Chapter 16

1  Under the similitude of a wretched infant is shewed the natural state of Jerusalem.  6  God's extraordinary love towards her.  15  Her monstrous whoredom.  35  Her grievous judgment.  44  Her sin, matching her mother, and exceeding her sisters, Sodom and Samaria, calleth for judgments.  60  Mercy is promised her in the end.

16:1 ¶ Again the word {1697} of the LORD {3068} came (1961) unto (413) me, saying, {559} <8800>

16:4 And [as for] thy nativity, {4138} in the day {3117} thou wast born {3205} <8715> thy navel {8270} was not (3808) cut, {3772} <8795> neither (3808) wast thou washed {7364} <8795> in water {4325} to supple {4935} [thee]; thou wast not (3808) salted [4414] <8717> at all, {4414} <8715> nor (3808) swaddled [2853] <8795> at all. {2853} <8715>

16:7 I have caused {5414} <8804> thee to multiply {7233} as the bud {6780} of the field, {7704} and thou hast increased {7235} <8799> and waxen great, {1431} <8799> and thou art come {935} <8799> to excellent {5716} ornaments: {5716} [thy] breasts {7699} are fashioned, {3559} <8738> and thine hair {8181} is grown, {6779} <8765> whereas thou (859) [wast] naked {5903} and bare. {6181}

16:8 Now when I passed {5674} <8799> by (5921) thee, and looked [7200] <8799> upon (7200) thee, behold, (2009) thy time {6256} [was] the time {6256} of love; {1730} and I spread {6566} <8799> my skirt {3671} over (5921) thee, and covered {3680} <8762> thy nakedness: {6172} yea, I sware {7650} <8735> unto thee, and entered {935} <8799> into a covenant {1285} with (854) thee, saith {5002} <8803> the Lord {136} GOD, {3069} and thou becamest (1961) mine.

16:9 Then washed {7364} <8799> I thee with water; {4325} yea, I throughly washed away {7857} <8799> thy blood {1818} from (4480) (5921) thee, and I anointed {5480} <8799> thee with oil. {8081}

16:10 I clothed {3847} <8686> thee also with broidered work, {7553} and shod {5274} <8799> thee with badgers' skin, {8476} and I girded [2280] <8799> thee about (2280) with fine linen, {8336} and I covered {3680} <8762> thee with silk. {4897}

16:11 I decked {5710} <8799> thee also with ornaments, {5716} and I put {5414} <8799> bracelets {6781} upon (5921) thy hands, {3027} and a chain {7242} on (5921) thy neck. {1627}

16:12 And I put {5414} <8799> a jewel {5141} on (5921) thy forehead, {639} and earrings {5694} in (5921) thine ears, {241} and a beautiful {8597} crown {5850} upon thine head. {7218}

16:13 Thus wast thou decked {5710} <8799> with gold {2091} and silver; {3701} and thy raiment {4403} [was of] fine linen, {8336} k8675- and silk, {4897} and broidered work; {7553} thou didst eat {398} <8804> fine flour, {5560} and honey, {1706} and oil: {8081} and thou wast exceeding [3966] beautiful, {3302} {3966} <8799> and thou didst prosper {6743} <8799> into a kingdom. {4410}

16:14 And thy renown {8034} went forth {3318} <8799> among the heathen {1471} for thy beauty: {3308} for (3588) it (1931) [was] perfect {3632} through my comeliness, {1926} which (834) I had put {7760} <8804> upon (5921) thee, saith {5002} <8803> the Lord {136} GOD. {3069}

16:15 ¶ But thou didst trust {982} <8799> in thine own beauty, {3308} and playedst the harlot {2181} <8799> because (5921) of thy renown, {8034} and pouredst out {8210} <8799> (853) thy fornications {8457} on (5921) every one (3605) that passed by; {5674} <8802> his it was. (1961)

16:16 And of thy garments {899} (4480) thou didst take, {3947} <8799> and deckedst {6213} <8799> thy high places {1116} with divers colours, {2921} <8803> and playedst the harlot {2181} <8799> thereupon: (5921) [the like things] shall not (3808) come, {935} <8802> neither (3808) shall it be (1961) [so].

16:17 Thou hast also taken {3947} <8799> thy fair {8597} jewels {3627} of my gold {2091} (4480) and of my silver, {3701} (4480) which (834) I had given {5414} <8804> thee, and madest {6213} <8799> to thyself images {6754} of men, {2145} and didst commit whoredom {2181} <8799> with them,

16:18 And tookest {3947} <8799> thy broidered {7553} (853) garments, {899} and coveredst {3680} <8762> them: and thou hast set {5414} <8804> mine oil {8081} and mine incense {7004} before {6440} them.

