Chapter 39

1  Joseph advanceth in Potiphar's house.  7  He resisteth his mistress's temptation.  13  He is falsely accused.  20  He is cast in prison.  21  God is with him there.

39:1 ¶ And Joseph {3130} was brought down {3381} <8717> to Egypt; {4714} and Potiphar, {6318} an officer {5631} of Pharaoh, {6547} captain {8269} of the guard, {2876} an Egyptian, {376} {4713} bought {7069} <8799> him of the hands {3027} (4480) of the Ishmeelites, {3459} which (834) had brought him down {3381} <8689> thither. (8033)

39:2 And the LORD {3068} was (1961) with (854) Joseph, {3130} and he was (1961) a prosperous {6743} <8688> man; {376} and he was (1961) in the house {1004} of his master {113} the Egyptian. {4713}

39:3 And his master {113} saw {7200} <8799> that (3588) the LORD {3068} [was] with (854) him, and that the LORD {3068} made all (3605) that (834) he (1931) did {6213} <8802> to prosper {6743} <8688> in his hand. {3027}

39:4 And Joseph {3130} found {4672} <8799> grace {2580} in his sight, {5869} and he served {8334} <8762> him: and he made him overseer {6485} <8686> over (5921) his house, {1004} and all (3605) [that] he had {3426} he put {5414} <8804> into his hand. {3027}

39:5 And it came to pass (1961) from the time {227} (4480) [that] he had made him overseer {6485} <8689> (853) in his house, {1004} and over (5921) all (3605) that (834) he had, {3426} that the LORD {3068} blessed {1288} <8762> (853) the Egyptian's {4713} house {1004} for Joseph's [3130] sake; {1558} (3130) and the blessing {1293} of the LORD {3068} was (1961) upon all (3605) that (834) he had {3426} in the house, {1004} and in the field. {7704}

39:6 And he left {5800} <8799> all (3605) that (834) he had in Joseph's {3130} hand; {3027} and he knew {3045} <8804> not (3808) ought {3972} he had, (854) save {518} (3588) the bread {3899} which (834) he (1931) did eat. {398} <8802> And Joseph {3130} was (1961) [a] goodly {8389} (3303) [person], and well {3303} favoured. {4758}

39:7 ¶ And it came to pass (1961) after {310} these (428) things, {1697} that his master's {113} wife {802} cast {5375} <8799> (853) her eyes {5869} upon (413) Joseph; {3130} and she said, {559} <8799> Lie {7901} <8798> with (5973) me.

39:8 But he refused, {3985} <8762> and said {559} <8799> unto (413) his master's {113} wife, {802} Behold, (2005) my master {113} wotteth {3045} <8804> not (3808) what (4100) [is] with (854) me in the house, {1004} and he hath committed {5414} <8804> all (3605) that (834) he hath {3426} to my hand; {3027}

39:9 [There is] none (369) greater {1419} in this (2088) house {1004} than (4480) I; neither {3808} hath he kept back {2820} <8804> any thing {3972} from (4480) me but (3588) (518) thee, because {834} thou {859} [art] his wife: {802} how (349) then can I do {6213} <8799> this (2063) great {1419} wickedness, {7451} and sin {2398} <8804> against God? {430}

39:10 And it came to pass, (1961) as she spake {1696} <8763> to (413) Joseph {3130} day {3117} by day, {3117} that he hearkened {8085} <8804> not (3808) unto (413) her, to lie {7901} <8800> by (681) her, [681] [or] to be (1961) with (5973) her.

39:11 And it came to pass (1961) about this (2088) time, {3117} that [Joseph] went {935} <8799> into the house {1004} to do {6213} <8800> his business; {4399} and [there was] none (369) (376) of the men {376} [582] (4480) of the house {1004} there (8033) within. (1004)

39:12 And she caught {8610} <8799> him by his garment, {899} saying, {559} <8800> Lie {7901} <8798> with (5973) me: and he left {5800} <8799> his garment {899} in her hand, {3027} and fled, {5127} <8799> and got {3318} <8799> him out. {2351}

39:13 And it came to pass, (1961) when she saw {7200} <8800> that (3588) he had left {5800} <8804> his garment {899} in her hand, {3027} and was fled {5127} <8799> forth, {2351}

39:14 That she called {7121} <8799> unto the men [582] (376) of her house, {1004} and spake {559} <8799> unto them, saying, {559} <8800> See, {7200} <8798> he hath brought in {935} <8689> an Hebrew {376} {5680} unto us to mock {6711} <8763> us; he came in {935} <8804> unto (413) me to lie {7901} <8800> with (5973) me, and I cried {7121} <8799> with a loud {1419} voice: {6963}

39:15 And it came to pass, (1961) when he heard {8085} <8800> that (3588) I lifted up {7311} <8689> my voice {6963} and cried, {7121} <8799> that he left {5800} <8799> his garment {899} with (681) me, [681] and fled, {5127} <8799> and got (3318) him [3318] <8799> out. {2351}

39:16 And she laid up [3240] <8686> (5117) his garment {899} by (681) her, [681] until (5704) his lord {113} came {935} <8800> (413) home. {1004}

39:17 And she spake {1696} <8762> unto (413) him according to these (428) words, {1697} saying, {559} <8800> The Hebrew {5680} servant, {5650} which (834) thou hast brought {935} <8689> unto us, came in {935} <8804> unto (413) me to mock {6711} <8763> me:

39:18 And it came to pass, (1961) as I lifted up {7311} <8687> my voice {6963} and cried, {7121} <8799> that he left {5800} <8799> his garment {899} with (681) me, [681] and fled {5127} <8799> out. {2351}

39:19 And it came to pass, (1961) when his master {113} heard {8085} <8800> (853) the words {1697} of his wife, {802} which (834) she spake {1696} <8765> unto (413) him, saying, {559} <8800> After this (428) manner {1697} did {6213} <8804> thy servant {5650} to me; that his wrath {639} was kindled. {2734} <8799>

39:20 And Joseph's {3130} master {113} took {3947} <8799> him, and put (5414) him [5414] <8799> into (413) the prison, {1004} {5470} a place {4725} where (834) the king's {4428} prisoners {615} [were] bound: {631} <8803> and he was (1961) there (8033) in the prison. {1004} {5470}

39:21 ¶ But the LORD {3068} was (1961) with (854) Joseph, {3130} and shewed {5186} <8799> (413) him mercy, {2617} and gave {5414} <8799> him favour {2580} in the sight {5869} of the keeper {8269} of the prison. {1004} {5470}

39:22 And the keeper {8269} of the prison {1004} {5470} committed {5414} <8799> to Joseph's {3130} hand {3027} (853) all (3605) the prisoners {615} that (834) [were] in the prison; {1004} {5470} and whatsoever (3605) (834) they did {6213} <8802> there, (8033) he (1931) was (1961) the doer {6213} <8802> [of it].

39:23 The keeper {8269} of the prison {1004} {5470} looked {7200} <8802> not (369) to (853) any thing {3972} (3605) [that was] under his hand; {3027} because (834) the LORD {3068} was with (854) him, and [that] which (834) he (1931) did, {6213} <8802> the LORD {3068} made [it] to prosper. {6743} <8688>
