1  Jethro bringeth to Moses his wife and two sons.  7  Moses entertaineth him.  13  Jethro's counsel is accepted.  27  Jethro departeth.

18:1 ¶ When Jethro, {3503} the priest {3548} of Midian, {4080} Moses' {4872} father in law, {2859} <8802> heard {8085} <8799> (853) of all (3605) that (834) God {430} had done {6213} <8804> for Moses, {4872} and for Israel {3478} his people, {5971} [and] that (3588) the LORD {3068} had brought [3318] <8689> Israel [3478] out (3318) (853) (3478) of Egypt; {4714} (4480)

18:2 Then Jethro, {3503} Moses' {4872} father in law, {2859} <8802> took {3947} <8799> (853) Zipporah, {6855} Moses' {4872} wife, {802} after {310} he had sent her back, {7964}

18:3 And her two {8147} sons; {1121} of which (834) the name {8034} of the one {259} [was] Gershom; [1647] (1648) for (3588) he said, {559} <8804> I have been (1961) an alien {1616} in a strange {5237} land: {776}

18:4 And the name {8034} of the other {259} [was] Eliezer; {461} for (3588) the God {430} of my father, {1} [said he, was] mine help, {5828} and delivered {5337} <8686> me from the sword {2719} (4480) of Pharaoh: {6547}

18:5 And Jethro, {3503} Moses' {4872} father in law, {2859} <8802> came {935} <8799> with his sons {1121} and his wife {802} unto (413) Moses {4872} into (413) the wilderness, {4057} where (834) (8033) he (1931) encamped {2583} <8802> at the mount {2022} of God: {430}

18:6 And he said {559} <8799> unto (413) Moses, {4872} I (589) thy father in law {2859} <8802> Jethro {3503} am come {935} <8802> unto (413) thee, and thy wife, {802} and her two {8147} sons {1121} with (5973) her.

18:7 ¶ And Moses {4872} went out {3318} <8799> to meet {7125} <8800> his father in law, {2859} <8802> and did obeisance, {7812} <8691> and kissed {5401} <8799> him; and they asked {7592} <8799> each {376} other {7453} of [their] welfare; {7965} and they came {935} <8799> into the tent. {168}

18:8 And Moses {4872} told {5608} <8762> his father in law {2859} <8802> (853) all (3605) that (834) the LORD {3068} had done {6213} <8804> unto Pharaoh {6547} and to the Egyptians {4714} for (5921) Israel's {3478} sake, {182} [and] (853) all (3605) the travail {8513} that (834) had come [4672] <8804> upon (4672) them by the way, {1870} and [how] the LORD {3068} delivered {5337} <8686> them.

18:9 And Jethro {3503} rejoiced {2302} <8799> for (5921) all (3605) the goodness {2896} which (834) the LORD {3068} had done {6213} <8804> to Israel, {3478} whom (834) he had delivered {5337} <8689> out of the hand {3027} (4480) of the Egyptians. {4714}

18:10 And Jethro {3503} said, {559} <8799> Blessed {1288} <8803> [be] the LORD, {3068} who (834) hath delivered {5337} <8689> you out of the hand {3027} (4480) of the Egyptians, {4714} and out of the hand {3027} (4480) of Pharaoh, {6547} who (834) hath delivered {5337} <8689> (853) the people {5971} from under (4480) (8478) the hand {3027} of the Egyptians. {4714}

18:11 Now (6258) I know {3045} <8804> that (3588) the LORD {3068} [is] greater {1419} than all (4480) (3605) gods: {430} for (3588) in the thing {1697} wherein (834) they dealt proudly {2102} <8804> [he was] above (5921) them.

18:12 And Jethro, {3503} Moses' {4872} father in law, {2859} <8802> took {3947} <8799> a burnt offering {5930} and sacrifices {2077} for God: {430} and Aaron {175} came, {935} <8799> and all (3605) the elders {2205} of Israel, {3478} to eat {398} <8800> bread {3899} with (5973) Moses' {4872} father in law {2859} <8802> before {6440} God. {430}

18:13 ¶ And it came to pass (1961) on the morrow, {4283} (4480) that Moses {4872} sat {3427} <8799> to judge {8199} <8800> (853) the people: {5971} and the people {5971} stood {5975} <8799> by (5921) Moses {4872} from (4480) the morning {1242} unto (5704) the evening. {6153}

