (834) (4480) (8034) thou broughtest us out {3318} <8689> say, {559} <8799> Because the LORD {3068} was not able {3201} <8800> (4480) (1097) to bring {935} <8687> them into (413) the land {776} which (834) he promised {1696} <8765> them, and because he hated {8135} (4480) them, he hath brought them out {3318} <8689> to slay {4191} <8687> them in the wilderness. {4057}

9:29 Yet they (1992) [are] thy people {5971} and thine inheritance, {5159} which (834) thou broughtest out {3318} <8689> by thy mighty {1419} power {3581} and by thy stretched out {5186} <8803> arm. {2220}