16:19 My meat {3899} also which (834) I gave {5414} <8804> thee, fine flour, {5560} and oil, {8081} and honey, {1706} [wherewith] I fed {398} <8689> thee, thou hast even set {5414} <8804> it before {6440} them for a sweet {5207} savour: {7381} and [thus] it was, (1961) saith {5002} <8803> the Lord {136} GOD. {3069}

16:20 Moreover thou hast taken {3947} <8799> (853) thy sons {1121} and thy daughters, {1323} whom (834) thou hast borne {3205} <8804> unto me, and these hast thou sacrificed {2076} <8799> unto them to be devoured. {398} <8800> [Is this] of (4480) thy whoredoms {8457} a small matter, {4592}

16:21 That thou hast slain {7819} <8799> (853) my children, {1121} and delivered {5414} <8799> them to cause them to pass through {5674} <8687> [the fire] for them?

16:22 And in all (3605) thine abominations {8441} and thy whoredoms {8457} thou hast not (3808) remembered {2142} <8804> (853) the days {3117} of thy youth, {5271} when thou wast (1961) naked {5903} and bare, {6181} [and] wast (1961) polluted {947} <8711> in thy blood. {1818}

16:23 And it came to pass (1961) after {310} all (3605) thy wickedness, {7451} (woe, {188} woe {188} unto thee! saith {5002} <8803> the Lord {136} GOD;) {3069}

16:24 [That] thou hast also built {1129} <8799> unto thee an eminent place, {1354} and hast made {6213} <8799> thee an high place {7413} in every (3605) street. {7339}

16:25 Thou hast built {1129} <8804> thy high place {7413} at (413) every (3605) head {7218} of the way, {1870} and hast made (853) thy beauty {3308} to be abhorred, {8581} <8762> and hast opened {6589} <8762> (853) thy feet {7272} to every one (3605) that passed by, {5674} <8802> and multiplied {7235} <8686> (853) thy whoredoms. {8457}

16:26 Thou hast also committed fornication {2181} <8799> with (413) the Egyptians {1121} {4714} thy neighbours, {7934} great {1432} of flesh; {1320} and hast increased {7235} <8686> (853) thy whoredoms, {8457} to provoke me to anger. {3707} <8687>

16:27 Behold, (2009) therefore I have stretched out {5186} <8804> my hand {3027} over (5921) thee, and have diminished {1639} <8799> thine ordinary {2706} [food], and delivered {5414} <8799> thee unto the will {5315} of them that hate {8130} <8802> thee, the daughters {1323} of the Philistines, {6430} which are ashamed {3637} <8737> of thy lewd {2154} way. {1870} (4480)

16:28 Thou hast played the whore {2181} <8799> also with (413) the Assyrians, {1121} {804} because [1115] thou wast unsatiable; [7646] <8804> (4480) (1115) (7654) yea, thou hast played the harlot {2181} <8799> with them, and yet (1571) couldest not (3808) be satisfied. [7654] (7646)

16:29 Thou hast moreover multiplied {7235} <8686> (853) thy fornication {8457} in (413) the land {776} of Canaan {3667} unto Chaldea; {3778} and yet (1571) thou wast not (3808) satisfied {7646} <8804> herewith. {2063}

16:30 How (4100) weak {535} <8802> is thine heart, {3826} saith {5002} <8803> the Lord {136} GOD, {3069} seeing thou doest {6213} <8800> (853) all (3605) these (428) [things], the work {4639} of an imperious {7986} whorish {2181} <8803> woman; {802}

16:31 In that thou buildest {1129} <8800> thine eminent place {1354} in the head {7218} of every (3605) way, {1870} and makest {6213} <8804> thine high place {7413} in every (3605) street; {7339} and hast not (3808) been (1961) as an harlot, {2181} <8802> in that thou scornest {7046} <8763> hire; {868}

16:32 [But as] a wife {802} that committeth adultery, {5003} <8764> [which] taketh {3947} <8799> (853) strangers {2114} <8801> instead (8478) of her husband! {376}

16:33 They give {5414} <8799> gifts {5078} to all (3605) whores: {2181} <8802> but thou (859) givest {5414} <8804> (853) thy gifts {5083} to all (3605) thy lovers, {157} <8764> and hirest {7809} <8799> them, that they may come {935} <8800> unto (413) thee on every side {5439} (4480) for thy whoredom. {8457}

16:34 And the contrary {2016} is (1961) in thee from (4480) [other] women {802} in thy whoredoms, {8457} whereas none (3808) followeth {310} thee to commit whoredoms: {2181} <8795> and in that thou givest {5414} <8800> a reward, {868} and no (3808) reward {868} is given {5414} <8738> unto thee, therefore thou art {1961} <8799> contrary. {2016}

