Chapter 3

1  The serpent deceiveth Eve.  6  Man's shameful fall,  9  God arraigneth them.  14  The serpent is cursed.  15  The promised seed.  16  The punishment of mankind.  21  Their first clothing.  22  Their casting out of paradise.

3:1 ¶ Now the serpent {5175} was {1961} <8804> more subtil {6175} than any (4480) (3605) beast {2416} of the field {7704} which (834) the LORD {3068} God {430} had made. {6213} <8804> And he said {559} <8799> unto (413) the woman, {802} Yea, {637} (3588) hath God {430} said, {559} <8804> Ye shall not (3808) eat {398} <8799> of every (4480) (3605) tree {6086} of the garden? {1588}

3:2 And the woman {802} said {559} <8799> unto (413) the serpent, {5175} We may eat {398} <8799> of the fruit {6529} (4480) of the trees {6086} of the garden: {1588}

3:3 But of the fruit {6529} (4480) of the tree {6086} which (834) [is] in the midst {8432} of the garden, {1588} God {430} hath said, {559} <8804> Ye shall not (3808) eat {398} <8799> of (4480) it, neither (3808) shall ye touch {5060} <8799> it, lest {6435} ye die. {4191} <8799>

3:4 And the serpent {5175} said {559} <8799> unto (413) the woman, {802} Ye shall not (3808) surely [4191] <8800> die: {4191} <8799>

3:5 For (3588) God {430} doth know {3045} <8802> that (3588) in the day {3117} ye eat {398} <8800> thereof, (4480) then your eyes {5869} shall be opened, {6491} <8738> and ye shall be (1961) as gods, {430} knowing {3045} <8802> good {2896} and evil. {7451}

3:6 And when the woman {802} saw {7200} <8799> that (3588) the tree {6086} [was] good {2896} for food, {3978} and that (3588) it {1931} [was] pleasant {8378} to the eyes, {5869} and a tree {6086} to be desired {2530} <8737> to make [one] wise, {7919} <8687> she took {3947} <8799> of the fruit (4480) (6529) thereof, [6529] and did eat, {398} <8799> and gave {5414} <8799> also {1571} unto her husband {376} with (5973) her; and he did eat. {398} <8799>

3:7 And the eyes {5869} of them both {8147} were opened, {6491} <8735> and they [1992] knew {3045} <8799> that (3588) they (1992) [were] naked; {5903} and they sewed {8609} <0> fig {8384} leaves {5929} together, [8609] <8799> and made (6213) themselves [6213] <8799> aprons. {2290}

3:8 And they heard {8085} <8799> (853) the voice {6963} of the LORD {3068} God {430} walking {1980} <8693> in the garden {1588} in the cool {7307} of the day: {3117} and Adam [120] (121) and his wife {802} hid themselves {2244} <8691> from the presence {6440} (4480) of the LORD {3068} God {430} amongst {8432} the trees {6086} of the garden. {1588}

3:9 And the LORD {3068} God {430} called {7121} <8799> unto (413) Adam, [120] (121) and said {559} <8799> unto him, Where (335) [art] thou? [335]

3:10 And he said, {559} <8799> I heard {8085} <8804> (853) thy voice {6963} in the garden, {1588} and I was afraid, {3372} <8799> because (3588) I {595} [was] naked; {5903} and I hid myself. {2244} <8735>

3:11 And he said, {559} <8799> Who {4310} told {5046} <8689> thee that (3588) thou (859) [wast] naked? {5903} Hast thou eaten {398} <8804> of (4480) the tree, {6086} whereof (834) (4480) I commanded (6680) thee [6680] <8765> that thou shouldest not {1115} eat? {398} <8800>

3:12 And the man {120} said, {559} <8799> The woman {802} whom (834) thou gavest {5414} <8804> [to be] with (5973) me, [5978] she {1931} gave {5414} <8804> me of (4480) the tree, {6086} and I did eat. {398} <8799>

