Chapter 12

1  The beginning of the year is changed.  3  The Passover is instituted.  11  The rite of the Passover.  15  Unleavened bread.  29  The firstborn are slain.  31  The Israelites are driven out of the land.  37  They come to Succoth.  43  The ordinance of the Passover.

12:1 ¶ And the LORD {3068} spake {559} <8799> unto (413) Moses {4872} and Aaron {175} in the land {776} of Egypt, {4714} saying, {559} <8800>

12:2 This (2088) month {2320} [shall be] unto you the beginning {7218} of months: {2320} it (1931) [shall be] the first {7223} month {2320} of the year {8141} to you.

12:3 ¶ Speak {1696} <8761> ye unto (413) all (3605) the congregation {5712} of Israel, {3478} saying, {559} <8800> In the tenth {6218} [day] of this (2088) month {2320} they shall take {3947} <8799> to them every man {376} a lamb, {7716} according to the house {1004} of [their] fathers, {1} a lamb {7716} for an house: {1004}

12:4 And if (518) the household {1004} be [1961] <8800> too little {4591} <8799> for the lamb, {7716} {4480} (1961) let him (1931) and his neighbour {7934} next {7138} unto (413) his house {1004} take {3947} <8804> [it] according to the number {4373} of the souls; {5315} every man {376} according [6310] to (6310) his eating {400} shall make your count {3699} <8799> for (5921) the lamb. {7716}

12:5 Your lamb {7716} shall be (1961) without blemish, {8549} a male {2145} of the first {1121} year: {8141} ye shall take [3947] <8799> [it] out (3947) from (4480) the sheep, {3532} or from (4480) the goats: {5795}

12:6 And ye shall keep {4931} (1961) it up until (5704) the fourteenth {702} {6240} day {3117} of the same (2088) month: {2320} and the whole {3605} assembly {6951} of the congregation {5712} of Israel {3478} shall kill {7819} <8804> it in {996} the evening. {6153}

12:7 And they shall take {3947} <8804> of (4480) the blood, {1818} and strike {5414} <8804> [it] on (5921) the two {8147} side posts {4201} and on (5921) the upper door post {4947} of (5921) the houses, {1004} wherein (834) they shall eat {398} <8799> it.

12:8 And they shall eat {398} <8804> (853) the flesh {1320} in that (2088) night, {3915} roast {6748} with fire, {784} and unleavened bread; {4682} [and] with (5921) bitter {4844} [herbs] they shall eat {398} <8799> it.

12:9 Eat {398} <8799> not (408) of (4480) it raw, {4995} nor sodden [1310] <8794> [1311] at all (1311) (1310) with water, {4325} but (3588) (518) roast {6748} [with] fire; {784} his head {7218} with (5921) his legs, {3767} and with (5921) the purtenance {7130} thereof.

12:10 And ye shall let nothing (3808) of (4480) it remain {3498} <8686> until (5704) the morning; {1242} and that which remaineth {3498} <8737> of (4480) it until (5704) the morning {1242} ye shall burn {8313} <8799> with fire. {784}

12:11 ¶ And thus {3602} shall ye eat {398} <8799> it; [with] your loins {4975} girded, {2296} <8803> your shoes {5275} on your feet, {7272} and your staff {4731} in your hand; {3027} and ye shall eat {398} <8804> it in haste: {2649} it (1931) [is] the LORD'S {3068} passover. {6453}

12:12 For I will pass [5674] <8804> through (5674) the land {776} of Egypt {4714} this (2088) night, {3915} and will smite {5221} <8689> all (3605) the firstborn {1060} in the land {776} of Egypt, {4714} both man {120} (4480) and beast; {929} and against all (3605) the gods {430} of Egypt {4714} I will execute {6213} <8799> judgment: {8201} I (589) [am] the LORD. {3068}

12:13 And the blood {1818} shall be (1961) to you for a token {226} upon (5921) the houses {1004} where (834) ye (859) [are]: and when I see {7200} <8804> (853) the blood, {1818} I will pass {6452} <8804> over (5921) you, and the plague {5063} shall not (3808) be (1961) upon you to destroy {4889} [you], when I smite {5221} <8687> the land {776} of Egypt. {4714}

