Chapter 18

1  Abraham entertaineth three angels.  9  Sarah is reproved for laughing at the strange promise.  17  The destruction of Sodom is revealed to Abraham.  23  Abraham maketh intercession for the men thereof.

18:1 ¶ And the LORD {3068} appeared {7200} <8735> unto (413) him in the plains {436} of Mamre: {4471} and he (1931) sat {3427} <8802> in the tent {168} door {6607} in the heat {2527} of the day; {3117}

18:2 And he lift up {5375} <8799> his eyes {5869} and looked, {7200} <8799> and, lo, (2009) three {7969} men [582] (376) stood {5324} <8737> by (5921) him: and when he saw {7200} <8799> [them], he ran {7323} <8799> to meet {7125} <8800> them from the tent [168] door, {6607} (4480) (168) and bowed [7812] <8691> himself (7812) toward the ground, {776}

18:3 And said, {559} <8799> My Lord, {136} if (518) now (4994) I have found {4672} <8804> favour {2580} in thy sight, {5869} pass not away, {5674} <8799> (408) I pray thee, (4994) from (4480) (5921) thy servant: {5650}

18:4 Let a little {4592} water, {4325} I pray you, {4994} be fetched, {3947} <8714> and wash {7364} <8798> your feet, {7272} and rest yourselves {8172} <8734> under (8478) the tree: {6086}

18:5 And I will fetch {3947} <8799> a morsel {6595} of bread, {3899} and comfort (5582) ye [5582] <8798> your hearts; {3820} after that {310} ye shall pass on: {5674} <8799> for (3588) therefore (5921) (3651) are ye come {5674} <8804> to {5921} your servant. {5650} And they said, [1696] <8765> (559) So (3651) do, {6213} <8799> as (834) thou hast said. 18:6 And Abraham {85} hastened {4116} <8762> into the tent {168} unto (413) Sarah, {8283} and said, {559} <8799> Make ready quickly {4116} <8761> three {7969} measures {5429} of fine {5560} meal, {7058} knead {3888} <8798> [it], and make {6213} <0> cakes [5692] upon the hearth. [6213] <8798> (5692)

18:7 And Abraham {85} ran {7323} <8804> unto (413) the herd, {1241} and fetcht {3947} <8799> a calf {1121} {1241} tender {7390} and good, {2896} and gave {5414} <8799> [it] unto (413) a young man; {5288} and he hasted {4116} <8762> to dress {6213} <8800> it.

18:8 And he took {3947} <8799> butter, {2529} and milk, {2461} and the calf {1121} {1241} which (834) he had dressed, {6213} <8804> and set {5414} <8799> [it] before (6440) them; [6440] and he (1931) stood {5975} <8802> by (5921) them under (8478) the tree, {6086} and they did eat. {398} <8799>

18:9 ¶ And they said {559} <8799> unto (413) him, Where {346} [is] Sarah {8283} thy wife? {802} And he said, {559} <8799> Behold, (2009) in the tent. {168}

18:10 And he said, {559} <8799> I will certainly [7725] <8800> return {7725} <8799> unto (413) thee according to the time {6256} of life; {2416} and, lo, (2009) Sarah {8283} thy wife {802} shall have a son. {1121} And Sarah {8283} heard {8085} <8802> [it] in the tent {168} door, {6607} which (1931) [was] behind (310) him. [310]

18:11 Now Abraham {85} and Sarah {8283} [were] old {2205} [and] well stricken {935} <8802> in age; {3117} [and] it ceased {2308} <8804> to be (1961) with Sarah {8283} after the manner {734} of women. {802}

18:12 Therefore Sarah {8283} laughed {6711} <8799> within (7130) herself, [7130] saying, {559} <8800> After {310} I am waxed old {1086} <8800> shall I have (1961) pleasure, {5730} my lord {113} being old (2204) also? [2204] <8804>

18:13 And the LORD {3068} said {559} <8799> unto (413) Abraham, {85} Wherefore {4100} (2088) did Sarah {8283} laugh, {6711} <8804> saying, {559} <8800> Shall I of a surety {552} (637) bear [3205] <8799> a child, (3205) which {589} am old? {2204} <8804>

18:14 Is [6381] <0> any thing {1697} too hard {6381} <8735> for the LORD? {3068} (4480) At the time appointed {4150} I will return {7725} <8799> unto (413) thee, according to the time {6256} of life, {2416} and Sarah {8283} shall have a son. {1121}

18:15 Then Sarah {8283} denied, {3584} <8762> saying, {559} <8800> I laughed {6711} <8804> not; (3808) for (3588) she was afraid. {3372} <8804> And he said, {559} <8799> Nay; {3808} but (3588) thou didst laugh. {6711} <8804>

18:16 ¶ And the men [582] (376) rose up {6965} <8799> from thence, (4480) (8033) and looked {8259} <8686> toward {6440} (5921) Sodom: {5467} and Abraham {85} went {1980} <8802> with (5973) them to bring them on the way. {7971} <8763>

18:17 And the LORD {3068} said, {559} <8804> Shall I (589) hide {3680} <8764> from Abraham {85} (4480) that thing which {834} I (589) do; {6213} <8802>

18:18 Seeing that Abraham {85} shall surely become {1961} a great {1419} and mighty {6099} nation, {1471} and all (3605) the nations {1471} of the earth {776} shall be blessed {1288} <8738> in him?