16:35 ¶ Wherefore, (3651) O harlot, {2181} <8802> hear {8085} <8798> the word {1697} of the LORD: {3068}

16:36 Thus (3541) saith {559} <8804> the Lord {136} GOD; {3069} Because (3282) thy filthiness {5178} was poured out, {8210} <8736> and thy nakedness {6172} discovered {1540} <8735> through thy whoredoms {8457} with (5921) thy lovers, {157} <8764> and with (5921) all (3605) the idols {1544} of thy abominations, {8441} and by the blood {1818} of thy children, {1121} which (834) thou didst give {5414} <8804> unto them;

16:37 Behold, (2009) therefore (3651) I will gather {6908} <8764> (853) all (3605) thy lovers, {157} <8764> with (5921) whom (834) thou hast taken pleasure, {6149} <8804> and all (3605) [them] that (834) thou hast loved, {157} <8804> with (5921) all (3605) [them] that (834) thou hast hated; {8130} <8804> I will even gather {6908} <8765> them round about {5439} (4480) against (5921) thee, and will discover {1540} <8765> thy nakedness {6172} unto (413) them, that they may see {7200} <8804> (853) all (3605) thy nakedness. {6172}

16:38 And I will judge {8199} <8804> thee, as women that break wedlock {5003} <8802> and shed {8210} <8802> blood {1818} are judged; {4941} and I will give {5414} <8804> thee blood {1818} in fury {2534} and jealousy. {7068}

16:39 And I will also give {5414} <8804> thee into their hand, {3027} and they shall throw down {2040} <8804> thine eminent place, {1354} and shall break down {5422} <8765> thy high places: {7413} they shall strip {6584} <8689> thee also of thy clothes, {899} and shall take {3947} <8804> thy fair {8597} jewels, {3627} and leave [3240] <8689> (5117) thee naked {5903} and bare. {6181}

16:40 They shall also bring up {5927} <8689> a company {6951} against (5921) thee, and they shall stone {7275} <8804> thee with stones, {68} and thrust thee through {1333} <8765> with their swords. {2719}

16:41 And they shall burn {8313} <8804> thine houses {1004} with fire, {784} and execute {6213} <8804> judgments {8201} upon thee in the sight {5869} of many {7227} women: {802} and I will cause thee to cease {7673} <8689> from playing the harlot, {2181} <8802> (4480) and thou also (1571) shalt give {5414} <8799> no (3808) hire {868} any more. 16:42 So will I make my fury {2534} toward thee to rest, {5117} <8689> and my jealousy {7068} shall depart {5493} <8804> from (4480) thee, and I will be quiet, {8252} <8804> and will be no (3808) more (5750) angry. {3707} <8799>

16:43 Because (3282) (834) thou hast not (3808) remembered {2142} <8804> (853) the days {3117} of thy youth, {5271} but hast fretted {7264} <8799> me in all (3605) these (428) [things]; behold, {1887} therefore I (589) also (1571) will recompense {5414} <8804> thy way {1870} upon [thine] head, {7218} saith {5002} <8803> the Lord {136} GOD: {3069} and thou shalt not (3808) commit {6213} <8804> (853) this lewdness {2154} above (5921) all (3605) thine abominations. {8441}

16:44 ¶ Behold, (2009) every one (3605) that useth proverbs {4911} <8802> shall use [this] proverb {4911} <8799> against (5921) thee, saying, {559} <8800> As [is] the mother, {517} [so is] her daughter. {1323}

16:45 Thou (859) [art] thy mother's {517} daughter, {1323} that lotheth {1602} <8802> her husband {376} and her children; {1121} and thou (859) [art] the sister {269} of thy sisters, {269} which (834) lothed {1602} <8804> their husbands [582] (376) and their children: {1121} your mother {517} [was] an Hittite, [2850] (2851) and your father {1} an Amorite. {567}

16:46 And thine elder {1419} sister {269} [is] Samaria, {8111} she (1931) and her daughters {1323} that dwell {3427} <8802> at (5921) thy left hand: {8040} and thy younger {6996} sister, {269} that dwelleth {3427} <8802> at thy right hand, {3225} (4480) [is] Sodom {5467} and her daughters. {1323}

16:47 Yet hast thou not (3808) walked {1980} <8804> after their ways, {1870} nor done {6213} <8804> after their abominations: {8441} but, as [if that were] a very {6985} little {4592} [6962] <8804> [thing], thou wast corrupted {7843} <8686> more than (4480) they [2004] in all (3605) thy ways. {1870}