12:14 And this (2088) day {3117} shall be (1961) unto you for a memorial; {2146} and ye shall keep {2287} <8804> it a feast {2282} to the LORD {3068} throughout your generations; {1755} ye shall keep it a feast {2287} <8799> by an ordinance {2708} for ever. {5769}

12:15 Seven {7651} days {3117} shall ye eat {398} <8799> unleavened bread; {4682} even {389} the first {7223} day {3117} ye shall put away {7673} <8686> leaven {7603} out of your houses: {1004} (4480) for (3588) whosoever (3605) eateth {398} <8802> leavened bread {2557} from the first [7223] day {3117} (4480) (7223) until (5704) the seventh {7637} day, {3117} that (1931) soul {5315} shall be cut [3772] <8738> off (3772) from Israel. {3478} (4480)

12:16 And in the first {7223} day {3117} [there shall be] an holy {6944} convocation, {4744} and in the seventh {7637} day {3117} there shall be (1961) an holy {6944} convocation {4744} to you; no (3808) manner (3605) of work {4399} shall be done {6213} <8735> in them, save {389} [that] which (834) every (3605) man {5315} must eat, {398} <8735> that (1931) only (905) may be done {6213} <8735> of you.

12:17 And ye shall observe {8104} <8804> (853) [the feast of] unleavened bread; {4682} for (3588) in this (2088) selfsame {6106} day {3117} have I brought [3318] <8689> your armies [6635] out (3318) (853) (6635) of the land {776} (4480) of Egypt: {4714} therefore shall ye observe {8104} <8804> (853) this (2088) day {3117} in your generations {1755} by an ordinance {2708} for ever. {5769}

12:18 ¶ In the first {7223} [month], on the fourteenth {6240} {702} day {3117} of the month {2320} at even, {6153} ye shall eat {398} <8799> unleavened bread, {4682} until (5704) the one {259} and twentieth {6242} day {3117} of the month {2320} at even. {6153}

12:19 Seven {7651} days {3117} shall there be no (3808) leaven {7603} found {4672} <8735> in your houses: {1004} for (3588) whosoever (3605) eateth {398} <8802> that which is leavened, [2556] <8688> (2557) even that (1931) soul {5315} shall be cut off {3772} <8738> from the congregation {5712} (4480) of Israel, {3478} whether he be a stranger, {1616} or born {249} in the land. {776}

12:20 Ye shall eat {398} <8799> nothing (3605) (3808) leavened; [2556] <8688> (2557) in all (3605) your habitations {4186} shall ye eat {398} <8799> unleavened bread. {4682}

12:21 ¶ Then Moses {4872} called {7121} <8799> for all (3605) the elders {2205} of Israel, {3478} and said {559} <8799> unto (413) them, Draw out {4900} <8798> and take {3947} <8798> you a lamb {6629} according to your families, {4940} and kill {7819} <8798> the passover. {6453}

12:22 And ye shall take {3947} <8804> a bunch {92} of hyssop, {231} and dip {2881} <8804> [it] in the blood {1818} that (834) [is] in the bason, {5592} and strike {5060} <8689> (413) the lintel {4947} and the two {8147} side posts {4201} with (4480) the blood {1818} that (834) [is] in the bason; {5592} and none {376} (3808) of you (859) shall go out {3318} <8799> at the door {6607} (4480) of his house {1004} until (5704) the morning. {1242}

12:23 For the LORD {3068} will pass through {5674} <8804> to smite {5062} <8800> (853) the Egyptians; {4714} and when he seeth {7200} <8804> (853) the blood {1818} upon (5921) the lintel, {4947} and on (5921) the two {8147} side posts, {4201} the LORD {3068} will pass (6452) over [6452] <8804> (5921) the door, {6607} and will not (3808) suffer {5414} <8799> the destroyer {7843} <8688> to come [935] <8800> in (935) unto (413) your houses {1004} to smite {5062} <8800> [you].