18:19 For (3588) I know {3045} <8804> him, that {834} (4616) he will command {6680} <8762> (853) his children {1121} and his household {1004} after (310) him, [310] and they shall keep {8104} <8804> the way {1870} of the LORD, {3068} to do {6213} <8800> justice {6666} and judgment; {4941} that (4616) the LORD {3068} may bring {935} <8687> upon (5921) Abraham {85} (853) that which (834) he hath spoken {1696} <8765> of (5921) him.

18:20 And the LORD {3068} said, {559} <8799> Because (3588) the cry {2201} of Sodom {5467} and Gomorrah {6017} is great, [7227] (7231) and because (3588) their sin {2403} is very {3966} grievous; {3513} <8804>

18:21 I will go down {3381} <8799> now, (4994) and see {7200} <8799> whether they have done {6213} <8804> altogether {3617} according to the cry {6818} of it, which is come {935} <8802> unto (413) me; and if (518) not, (3808) I will know. {3045} <8799>

18:22 And the men [582] (376) turned their faces {6437} <8799> from thence, (4480) (8033) and went [3212] <8799> (1980) toward Sodom: {5467} but Abraham {85} stood {5975} <8802> yet {5750} before {6440} the LORD. {3068}

18:23 ¶ And Abraham {85} drew near, {5066} <8799> and said, {559} <8799> Wilt thou also (637) destroy {5595} <8799> the righteous {6662} with {5973} the wicked? {7563}

18:24 Peradventure (194) there be {3426} fifty {2572} righteous {6662} within {8432} the city: {5892} wilt thou also (637) destroy {5595} <8799> and not (3808) spare {5375} <8799> the place {4725} for {4616} the fifty {2572} righteous {6662} that (834) [are] therein? {7130}

18:25 That be far {2486} from thee to do {6213} <8800> (4480) after this (2088) manner, {1697} to slay {4191} <8687> the righteous {6662} with (5973) the wicked: {7563} and that the righteous {6662} should be (1961) as the wicked, {7563} that be far {2486} from thee: Shall not (3808) the Judge {8199} <8802> of all (3605) the earth {776} do {6213} <8799> right? {4941}

18:26 And the LORD {3068} said, {559} <8799> If (518) I find {4672} <8799> in Sodom {5467} fifty {2572} righteous {6662} within {8432} the city, {5892} then I will spare {5375} <8804> all (3605) the place {4725} for their sakes. (5668)

18:27 And Abraham {85} answered {6030} <8799> and said, {559} <8799> Behold (2009) now, (4994) I have taken upon (2974) me [2974] <8689> to speak {1696} <8763> unto (413) the Lord, {136} which {595} [am but] dust {6083} and ashes: {665}

18:28 Peradventure (194) there shall lack {2637} <8799> five {2568} of the fifty {2572} righteous: {6662} wilt thou destroy {7843} <8686> (853) all (3605) the city {5892} for [lack of] five? {2568} And he said, {559} <8799> If (518) I find {4672} <8799> there (8033) forty {705} and five, {2568} I will not (3808) destroy {7843} <8686> [it].

18:29 And he spake {1696} <8763> unto (413) him yet (5750) again, {3254} <8686> and said, {559} <8799> Peradventure (194) there shall be forty {705} found {4672} <8735> there. (8033) And he said, {559} <8799> I will not (3808) do {6213} <8799> [it] for forty's [705] sake. (5668) (705)

18:30 And he said {559} <8799> [unto him], Oh {4994} let not (408) the Lord {136} be angry, {2734} <8799> and I will speak: {1696} <8762> Peradventure (194) there shall thirty {7970} be found {4672} <8735> there. (8033) And he said, {559} <8799> I will not (3808) do {6213} <8799> [it], if (518) I find {4672} <8799> thirty {7970} there. (8033)

18:31 And he said, {559} <8799> Behold (2009) now, (4994) I have taken upon (2974) me [2974] <8689> to speak {1696} <8763> unto (413) the Lord: {136} Peradventure (194) there shall be twenty {6242} found {4672} <8735> there. (8033) And he said, {559} <8799> I will not (3808) destroy {7843} <8686> [it] for twenty's [6242] sake. (5668) (6242)

18:32 And he said, {559} <8799> Oh (4994) let not (408) the Lord {136} be angry, {2734} <8799> and I will speak {1696} <8762> yet {389} but this once: {6471} Peradventure (194) ten {6235} shall be found {4672} <8735> there. (8033) And he said, {559} <8799> I will not (3808) destroy {7843} <8686> [it] for ten's [6235] sake. (5668) (6235)

18:33 And the LORD {3068} went his way, [3212] <8799> (1980) as soon as {834} he had left {3615} <8765> communing {1696} <8763> with (413) Abraham: {85} and Abraham {85} returned {7725} <8804> unto his place. {4725}
