Chapter 17

1  The people murmur for water at Rephidim.  5  God sendeth them for water to the rock in Horeb.  8  Amalek is overcome by the holding up of Moses' hands.  15  Moses buildeth the altar JEHOVAH-nissi.

17:1 ¶ And all (3605) the congregation {5712} of the children {1121} of Israel {3478} journeyed {5265} <8799> from the wilderness {4057} (4480) of Sin, {5512} after their journeys, {4550} according to (5921) the commandment {6310} of the LORD, {3068} and pitched {2583} <8799> in Rephidim: {7508} and [there was] no (369) water {4325} for the people {5971} to drink. {8354} <8800>

17:2 Wherefore the people {5971} did chide {7378} <8799> with (5973) Moses, {4872} and said, {559} <8799> Give {5414} <8798> us water {4325} that we may drink. {8354} <8799> And Moses {4872} said {559} <8799> unto them, Why (4100) chide {7378} <8799> ye with (5978) me? wherefore (4100) do ye tempt {5254} <8762> (853) the LORD? {3068}

17:3 And the people {5971} thirsted {6770} <8799> there (8033) for water; {4325} and the people {5971} murmured {3885} <8686> against (5921) Moses, {4872} and said, {559} <8799> Wherefore (4100) [is] this (2088) [that] thou hast brought [5927] <8689> us up (5927) out of Egypt, {4714} (4480) to kill {4191} <8687> us and our children {1121} and our cattle {4735} with thirst? {6772}

17:4 And Moses {4872} cried {6817} <8799> unto (413) the LORD, {3068} saying, {559} <8800> What (4100) shall I do {6213} <8799> unto this (2088) people? {5971} they be almost {4592} ready (5750) to stone {5619} <8804> me.

17:5 And the LORD {3068} said {559} <8799> unto (413) Moses, {4872} Go on {5674} <8798> before {6440} the people, {5971} and take {3947} <8798> with (854) thee of the elders {2205} (4480) of Israel; {3478} and thy rod, {4294} wherewith (834) thou smotest {5221} <8689> (853) the river, {2975} take {3947} <8798> in thine hand, {3027} and go. {1980} <8804>

17:6 Behold, (2009) I will stand {5975} <8802> before {6440} thee there (8033) upon (5921) the rock {6697} in Horeb; {2722} and thou shalt smite {5221} <8689> the rock, {6697} and there shall come {3318} <8804> water {4325} out of (4480) it, that the people {5971} may drink. {8354} <8804> And Moses {4872} did {6213} <8799> so (3651) in the sight {5869} of the elders {2205} of Israel. {3478}

17:7 And he called {7121} <8799> the name {8034} of the place {4725} Massah, {4532} and Meribah, {4809} because of (5921) the chiding {7379} of the children {1121} of Israel, {3478} and because (5921) they tempted {5254} <8763> (853) the LORD, {3068} saying, {559} <8800> Is {3426} the LORD {3068} among {7130} us, or (518) not? (369)

17:8 ¶ Then came {935} <8799> Amalek, {6002} and fought {3898} <8735> with (5973) Israel {3478} in Rephidim. {7508}

17:9 And Moses {4872} said {559} <8799> unto (413) Joshua, {3091} Choose us out {977} <8798> men, [582] (376) and go out, {3318} <8798> fight {3898} <8734> with Amalek: {6002} to morrow {4279} I (595) will stand {5324} <8737> on (5921) the top {7218} of the hill {1389} with the rod {4294} of God {430} in mine hand. {3027}

17:10 So Joshua {3091} did {6213} <8799> as (834) Moses {4872} had said {559} <8804> to him, and fought {3898} <8736> with Amalek: {6002} and Moses, {4872} Aaron, {175} and Hur {2354} went up {5927} <8804> to the top {7218} of the hill. {1389}

17:11 And it came to pass, (1961) when (834) Moses {4872} held up {7311} <8686> his hand, {3027} that Israel {3478} prevailed: {1396} <8804> and when (834) he let down {5117} <8686> his hand, {3027} Amalek {6002} prevailed. {1396} <8804>

17:12 But Moses' {4872} hands {3027} [were] heavy; {3515} and they took {3947} <8799> a stone, {68} and put {7760} <8799> [it] under (8478) him, and he sat {3427} <8799> thereon; (5921) and Aaron {175} and Hur {2354} stayed up {8551} <8804> his hands, {3027} the one (259) on the one side, [259] (4480) (2088) and the other (259) on the other side; [259] (4480) (2088) and his hands {3027} were (1961) steady {530} until (5704) the going down {935} <8800> of the sun. {8121}

17:13 And Joshua {3091} discomfited {2522} <8799> (853) Amalek {6002} and his people {5971} with the edge {6310} of the sword. {2719}

17:14 And the LORD {3068} said {559} <8799> unto (413) Moses, {4872} Write {3789} <8798> this (2063) [for] a memorial {2146} in a book, {5612} and rehearse {7760} <8798> [it] in the ears {241} of Joshua: {3091} for (3588) I will utterly [4229] <8800> put out {4229} <8799> (853) the remembrance {2143} of Amalek {6002} from under (4480) (8478) heaven. {8064}

17:15 And Moses {4872} built {1129} <8799> an altar, {4196} and called {7121} <8799> the name {8034} of it Jehovahnissi: {3071}

17:16 For he said, {559} <8799> Because (3588) the LORD {3050} hath sworn {3027} {3676} (5921) [that] the LORD {3068} [will have] war {4421} with Amalek {6002} from generation {1755} (4480) to generation. {1755}