12:24 And ye shall observe {8104} <8804> (853) this (2088) thing {1697} for an ordinance {2706} to thee and to thy sons {1121} for [5704] ever. {5769} (5704)

12:25 And it shall come to pass, (1961) when (3588) ye be come {935} <8799> to (413) the land {776} which (834) the LORD {3068} will give {5414} <8799> you, according as (834) he hath promised, {1696} <8765> that ye shall keep {8104} <8804> (853) this (2063) service. {5656}

12:26 And it shall come to pass, (1961) when (3588) your children {1121} shall say {559} <8799> unto (413) you, What (4100) mean ye by this (2063) service? {5656}

12:27 That ye shall say, {559} <8804> It (1931) [is] the sacrifice {2077} of the LORD'S {3068} passover, {6453} who (834) passed {6452} <8804> over (5921) the houses {1004} of the children {1121} of Israel {3478} in Egypt, {4714} when he smote {5062} <8800> (853) the Egyptians, {4714} and delivered {5337} <8689> our houses. {1004} And the people {5971} bowed the head {6915} <8799> and worshipped. {7812} <8691>

12:28 And the children {1121} of Israel {3478} went away, [3212] <8799> (1980) and did {6213} <8799> as (834) the LORD {3068} had commanded {6680} <8765> (853) Moses {4872} and Aaron, {175} so (3651) did {6213} <8804> they.

12:29 ¶ And it came to pass, (1961) that at midnight {2677} {3915} the LORD {3068} smote {5221} <8689> all (3605) the firstborn {1060} in the land {776} of Egypt, {4714} from the firstborn {1060} (4480) of Pharaoh {6547} that sat {3427} <8802> on (5921) his throne {3678} unto (5704) the firstborn {1060} of the captive {7628} that (834) [was] in the dungeon; {1004} {953} and all (3605) the firstborn {1060} of cattle. {929}

12:30 And Pharaoh {6547} rose up {6965} <8799> in the night, {3915} he, (1931) and all (3605) his servants, {5650} and all (3605) the Egyptians; {4714} and there was (1961) a great {1419} cry {6818} in Egypt; {4714} for (3588) [there was] not (369) a house {1004} where (834) (8033) [there was] not (369) one dead. {4191} <8801>

12:31 ¶ And he called {7121} <8799> for Moses {4872} and Aaron {175} by night, {3915} and said, {559} <8799> Rise up, {6965} <8798> [and] get you forth {3318} <8798> from among {8432} (4480) my people, {5971} both (1571) ye (859) and (1571) the children {1121} of Israel; {3478} and go, [3212] <8798> (1980) serve {5647} <8798> (853) the LORD, {3068} as ye have said. {1696} <8763>

12:32 Also (1571) take {3947} <8798> your flocks {6629} and (1571) your herds, {1241} as (834) ye have said, {1696} <8765> and be gone; [3212] <8798> (1980) and bless {1288} <8765> me also. (1571)

12:33 And the Egyptians {4714} were urgent {2388} <8799> upon (5921) the people, {5971} that they might send [7971] <8763> them out (7971) of (4480) the land {776} in haste; {4116} <8763> for (3588) they said, {559} <8804> We [be] all (3605) dead {4191} <8801> [men].

12:34 And the people {5971} took {5375} <8799> (853) their dough {1217} before (2962) it was leavened, {2556} <8799> their kneadingtroughs {4863} being bound up {6887} <8803> in their clothes {8071} upon (5921) their shoulders. {7926}

12:35 And the children {1121} of Israel {3478} did {6213} <8804> according to the word {1697} of Moses; {4872} and they borrowed {7592} <8799> of the Egyptians {4714} (4480) jewels {3627} of silver, {3701} and jewels {3627} of gold, {2091} and raiment: {8071}

12:36 And the LORD {3068} gave {5414} <8804> the people {5971} (853) favour {2580} in the sight {5869} of the Egyptians, {4714} so that they lent {7592} <8686> unto them [such things as they required]. And they spoiled {5337} <8762> (853) the Egyptians. {4714}