16:48 [As] I (589) live, {2416} saith {5002} <8803> the Lord {136} GOD, {3069} Sodom {5467} thy sister {269} hath not (518) done, {6213} <8804> she (1931) nor her daughters, {1323} as (834) thou hast done, {6213} <8804> thou (859) and thy daughters. {1323}

16:49 Behold, (2009) this (2088) was (1961) the iniquity {5771} of thy sister {269} Sodom, {5467} pride, {1347} fulness {7653} of bread, {3899} and abundance {7962} of idleness {8252} <8687> was (1961) in her and in her daughters, {1323} neither (3808) did she strengthen {2388} <8689> the hand {3027} of the poor {6041} and needy. {34}

16:50 And they were haughty, {1361} <8799> and committed {6213} <8799> abomination {8441} before {6440} me: therefore I took them away {5493} <8686> (853) as (834) I saw {7200} <8804> [good].

16:51 Neither (3808) hath Samaria {8111} committed {2398} <8804> half {2677} of thy sins; {2403} but thou hast multiplied {7235} <8686> (853) thine abominations {8441} more than (4480) they, [2007] and hast justified {6663} <8762> (853) thy sisters {269} in all (3605) thine abominations {8441} which (834) thou hast done. {6213} <8804>

16:52 Thou (859) also, (1571) which (834) hast judged {6419} <8765> thy sisters, {269} bear {5375} <8798> thine own shame {3639} for thy sins {2403} that (834) thou hast committed more abominable {8581} <8689> than (4480) they: [2004] they are more righteous {6663} <8799> than (4480) thou: yea, be thou confounded {954} <8798> (859) also, (1571) and bear {5375} <8798> thy shame, {3639} in that thou hast justified {6663} <8763> thy sisters. {269}

16:53 When I shall bring again {7725} <8804> (853) their captivity, {7622} k8675- (853) the captivity {7622} k8675- of Sodom {5467} and her daughters, {1323} and the captivity {7622} q8676- of Samaria {8111} and her daughters, {1323} then [will I bring again] the captivity {7622} k8675- of thy captives {7622} in the midst {8432} of them:

16:54 That (4616) thou mayest bear {5375} <8799> thine own shame, {3639} and mayest be confounded {3637} <8738> in all (4480) (3605) that (834) thou hast done, {6213} <8804> in that thou art a comfort {5162} <8763> unto them.

16:55 When thy sisters, {269} Sodom {5467} and her daughters, {1323} shall return {7725} <8799> to their former estate, {6927} and Samaria {8111} and her daughters {1323} shall return {7725} <8799> to their former estate, {6927} then thou (859) and thy daughters {1323} shall return {7725} <8799> to your former estate. {6927}

16:56 For thy sister {269} Sodom {5467} was (1961) not (3808) mentioned {8052} by thy mouth {6310} in the day {3117} of thy pride, {1347}

16:57 Before (2962) thy wickedness {7451} was discovered, {1540} <8735> as at (3644) the time {6256} of [thy] reproach {2781} of the daughters {1323} of Syria, {758} and all (3605) [that are] round about {5439} her, the daughters {1323} of the Philistines, {6430} which despise {7590} <8801> thee round about. {5439} (4480)

16:58 Thou (859) hast borne {5375} <8804> (853) thy lewdness {2154} and thine abominations, {8441} saith {5002} <8803> the LORD. {3068}

16:59 For (3588) thus (3541) saith {559} <8804> the Lord {136} GOD; {3069} I will even deal {6213} <8804> with (854) thee as (834) thou hast done, {6213} <8804> which (834) hast despised {959} <8804> the oath {423} in breaking {6565} <8687> the covenant. {1285}

16:60 ¶ Nevertheless I (589) will remember {2142} <8804> (853) my covenant {1285} with (854) thee in the days {3117} of thy youth, {5271} and I will establish {6965} <8689> unto thee an everlasting {5769} covenant. {1285}

16:61 Then thou shalt remember {2142} <8804> (853) thy ways, {1870} and be ashamed, {3637} <8738> when thou shalt receive {3947} <8800> (853) thy sisters, {269} thine elder {1419} and thy younger: {6996} and I will give {5414} <8804> them unto thee for daughters, {1323} but not (3808) by thy covenant. {1285} (4480)

16:62 And I (589) will establish {6965} <8689> (853) my covenant {1285} with (854) thee; and thou shalt know {3045} <8804> that (3588) I (589) [am] the LORD: {3068}

16:63 That (4616) thou mayest remember, {2142} <8799> and be confounded, {954} <8804> and never (3808) open {6610} thy mouth {6310} any more (5750) because {6440} (4480) of thy shame, {3639} when I am pacified {3722} <8763> toward thee for all (3605) that (834) thou hast done, {6213} <8804> saith {5002} <8803> the Lord {136} GOD. {3069}
