Chapter 23

1  The age and death of Sarah.  3  The purchase of Machpelah,  19  where Sarah was buried.

23:1 ¶ And Sarah {8283} was (1961) an hundred {3967} [8141] and seven {7651} [8141] and twenty {6242} years {8141} old: {2416} [these were] the years {8141} of the life {2416} of Sarah. {8283}

23:2 And Sarah {8283} died {4191} <8799> in Kirjatharba; {7153} the same (1931) [is] Hebron {2275} in the land {776} of Canaan: {3667} and Abraham {85} came {935} <8799> to mourn {5594} <8800> for Sarah, {8283} and to weep {1058} <8800> for her.

23:3 ¶ And Abraham {85} stood up {6965} <8799> from before {6440} (4480) (5921) his dead, {4191} <8801> and spake {1696} <8762> unto (413) the sons {1121} of Heth, {2845} saying, {559} <8800>

23:4 I (595) [am] a stranger {1616} and a sojourner {8453} with (5973) you: give {5414} <8798> me a possession {272} of a buryingplace {6913} with (5973) you, that I may bury {6912} <8799> my dead {4191} <8801> out of my sight. {6440} (4480)

23:5 And the children {1121} of Heth {2845} answered {6030} <8799> (853) Abraham, {85} saying {559} <8800> unto him,

23:6 Hear (8085) us, [8085] <8798> my lord: {113} thou (859) [art] a mighty {430} prince {5387} among (8432) us: [8432] in the choice {4005} of our sepulchres {6913} bury {6912} <8798> (853) thy dead; {4191} <8801> none {3808} {376} of (4480) us shall withhold {3607} <8799> from (4480) thee (853) his sepulchre, {6913} but that thou mayest bury {6912} <8800> (4480) thy dead. {4191} <8801>

23:7 And Abraham {85} stood up, {6965} <8799> and bowed [7812] <8691> himself (7812) to the people {5971} of the land, {776} [even] to the children {1121} of Heth. {2845}

23:8 And he communed {1696} <8762> with (854) them, saying, {559} <8800> If (518) it be {3426} (853) your mind {5315} that I should bury {6912} <8800> (853) my dead {4191} <8801> out of my sight; {6440} (4480) hear {8085} <8798> me, and intreat {6293} <8798> for me to Ephron {6085} the son {1121} of Zohar, {6714}

23:9 That he may give {5414} <8799> me (853) the cave {4631} of Machpelah, {4375} which (834) he hath, which (834) [is] in the end {7097} of his field; {7704} for as much [4392] <0> money {3701} as it is worth {4392} he shall give (5414) it [5414] <8799> me for a possession {272} of a buryingplace {6913} amongst (8432) you. [8432]

23:10 And Ephron {6085} dwelt {3427} <8802> among {8432} the children {1121} of Heth: {2845} and Ephron {6085} the Hittite {2850} answered {6030} <8799> (853) Abraham {85} in the audience {241} of the children {1121} of Heth, {2845} [even] of all (3605) that went in {935} <8802> at the gate {8179} of his city, {5892} saying, {559} <8800>

23:11 Nay, {3808} my lord, {113} hear (8085) me: [8085] <8798> the field {7704} give (5414) I [5414] <8804> thee, and the cave {4631} that (834) [is] therein, I give (5414) it [5414] <8804> thee; in the presence {5869} of the sons {1121} of my people {5971} give {5414} <8804> I it thee: bury {6912} <8798> thy dead. {4191} <8801>

23:12 And Abraham {85} bowed down [7812] <8691> himself (7812) before {6440} the people {5971} of the land. {776}

23:13 And he spake {1696} <8762> unto (413) Ephron {6085} in the audience {241} of the people {5971} of the land, {776} saying, {559} <8800> But (389) if (518) thou (859) [wilt give it], I pray thee, {3863} hear {8085} <8798> me: I will give {5414} <8804> thee money {3701} for the field; {7704} take {3947} <8798> [it] of (4480) me, and I will bury {6912} <8799> (853) my dead {4191} <8801> there. (8033)

23:14 And Ephron {6085} answered {6030} <8799> (853) Abraham, {85} saying {559} <8800> unto him,

23:15 My lord, {113} hearken {8085} <8798> unto me: the land {776} [is worth] four {702} hundred {3967} shekels {8255} of silver; {3701} what (4100) [is] that (1931) betwixt {996} me and thee? bury {6912} <8798> therefore thy dead. {4191} <8801>

23:16 And Abraham {85} hearkened {8085} <8799> unto (413) Ephron; {6085} and Abraham {85} weighed {8254} <8799> to Ephron {6085} (853) the silver, {3701} which (834) he had named {1696} <8765> in the audience {241} of the sons {1121} of Heth, {2845} four {702} hundred {3967} shekels {8255} of silver, {3701} current {5674} <8802> [money] with the merchant. {5503} <8802>

23:17 ¶ And the field {7704} of Ephron, {6085} which (834) [was] in Machpelah, {4375} which (834) [was] before {6440} Mamre, {4471} the field, {7704} and the cave {4631} which (834) [was] therein, and all (3605) the trees {6086} that (834) [were] in the field, {7704} that (834) [were] in all (3605) the borders {1366} round about, {5439} were made sure {6965} <8799>

23:18 Unto Abraham {85} for a possession {4736} in the presence {5869} of the children {1121} of Heth, {2845} before all (3605) that went in {935} <8802> at the gate {8179} of his city. {5892}

23:19 And after {310} this, {3651} Abraham {85} buried {6912} <8804> (853) Sarah {8283} his wife {802} in (413) the cave {4631} of the field {7704} of Machpelah {4375} before {6440} (5921) Mamre: {4471} the same (1931) [is] Hebron {2275} in the land {776} of Canaan. {3667}

23:20 And the field, {7704} and the cave {4631} that (834) [is] therein, were made sure {6965} <8799> unto Abraham {85} for a possession {272} of a buryingplace {6913} by (4480) (854) the sons {1121} of Heth. {2845}