18:14 And when Moses' {4872} father in law {2859} <8802> saw {7200} <8799> (853) all (3605) that (834) he (1931) did {6213} <8802> to the people, {5971} he said, {559} <8799> What (4100) [is] this (2088) thing {1697} that (834) thou (859) doest {6213} <8802> to the people? {5971} why (4069) sittest {3427} <8802> thou (859) thyself alone, (905) and all (3605) the people {5971} stand {5324} <8737> by (5921) thee from (4480) morning {1242} unto (5704) even? {6153}

18:15 And Moses {4872} said {559} <8799> unto his father in law, {2859} <8802> Because (3588) the people {5971} come {935} <8799> unto (413) me to enquire {1875} <8800> of God: {430}

18:16 When (3588) they have (1961) a matter, {1697} they come {935} <8802> unto (413) me; and I judge {8199} <8804> between (996) one {376} and another, {7453} and I do make [them] know {3045} <8689> (853) the statutes {2706} of God, {430} and his laws. {8451}

18:17 And Moses' {4872} father in law {2859} <8802> said {559} <8799> unto (413) him, The thing {1697} that (834) thou (859) doest {6213} <8802> [is] not (3808) good. {2896}

18:18 Thou wilt surely [5034] <8800> wear away, {5034} <8799> both (1571) thou, (859) and (1571) this (2088) people {5971} that (834) [is] with (5973) thee: for (3588) this thing {1697} [is] too heavy {3515} for (4480) thee; thou art not (3808) able {3201} <8799> to perform {6213} <8800> it thyself alone. (905)

18:19 Hearken {8085} <8798> now (6258) unto my voice, {6963} I will give thee counsel, {3289} <8799> and God {430} shall be {1961} <8798> with (5973) thee: Be (1961) thou (859) for the people {5971} to God-ward, {4136} {430} that thou (859) mayest bring {935} <8689> (853) the causes {1697} unto (413) God: {430}

18:20 And thou shalt teach {2094} <8689> [853] them (853) ordinances {2706} and laws, {8451} and shalt shew {3045} <8689> them (853) the way {1870} wherein they must walk, [3212] <8799> (1980) and the work [4639] (4640) that (834) they must do. {6213} <8799>

18:21 Moreover thou (859) shalt provide {2372} <8799> out of all (4480) (3605) the people {5971} able {2428} men, [582] (376) such as fear {3373} God, {430} men [582] (376) of truth, {571} hating {8130} <8802> covetousness; {1215} and place {7760} <8804> [such] over (5921) them, [to be] rulers {8269} of thousands, {505} [and] rulers {8269} of hundreds, {3967} rulers {8269} of fifties, {2572} and rulers {8269} of tens: {6235}

18:22 And let them judge {8199} <8804> (853) the people {5971} at all (3605) seasons: {6256} and it shall be, (1961) [that] every (3605) great {1419} matter {1697} they shall bring {935} <8686> unto (413) thee, but every (3605) small {6996} matter {1697} they (1992) shall judge: {8199} <8799> so shall it be easier {7043} <8685> for (4480) (5921) thyself, and they shall bear {5375} <8804> [the burden] with (854) thee.

18:23 If (518) thou shalt do {6213} <8799> (853) this (2088) thing, {1697} and God {430} command {6680} <8765> thee [so], then thou shalt be able {3201} <8804> to endure, {5975} <8800> and all (3605) this (2088) people {5971} shall also (1571) go {935} <8799> to (5921) their place {4725} in peace. {7965}

18:24 So Moses {4872} hearkened {8085} <8799> to the voice {6963} of his father in law, {2859} <8802> and did {6213} <8799> all (3605) that (834) he had said. {559} <8804>

18:25 And Moses {4872} chose {977} <8799> able {2428} men [582] (376) out of all (4480) (3605) Israel, {3478} and made {5414} <8799> them heads {7218} over (5921) the people, {5971} rulers {8269} of thousands, {505} rulers {8269} of hundreds, {3967} rulers {8269} of fifties, {2572} and rulers {8269} of tens. {6235}

18:26 And they judged {8199} <8804> (853) the people {5971} at all (3605) seasons: {6256} the hard {7186} (853) causes {1697} they brought {935} <8686> unto (413) Moses, {4872} but every (3605) small {6996} matter {1697} [1992] they judged {8199} <8799> themselves. (1992)

18:27 ¶ And Moses {4872} let (853) his father in law {2859} <8802> depart; {7971} <8762> and he went [3212] <8799> his way (1980) into (413) his own land. {776}
