Chapter 5

1  Pharaoh chideth Moses and Aaron for their message.  5  He increaseth the Israelites' task.  15  He checketh their complaints.  20  They cry out upon Moses and Aaron.  22  Moses complaineth to God.

5:1 ¶ And afterward {310} Moses {4872} and Aaron {175} went in, {935} <8804> and told {559} <8799> (413) Pharaoh, {6547} Thus (3541) saith {559} <8804> the LORD {3068} God {430} of Israel, {3478} Let (853) my people {5971} go, {7971} <8761> that they may hold a feast {2287} <8799> unto me in the wilderness. {4057}

5:2 And Pharaoh {6547} said, {559} <8799> Who (4310) [is] the LORD, {3068} that (834) I should obey {8085} <8799> his voice {6963} to let (853) Israel {3478} go? {7971} <8763> I know {3045} <8804> not (3808) (853) the LORD, {3068} neither (1571) (3808) will I let (853) Israel {3478} go. {7971} <8762>

5:3 And they said, {559} <8799> The God {430} of the Hebrews {5680} hath met {7122} <8738> with (5921) us: let us go, [3212] <8799> (1980) we pray thee, (4994) three {7969} days' {3117} journey {1870} into the desert, {4057} and sacrifice {2076} <8799> unto the LORD {3068} our God; {430} lest (6435) he fall [6293] <8799> upon (6293) us with pestilence, {1698} or (176) with the sword. {2719}

5:4 And the king {4428} of Egypt {4714} said {559} <8799> unto (413) them, Wherefore (4100) do ye, Moses {4872} and Aaron, {175} let {6544} <8686> (853) the people {5971} from their works? {4639} (4480) get [3212] <8798> (1980) you unto your burdens. {5450}

5:5 And Pharaoh {6547} said, {559} <8799> Behold, (2005) the people {5971} of the land {776} now (6258) [are] many, {7227} and ye make them rest {7673} <8689> (853) from their burdens. {5450} (4480)

5:6 And Pharaoh {6547} commanded {6680} <8762> the same (1931) day {3117} (853) the taskmasters {5065} <8802> of the people, {5971} and their officers, {7860} <8802> saying, {559} <8800>

5:7 Ye shall no (3808) more {3254} <8686> give {5414} <8800> the people {5971} straw {8401} to make {3835} <8800> brick, {3843} as heretofore: {8032} {8543} let them (1992) go [3212] <8799> (1980) and gather {7197} <8782> straw {8401} for themselves.

5:8 And the tale {4971} of the bricks, {3843} which (834) they (1992) did make {6213} <8802> heretofore, {8032} {8543} ye shall lay {7760} <8799> upon (5921) them; ye shall not (3808) diminish {1639} <8799> [ought] thereof: (4480) for (3588) they (1992) [be] idle; {7503} <8737> therefore (5921) (3651) they (1992) cry, {6817} <8802> saying, {559} <8800> Let us go [3212] <8799> (1980) [and] sacrifice {2076} <8799> to our God. {430}

5:9 Let there more work [5656] be laid {3513} <8799> (5656) upon (5921) the men, [582] (376) that they may labour {6213} <8799> therein; and let them not (408) regard {8159} <8799> vain {8267} words. {1697}

5:10 ¶ And the taskmasters {5065} <8802> of the people {5971} went out, {3318} <8799> and their officers, {7860} <8802> and they spake {559} <8799> to (413) the people, {5971} saying, {559} <8800> Thus (3541) saith {559} <8804> Pharaoh, {6547} I will not (369) give {5414} <8802> you straw. {8401}

5:11 Go [3212] <8798> (1980) ye, (859) get {3947} <8798> you straw {8401} where {834} (4480) ye can find {4672} <8799> it: yet {3588} not (369) ought {1697} of your work {5656} (4480) shall be diminished. {1639} <8737>

5:12 So the people {5971} were scattered abroad {6327} <8686> throughout all (3605) the land {776} of Egypt {4714} to gather {7197} <8780> stubble {7179} instead of straw. {8401}

5:13 And the taskmasters {5065} <8802> hasted {213} <8801> [them], saying, {559} <8800> Fulfil {3615} <8761> your works, {4639} [your] daily {3117} tasks, {1697} as when (834) there was {1961} <8800> straw. {8401}

5:14 And the officers {7860} <8802> of the children {1121} of Israel, {3478} which (834) Pharaoh's {6547} taskmasters {5065} <8802> had set {7760} <8804> over (5921) them, were beaten, {5221} <8714> [and] demanded, {559} <8800> Wherefore (4069) have ye not (3808) fulfilled {3615} <8765> your task {2706} in making brick {3835} <8800> both (1571) yesterday {8543} and (1571) to day, {3117} as heretofore? {8032} {8543}

5:15 ¶ Then the officers {7860} <8802> of the children {1121} of Israel {3478} came {935} <8799> and cried {6817} <8799> unto (413) Pharaoh, {6547} saying, {559} <8800> Wherefore (4100) dealest {6213} <8799> thou thus (3541) with thy servants? {5650}

5:16 There is no (369) straw {8401} given {5414} <8737> unto thy servants, {5650} and they say {559} <8802> to us, Make {6213} <8798> brick: {3843} and, behold, (2009) thy servants {5650} [are] beaten; {5221} <8716> but the fault {2398} <8804> [is] in thine own people. {5971}

5:17 But he said, {559} <8799> Ye (859) [are] idle, {7503} <8737> [ye are] idle: {7503} <8737> therefore (5921) (3651) ye (859) say, {559} <8802> Let us go [3212] <8799> (1980) [and] do sacrifice {2076} <8799> to the LORD. {3068}

5:18 Go [3212] <8798> (1980) therefore now, (6258) [and] work; {5647} <8798> for there shall no (3808) straw {8401} be given {5414} <8735> you, yet shall ye deliver {5414} <8799> the tale {8506} of bricks. {3843}

5:19 And the officers {7860} <8802> of the children {1121} of Israel {3478} did see {7200} <8799> [that] they [were] in evil {7451} [case], after it was said, {559} <8800> Ye shall not (3808) minish {1639} <8799> [ought] from your bricks {3843} (4480) of your daily {3117} task. {1697}

5:20 ¶ And they met {6293} <8799> (853) Moses {4872} and Aaron, {175} who stood {5324} <8737> in the way, {7125} <8800> as they came forth {3318} <8800> from (4480) (854) Pharaoh: {6547}

5:21 And they said {559} <8799> unto (413) them, The LORD {3068} look {7200} <8799> upon (5921) you, and judge; {8199} <8799> because (834) ye have made (853) our savour {7381} to be abhorred {887} <8689> in the eyes {5869} of Pharaoh, {6547} and in the eyes {5869} of his servants, {5650} to put {5414} <8800> a sword {2719} in their hand {3027} to slay {2026} <8800> us.

5:22 And Moses {4872} returned {7725} <8799> unto (413) the LORD, {3068} and said, {559} <8799> Lord, {136} wherefore (4100) hast thou [so] evil entreated {7489} <8689> this (2088) people? {5971} why (4100) [is] it (2088) [that] thou hast sent {7971} <8804> me?

5:23 For since (4480) (227) I came {935} <8804> to (413) Pharaoh {6547} to speak {1696} <8763> in thy name, {8034} he hath done evil {7489} <8689> to this (2088) people; {5971} neither (3808) hast thou delivered {5337} <8689> (853) thy people {5971} at all. {5337} <8687>