3:13 And the LORD {3068} God {430} said {559} <8799> unto the woman, {802} What (4100) [is] this (2063) [that] thou hast done? {6213} <8804> And the woman {802} said, {559} <8799> The serpent {5175} beguiled (5377) me, [5377] <8689> and I did eat. {398} <8799>

3:14 And the LORD {3068} God {430} said {559} <8799> unto (413) the serpent, {5175} Because (3588) thou [859] hast done {6213} <8804> this, (2063) thou (859) [art] cursed {779} <8803> above all (4480) (3605) cattle, {929} and above every (4480) (3605) beast {2416} of the field; {7704} upon (5921) thy belly {1512} shalt thou go, [3212] <8799> (1980) and dust {6083} shalt thou eat {398} <8799> all (3605) the days {3117} of thy life: {2416}

3:15 And I will put {7896} <8799> enmity {342} between (996) thee and the woman, {802} and between (996) thy seed {2233} and her seed; {2233} it (1931) shall bruise {7779} <8799> thy head, {7218} and thou (859) shalt bruise {7779} <8799> his heel. {6119}

3:16 Unto (413) the woman {802} he said, {559} <8804> I will greatly {7235} <8687> multiply {7235} <8686> thy sorrow {6093} and thy conception; {2032} in sorrow {6089} thou shalt bring forth {3205} <8799> children; {1121} and thy desire {8669} [shall be] to (413) thy husband, {376} and he (1931) shall rule {4910} <8799> over thee.

3:17 And unto Adam {121} he said, {559} <8804> Because (3588) thou hast hearkened {8085} <8804> unto the voice {6963} of thy wife, {802} and hast eaten {398} <8799> of (4480) the tree, {6086} of which {834} I commanded (6680) thee, [6680] <8765> saying, {559} <8800> Thou shalt not (3808) eat {398} <8799> of (4480) it: cursed {779} <8803> [is] the ground {127} for thy sake; (5668) in sorrow {6093} shalt thou eat {398} <8799> [of] it all {3605} the days {3117} of thy life; {2416}

3:18 Thorns (6975) also [6975] and thistles {1863} shall it bring forth {6779} <8686> to thee; and thou shalt eat {398} <8804> (853) the herb {6212} of the field; {7704}

3:19 In the sweat {2188} of thy face {639} shalt thou eat {398} <8799> bread, {3899} till {5704} thou return {7725} <8800> unto (413) the ground; {127} for (3588) out of (4480) it wast thou taken: {3947} <8795> for (3588) dust {6083} thou {859} [art], and unto (413) dust {6083} shalt thou return. {7725} <8799>

3:20 And Adam [120] (121) called {7121} <8799> his wife's {802} name {8034} Eve; {2332} because (3588) she (1931) was (1961) the mother {517} of all (3605) living. {2416}

3:21 Unto Adam [120] (121) also and to his wife {802} did the LORD {3068} God {430} make {6213} <8799> coats {3801} of skins, {5785} and clothed (3847) them. [3847] <8686>

3:22 ¶ And the LORD {3068} God {430} said, {559} <8799> Behold, {2005} the man {120} is become (1961) as one {259} of (4480) us, to know {3045} <8800> good {2896} and evil: {7451} and now, (6258) lest (6435) he put forth {7971} <8799> his hand, {3027} and take {3947} <8804> also (1571) of the tree {6086} (4480) of life, {2416} and eat, {398} <8804> and live {2425} <8804> for ever: {5769}

3:23 Therefore the LORD {3068} God {430} sent him forth {7971} <8762> from the garden {1588} (4480) of Eden, {5731} to till {5647} <8800> (853) the ground {127} from whence (4480) (8033) (834) he was taken. {3947} <8795>

3:24 So he drove out {1644} <8762> (853) the man; {120} and he placed {7931} <8686> at the east {6924} (4480) of the garden {1588} of Eden {5731} (853) Cherubims, {3742} and a flaming {3858} sword {2719} which turned every way, {2015} <8693> to keep {8104} <8800> (853) the way {1870} of the tree {6086} of life. {2416}
