Chapter 1

1  The children of Israel, after Joseph's death, do multiply.  8  The more they are oppressed by a new king, the more they multiply.  15  The godliness of the midwives, in saving the men children alive.  22  Pharaoh commandeth the male children to be cast into the river.

1:1 ¶ Now these (428) [are] the names {8034} of the children {1121} of Israel, {3478} which came {935} <8802> into Egypt; {4714} every man {376} and his household {1004} came {935} <8804> with (854) Jacob. {3290}

1:2 Reuben, {7205} Simeon, {8095} Levi, {3878} and Judah, {3063}

1:3 Issachar, {3485} Zebulun, {2074} and Benjamin, {1144}

1:4 Dan, {1835} and Naphtali, {5321} Gad, {1410} and Asher. {836}

1:5 And all (3605) the souls {5315} that came out {3318} <8802> of the loins {3409} of Jacob {3290} were (1961) seventy {7657} souls: {5315} for Joseph {3130} was (1961) in Egypt {4714} [already].

1:6 And Joseph {3130} died, {4191} <8799> and all (3605) his brethren, {251} and all (3605) that (1931) generation. {1755}

1:7 ¶ And the children {1121} of Israel {3478} were fruitful, {6509} <8804> and increased abundantly, {8317} <8799> and multiplied, {7235} <8799> and waxed exceeding {3966} mighty; {6105} {3966} <8799> and the land {776} was filled {4390} <8735> with (854) them.

1:8 Now there arose up {6965} <8799> a new {2319} king {4428} over (5921) Egypt, {4714} which (834) knew {3045} <8804> not (3808) (853) Joseph. {3130}

1:9 And he said {559} <8799> unto (413) his people, {5971} Behold, (2009) the people {5971} of the children {1121} of Israel {3478} [are] more {7227} and mightier {6099} than (4480) we:

1:10 Come (3051) on, [3051] <8798> let us deal wisely {2449} <8691> with them; lest (6435) they multiply, {7235} <8799> and it come to pass, (1961) that, when (3588) there falleth out {7122} <8799> any war, {4421} they {1931} join {3254} <8738> also (1571) unto (5921) our enemies, {8130} <8802> and fight {3898} <8738> against us, and [so] get them up {5927} <8804> out of (4480) the land. {776}

1:11 Therefore they did set {7760} <8799> over (5921) them taskmasters {4522} {8269} to (4616) afflict {6031} <8763> them with their burdens. {5450} And they built {1129} <8799> for Pharaoh {6547} treasure {4543} cities, {5892} (853) Pithom {6619} and Raamses. {7486}

1:12 But the more (834) they afflicted {6031} <8762> them, the more {3651} they multiplied {7235} <8799> and grew. {6555} <8799> (3651) And they were grieved {6973} <8799> because {6440} (4480) of the children {1121} of Israel. {3478}

1:13 And the Egyptians {4714} made [5647] <0> (853) the children {1121} of Israel {3478} to serve {5647} <8686> with rigour: {6531}

1:14 And they made [4843] <0> (853) their lives {2416} bitter {4843} <8762> with hard {7186} bondage, {5656} in morter, {2563} and in brick, {3843} and in all manner (3605) of service {5656} in the field: {7704} (853) all (3605) their service, {5656} wherein (834) they made them serve, {5647} <8804> [was] with rigour. {6531}

1:15 ¶ And the king {4428} of Egypt {4714} spake {559} <8799> to the Hebrew {5680} midwives, {3205} <8764> of which (834) the name {8034} of the one {259} [was] Shiphrah, {8236} and the name {8034} of the other {8145} Puah: {6326}

1:16 And he said, {559} <8799> When ye do the office of a midwife {3205} <8763> to (853) the Hebrew women, {5680} and see {7200} <8804> [them] upon (5921) the stools; {70} if (518) it (1931) [be] a son, {1121} then ye shall kill {4191} <8689> him: but if (518) it (1931) [be] a daughter, {1323} then she shall live. {2425} <8804>

1:17 But the midwives {3205} <8764> feared {3372} <8799> (853) God, {430} and did {6213} <8804> not (3808) as (834) the king {4428} of Egypt {4714} commanded {1696} <8765> (413) them, but saved {2421} <0> (853) the men children {3206} alive. [2421] <8762>

1:18 And the king {4428} of Egypt {4714} called [7121] <8799> for (7121) the midwives, {3205} <8764> and said {559} <8799> unto them, Why {4069} have ye done {6213} <8804> this (2088) thing, {1697} and have saved {2421} <0> (853) the men children {3206} alive? [2421] <8762>

1:19 And the midwives {3205} <8764> said {559} <8799> unto (413) Pharaoh, {6547} Because (3588) the Hebrew [5680] women [802] (5680) [are] not (3808) as the Egyptian (4713) women; [4713] (802) for (3588) they (2007) [are] lively, {2422} and are delivered {3205} <8804> ere {2962} the midwives {3205} <8764> come in {935} <8799> unto (413) them.

1:20 Therefore God {430} dealt well {3190} <8686> with the midwives: {3205} <8764> and the people {5971} multiplied, {7235} <8799> and waxed very [3966] mighty. {6105} <8799> (3966)

1:21 And it came to pass, (1961) because (3588) the midwives {3205} <8764> feared {3372} <8804> (853) God, {430} that he made {6213} <8799> them houses. {1004}

1:22 And Pharaoh {6547} charged {6680} <8762> all (3605) his people, {5971} saying, {559} <8800> Every (3605) son {1121} that is born {3209} ye shall cast {7993} <8686> into the river, {2975} and every (3605) daughter {1323} ye shall save alive. {2421} <8762>
