Chapter 32

1  Jacob's vision at Mahanaim.  3  His message to Esau.  6  He is afraid of Esau's coming.  9  He prayeth for deliverance.  13  He sendeth a present to Esau.  24  He wrestleth with an angel at Peniel, where he is called Israel.  31  He halteth.

32:1 ¶ And Jacob {3290} went {1980} <8804> on his way, {1870} and the angels {4397} of God {430} met {6293} <8799> him.

32:2 And when (834) Jacob {3290} saw (7200) them, [7200] <8804> he said, {559} <8799> This (2088) [is] God's {430} host: {4264} and he called {7121} <8799> the name {8034} of that (1931) place {4725} Mahanaim. {4266}

32:3 And Jacob {3290} sent {7971} <8799> messengers {4397} before (6440) him [6440] to (413) Esau {6215} his brother {251} unto the land {776} of Seir, {8165} the country {7704} of Edom. {123}

32:4 And he commanded {6680} <8762> them, saying, {559} <8800> Thus (3541) shall ye speak {559} <8799> unto my lord {113} Esau; {6215} Thy servant {5650} Jacob {3290} saith {559} <8804> thus, (3541) I have sojourned {1481} <8804> with (5973) Laban, {3837} and stayed there {309} <8799> until (5704) now: (6258)

32:5 And I have (1961) oxen, {7794} and asses, {2543} flocks, {6629} and menservants, {5650} and womenservants: {8198} and I have sent {7971} <8799> to tell {5046} <8687> my lord, {113} that I may find {4672} <8800> grace {2580} in thy sight. {5869}

32:6 ¶ And the messengers {4397} returned {7725} <8799> to (413) Jacob, {3290} saying, {559} <8800> We came {935} <8804> to (413) thy brother {251} Esau, {6215} and also (1571) he cometh {1980} <8802> to meet (7125) thee, [7125] <8800> and four (702) hundred {3967} men {376} with (5973) him.

32:7 Then Jacob {3290} was greatly [3966] afraid {3372} <8799> (3966) and distressed: {3334} <8799> and he divided {2673} <8799> (853) the people {5971} that (834) [was] with (854) him, and the flocks, {6629} and herds, {1241} and the camels, {1581} into two {8147} bands; {4264}

32:8 And said, {559} <8799> If (518) Esau {6215} come {935} <8799> to (413) the one {259} company, {4264} and smite (5221) it, [5221] <8689> then the other company {4264} which is left {7604} <8737> shall escape. {6413}

32:9 ¶ And Jacob {3290} said, {559} <8799> O God {430} of my father {1} Abraham, {85} and God {430} of my father {1} Isaac, {3327} the LORD {3068} which saidst {559} <8802> unto (413) me, Return {7725} <8798> unto thy country, {776} and to thy kindred, {4138} and I will deal well {3190} <8686> with (5973) thee:

32:10 I am not worthy (6994) of the least [6994] <8804> of all (4480) (3605) the mercies, {2617} and of all (4480) (3605) the truth, {571} which (834) thou hast shewed {6213} <8804> unto (853) thy servant; {5650} for (3588) with my staff {4731} I passed over {5674} <8804> (853) this (2088) Jordan; {3383} and now (6258) I am become (1961) two {8147} bands. {4264}

32:11 Deliver (5337) me, [5337] <8685> I pray thee, (4994) from the hand {3027} (4480) of my brother, {251} from the hand {3027} (4480) of Esau: {6215} for (3588) I (595) fear [3373] (3372) him, lest (6435) he will come {935} <8799> and smite (5221) me, [5221] <8689> [and] the mother {517} with {5921} the children. {1121}

32:12 And thou (859) saidst, {559} <8804> I will surely [3190] <8687> do thee good, {3190} <8686> (5973) and make {7760} <8804> (853) thy seed {2233} as the sand {2344} of the sea, {3220} which (834) cannot (3808) be numbered {5608} <8735> for multitude. {7230} (4480)

32:13 ¶ And he lodged {3885} <8799> there (8033) that same (1931) night; {3915} and took {3947} <8799> of (4480) that which came {935} <8802> to his hand {3027} a present {4503} for Esau {6215} his brother; {251}

32:14 Two hundred {3967} she goats, {5795} and twenty {6242} he goats, {8495} two hundred {3967} ewes, {7353} and twenty {6242} rams, {352}

32:15 Thirty {7970} milch {3243} <8688> camels {1581} with their colts, {1121} forty {705} kine, {6510} and ten {6235} bulls, {6499} twenty {6242} she asses, {860} and ten {6235} foals. {5895}

32:16 And he delivered {5414} <8799> [them] into the hand {3027} of his servants, {5650} every drove {5739} by themselves; (905) and said {559} <8799> unto (413) his servants, {5650} Pass over {5674} <8798> before (6440) me, [6440] and put {7760} <8799> a space {7305} betwixt {996} drove {5739} and [996] drove. {5739}

32:17 And he commanded {6680} <8762> (853) the foremost, {7223} saying, {559} <8800> When (3588) Esau {6215} my brother {251} meeteth (6298) thee, [6298] <8799> and asketh (7592) thee, [7592] <8804> saying, {559} <8800> Whose (4310) [art] thou? (859) and whither (575) goest [3212] <8799> (1980) thou? and whose (4310) [are] these (428) before {6440} thee?

