Chapter 5

1  Esther, adventuring on the king's favour, obtaineth the grace of the golden sceptre, and inviteth the king and Haman to a banquet.  6  She, being encouraged by the king in her suit, inviteth them to another banquet the next day.  9  Haman, proud of his advancement, repineth at the contempt of Mordecai.  14  By the counsel of Zeresh he buildeth for him a pair of gallows.

5:1 ¶ Now it came to pass (1961) on the third {7992} day, {3117} that Esther {635} put on {3847} <8799> [her] royal {4438} [apparel], and stood {5975} <8799> in the inner {6442} court {2691} of the king's {4428} house, {1004} over against {5227} the king's {4428} house: {1004} and the king {4428} sat {3427} <8802> upon (5921) his royal {4438} throne {3678} in the royal {4438} house, {1004} over against {5227} the gate {6607} of the house. {1004}

5:2 And it was (1961) so, when the king {4428} saw {7200} <8800> (853) Esther {635} the queen {4436} standing {5975} <8802> in the court, {2691} [that] she obtained {5375} <8804> favour {2580} in his sight: {5869} and the king {4428} held out {3447} <8686> to Esther {635} (853) the golden {2091} sceptre {8275} that (834) [was] in his hand. {3027} So Esther {635} drew near, {7126} <8799> and touched {5060} <8799> the top {7218} of the sceptre. {8275}

5:3 Then said {559} <8799> the king {4428} unto her, What (4100) wilt thou, queen {4436} Esther? {635} and what (4100) [is] thy request? {1246} it shall be even given {5414} <8735> thee to (5704) the half {2677} of the kingdom. {4438}

5:4 And Esther {635} answered, {559} <8799> If (518) [it seem] good {2895} <8804> unto (5921) the king, {4428} let the king {4428} and Haman {2001} come {935} <8799> this day {3117} unto (413) the banquet {4960} that (834) I have prepared {6213} <8804> for him.

5:5 Then the king {4428} said, {559} <8799> Cause (853) Haman {2001} to make haste, {4116} <8761> that he may do {6213} <8800> (853) as Esther {635} hath said. {1697} So the king {4428} and Haman {2001} came {935} <8799> to (413) the banquet {4960} that (834) Esther {635} had prepared. {6213} <8804>

5:6 ¶ And the king {4428} said {559} <8799> unto Esther {635} at the banquet {4960} of wine, {3196} What (4100) [is] thy petition? {7596} and it shall be granted {5414} <8735> thee: and what (4100) [is] thy request? {1246} even to (5704) the half {2677} of the kingdom {4438} it shall be performed. {6213} <8735>

5:7 Then answered {6030} <8799> Esther, {635} and said, {559} <8799> My petition {7596} and my request {1246} [is];

5:8 If (518) I have found {4672} <8804> favour {2580} in the sight {5869} of the king, {4428} and if (518) it please {2895} <8804> (5921) the king {4428} to grant {5414} <8800> (853) my petition, {7596} and to perform {6213} <8800> (853) my request, {1246} let the king {4428} and Haman {2001} come {935} <8799> to (413) the banquet {4960} that (834) I shall prepare {6213} <8799> for them, and I will do {6213} <8799> to morrow {4279} as the king {4428} hath said. {1697}

5:9 ¶ Then went [3318] <0> Haman [2001] forth {3318} <8799> (2001) that (1931) day {3117} joyful {8056} and with a glad {2896} heart: {3820} but when Haman {2001} saw {7200} <8800> (853) Mordecai {4782} in the king's {4428} gate, {8179} that he stood not up, {6965} <8804> (3808) nor (3808) moved {2111} <8804> for (4480) him, (2001) he {2001} was full {4390} <8735> of indignation {2534} against (5921) Mordecai. {4782}

5:10 Nevertheless Haman {2001} refrained [662] <8691> himself: (662) and when he came {935} <8799> (413) home, {1004} he sent {7971} <8799> and called {935} <8686> for (853) his friends, {157} <8802> and Zeresh {2238} his wife. {802}

5:11 And Haman {2001} told {5608} <8762> them of (853) the glory {3519} of his riches, {6239} and the multitude {7230} of his children, {1121} and all (3605) [the things] wherein (834) the king {4428} had promoted {1431} <8765> him, and how (834) he had advanced {5375} <8765> him above (5921) the princes {8269} and servants {5650} of the king. {4428}

5:12 Haman {2001} said {559} <8799> moreover, (637) Yea, Esther {635} the queen {4436} did let no (3808) man come in {935} <8689> with (5973) the king {4428} unto (413) the banquet {4960} that (834) she had prepared {6213} <8804> but (3588) (518) myself; and to morrow {4279} am I (589) invited {7121} <8803> unto her also (1571) with (5973) the king. {4428}

5:13 Yet all (3605) this (2088) availeth {7737} <8802> me nothing, (369) so long (3605) (6256) as [6256] I (589) see {7200} <8802> (853) Mordecai {4782} the Jew {3064} sitting {3427} <8802> at the king's {4428} gate. {8179}

5:14 ¶ Then said {559} <8799> Zeresh {2238} his wife {802} and all (3605) his friends {157} <8802> unto him, Let a gallows {6086} be made {6213} <8799> of fifty {2572} cubits {520} high, {1364} and to morrow {1242} speak {559} <8798> thou unto the king {4428} that (853) Mordecai {4782} may be hanged {8518} <8799> thereon: (5921) then go {935} <8798> thou in merrily {8056} with (5973) the king {4428} unto (413) the banquet. {4960} And the thing {1697} pleased {3190} {6440} <8799> Haman; {2001} and he caused [6213] <0> the gallows {6086} to be made. {6213} <8799>