12:37 ¶ And the children {1121} of Israel {3478} journeyed {5265} <8799> from Rameses {7486} (4480) to Succoth, {5523} about six {8337} hundred {3967} thousand {505} on foot {7273} [that were] men, {1397} beside {905} children. {2945} (4480)

12:38 And a mixed {6154} multitude {7227} went up {5927} <8804> also (1571) with (854) them; and flocks, {6629} and herds, {1241} [even] very {3966} much {3515} cattle. {4735}

12:39 And they baked {644} <8799> unleavened {4682} cakes {5692} of (853) the dough {1217} which (834) they brought forth {3318} <8689> out of Egypt, {4714} (4480) for (3588) it was not leavened; {2556} <8804> (3808) because (3588) they were thrust out {1644} <8795> of Egypt, {4714} (4480) and could {3201} <8804> not (3808) tarry, {4102} <8699> neither (1571) (3808) had they prepared {6213} <8804> for themselves any victual. {6720}

12:40 ¶ Now the sojourning {4186} of the children {1121} of Israel, {3478} who (834) dwelt {3427} <8804> in Egypt, {4714} [was] four {702} hundred {3967} [8141] and thirty {7970} years. {8141}

12:41 And it came to pass (1961) at the end {7093} (4480) of the four {702} hundred {3967} [8141] and thirty {7970} years, {8141} even the selfsame {6106} (2088) day {3117} it came to pass, (1961) that all (3605) the hosts {6635} of the LORD {3068} went out {3318} <8804> from the land {776} (4480) of Egypt. {4714}

12:42 It (1931) [is] a night {3915} to be much observed {8107} unto the LORD {3068} for bringing [3318] <8687> them out (3318) from the land {776} (4480) of Egypt: {4714} this (2088) [is] that (1931) night {3915} of the LORD {3068} to be observed {8107} of all (3605) the children {1121} of Israel {3478} in their generations. {1755}

12:43 ¶ And the LORD {3068} said {559} <8799> unto (413) Moses {4872} and Aaron, {175} This (2063) [is] the ordinance {2708} of the passover: {6453} There shall no (3808) (3605) stranger {1121} {5236} eat {398} <8799> thereof:

12:44 But every (3605) man's {376} servant {5650} that is bought {4736} for money, {3701} when thou hast circumcised {4135} <8804> him, then (227) shall he eat {398} <8799> thereof.

12:45 A foreigner {8453} and an hired servant {7916} shall not (3808) eat {398} <8799> thereof.

12:46 In one {259} house {1004} shall it be eaten; {398} <8735> thou shalt not (3808) carry forth {3318} <8686> ought of (4480) the flesh {1320} abroad {2351} out of (4480) the house; {1004} neither (3808) shall ye break {7665} <8799> a bone {6106} thereof.

12:47 All (3605) the congregation {5712} of Israel {3478} shall keep {6213} <8799> it.

12:48 And when (3588) a stranger {1616} shall sojourn {1481} <8799> with (854) thee, and will keep {6213} <8804> the passover {6453} to the LORD, {3068} let all (3605) his males {2145} be circumcised, {4135} <8736> and then (227) let him come near {7126} <8799> and keep {6213} <8800> it; and he shall be (1961) as one that is born [249] in (249) the land: {776} for no uncircumcised person {6189} (3808) (3605) shall eat {398} <8799> thereof.

12:49 One {259} law {8451} shall be (1961) to him that is homeborn, {249} and unto the stranger {1616} that sojourneth {1481} <8802> among {8432} you.

12:50 Thus did {6213} <8799> all (3605) the children {1121} of Israel; {3478} as (834) the LORD {3068} commanded {6680} <8765> (853) Moses {4872} and Aaron, {175} so (3651) did {6213} <8804> they.

12:51 And it came to pass (1961) the selfsame {6106} (2088) day, {3117} [that] the LORD {3068} did bring {3318} <8689> (853) the children {1121} of Israel {3478} out of the land {776} (4480) of Egypt {4714} by (5921) their armies. {6635}
