Chapter 16

1  Sarai, being barren, giveth Hagar to Abram.  6  Hagar, being afflicted for despising her mistress, runneth away.  7  An angel sendeth her back to submit herself,  11  and telleth her of her child.  15  Ishmael is born.

16:1 ¶ Now Sarai {8297} Abram's {87} wife {802} bare [3205] <0> him no [3808] children: {3205} <8804> (3808) and she had an handmaid, {8198} an Egyptian, {4713} whose name {8034} [was] Hagar. {1904}

16:2 And Sarai {8297} said {559} <8799> unto (413) Abram, {87} Behold (2009) now, (4994) the LORD {3068} hath restrained (6113) me [6113] <8804> from bearing: {3205} <8800> (4480) I pray thee, (4994) go in {935} <8798> unto (413) my maid; {8198} it may [194] be (194) that I may obtain children {1129} <8735> by (4480) her. And Abram {87} hearkened {8085} <8799> to the voice {6963} of Sarai. {8297}

16:3 And Sarai {8297} Abram's {87} wife {802} took {3947} <8799> (853) Hagar {1904} her maid {8198} the Egyptian, {4713} after {7093} (4480) Abram {87} had dwelt {3427} <8800> ten {6235} years {8141} in the land {776} of Canaan, {3667} and gave {5414} <8799> her to her husband {376} Abram {87} to be his wife. {802}

16:4 ¶ And he went in {935} <8799> unto (413) Hagar, {1904} and she conceived: {2029} <8799> and when she saw {7200} <8799> that (3588) she had conceived, {2029} <8804> her mistress {1404} was despised {7043} <8799> in her eyes. {5869}

16:5 And Sarai {8297} said {559} <8799> unto (413) Abram, {87} My wrong {2555} [be] upon (5921) thee: I (595) have given {5414} <8804> my maid {8198} into thy bosom; {2436} and when she saw {7200} <8799> that (3588) she had conceived, {2029} <8804> I was despised {7043} <8799> in her eyes: {5869} the LORD {3068} judge {8199} <8799> between (996) me and thee.

16:6 But Abram {87} said {559} <8799> unto (413) Sarai, {8297} Behold, (2009) thy maid {8198} [is] in thy hand; {3027} do {6213} <8798> to her as it pleaseth (2896) (5869) thee. [2896] [5869] And when Sarai {8297} dealt hardly (6031) with [6031] <8762> her, she fled {1272} <8799> from her face. {6440} (4480)

16:7 ¶ And the angel {4397} of the LORD {3068} found (4672) her [4672] <8799> by (5921) a fountain {5869} of water {4325} in the wilderness, {4057} by (5921) the fountain {5869} in the way {1870} to Shur. {7793}

16:8 And he said, {559} <8799> Hagar, {1904} Sarai's {8297} maid, {8198} whence {335} (4480) (2088) camest (935) thou? [935] <8804> and whither (575) wilt thou go? [3212] <8799> (1980) And she said, {559} <8799> I (595) flee {1272} <8802> from the face {6440} (4480) of my mistress {1404} Sarai. {8297}

16:9 And the angel {4397} of the LORD {3068} said {559} <8799> unto her, Return {7725} <8798> to (413) thy mistress, {1404} and submit [6031] <8690> thyself (6031) under (8478) her hands. {3027}

16:10 And the angel {4397} of the LORD {3068} said {559} <8799> unto her, I will multiply [7235] <8686> thy seed [2233] exceedingly, {7235} <8687> (853) (2233) that it shall not (3808) be numbered {5608} <8735> for multitude. {7230} (4480)

16:11 And the angel {4397} of the LORD {3068} said {559} <8799> unto her, Behold, {2009} thou [art] with child, {2030} and shalt bear {3205} <8802> a son, {1121} and shalt call {7121} <8804> his name {8034} Ishmael; {3458} because (3588) the LORD {3068} hath heard {8085} <8804> (413) thy affliction. {6040}

16:12 And he (1931) will be (1961) a wild {6501} man; {120} his hand {3027} [will be] against every man, (3605) and every man's (3605) hand {3027} against him; and he shall dwell {7931} <8799> in the presence {6440} (5921) of all (3605) his brethren. {251}

16:13 And she called {7121} <8799> the name {8034} of the LORD {3068} that spake {1696} <8802> unto (413) her, Thou (859) God {410} seest (7210) me: [7210] for (3588) she said, {559} <8804> Have I also (1571) here {1988} looked {7200} <8804> after (310) him [310] that seeth (7200) me? [7210]

16:14 Wherefore (5921) (3651) the well {875} was called {7121} <8804> Beerlahairoi; {883} [2416] behold, (2009) [it is] between (996) Kadesh {6946} and Bered. {1260}

16:15 ¶ And Hagar {1904} bare {3205} <8799> Abram {87} a son: {1121} and Abram {87} called {7121} <8799> his son's {1121} name, {8034} which (834) Hagar {1904} bare, {3205} <8804> Ishmael. {3458}

16:16 And Abram {87} [was] fourscore {8084} [8141] and six {8337} years {8141} old, {1121} when Hagar {1904} bare {3205} <8800> (853) Ishmael {3458} to Abram. {87}