32:18 Then thou shalt say, {559} <8804> [They be] thy servant {5650} Jacob's; {3290} it (1931) [is] a present {4503} sent {7971} <8803> unto my lord {113} Esau: {6215} and, behold, (2009) also (1571) he (1931) [is] behind (310) us. [310]

32:19 And so {1571} commanded (6680) he [6680] <8762> (853) the second, {8145} and (1571) (853) the third, {7992} and (1571) (853) all (3605) that followed {1980} {310} <8802> the droves, {5739} saying, {559} <8800> On this (2088) manner {1697} shall ye speak {1696} <8762> unto (413) Esau, {6215} when ye find {4672} <8800> him.

32:20 And say (559) ye [559] <8804> moreover, {1571} Behold, (2009) thy servant {5650} Jacob {3290} [is] behind (310) us. [310] For (3588) he said, {559} <8804> I will appease {3722} <8762> (6440) him [6440] with the present {4503} that goeth {1980} <8802> before (6440) me, [6440] and afterward {310} (3651) I will see {7200} <8799> his face; {6440} peradventure (194) he will accept {5375} <8799> (6440) of me. [6440]

32:21 So went {5674} <0> the present {4503} over [5674] <8799> before (5921) (6440) him: [6440] and himself (1931) lodged {3885} <8804> that (1931) night {3915} in the company. {4264}

32:22 And he rose up {6965} <8799> that (1931) night, {3915} and took {3947} <8799> (853) his two {8147} wives, {802} and his two {8147} womenservants, {8198} and his eleven {6240} {259} sons, {3206} and passed over {5674} <8799> (853) the ford {4569} Jabbok. {2999}

32:23 And he took (3947) them, [3947] <8799> and sent them over {5674} <8686> (853) the brook, {5158} and sent over {5674} <8686> (853) that (834) he had.

32:24 ¶ And Jacob {3290} was left {3498} <8735> alone; (905) and there wrestled {79} <8735> a man {376} with (5973) him until (5704) the breaking {5927} <8800> of the day. {7837}

32:25 And when he saw {7200} <8799> that (3588) he prevailed {3201} <8804> not (3808) against him, he touched {5060} <8799> the hollow (3709) of his thigh; {3409} and the hollow {3709} of Jacob's {3290} thigh {3409} was out of joint, {3363} <8799> as he wrestled {79} <8736> with (5973) him.

32:26 And he said, {559} <8799> Let me go, {7971} <8761> for (3588) the day {7837} breaketh. {5927} <8804> And he said, {559} <8799> I will not (3808) let thee go, {7971} <8762> except {518} (3588) thou bless {1288} <8765> me.

32:27 And he said {559} <8799> unto (413) him, What (4100) [is] thy name? {8034} And he said, {559} <8799> Jacob. {3290}

32:28 And he said, {559} <8799> Thy name {8034} shall be called {559} <8735> no (3808) more (5750) Jacob, {3290} but (3588) (518) Israel: {3478} for (3588) as a prince hast thou power {8280} <8804> with (5973) God {430} and with (5973) men, [582] (376) and hast prevailed. {3201} <8799>

32:29 And Jacob {3290} asked {7592} <8799> [him], and said, {559} <8799> Tell {5046} <8685> [me], I pray thee, (4994) thy name. {8034} And he said, {559} <8799> Wherefore (4100) [is] it {2088} [that] thou dost ask {7592} <8799> after my name? {8034} And he blessed {1288} <8762> him there. (8033)

32:30 And Jacob {3290} called {7121} <8799> the name {8034} of the place {4725} Peniel: {6439} for (3588) I have seen {7200} <8804> God {430} face {6440} to (413) face, {6440} and my life {5315} is preserved. {5337} <8735>

32:31 And as (834) he passed over {5674} <8804> (853) Penuel {6439} the sun {8121} rose {2224} <8799> upon him, and he (1931) halted {6760} <8802> upon (5921) his thigh. {3409}

32:32 Therefore (5921) (3651) the children {1121} of Israel {3478} eat {398} <8799> not (3808) [of] (853) the sinew {1517} which shrank, {5384} which (834) [is] upon (5921) the hollow {3709} of the thigh, {3409} unto (5704) this (2088) day: {3117} because (3588) he touched {5060} <8804> the hollow {3709} of Jacob's {3290} thigh {3409} in the sinew {1517} that shrank. {5384}
