Chapter 33

1  The kindness of Jacob and Esau at their meeting.  17  Jacob cometh to Succoth.  18  At Shalem he buyeth a field, and buildeth an altar called El-elohe-Israel.

33:1 ¶ And Jacob {3290} lifted up {5375} <8799> his eyes, {5869} and looked, {7200} <8799> and, behold, (2009) Esau {6215} came, {935} <8802> and with (5973) him four {702} hundred {3967} men. {376} And he divided {2673} <8799> (853) the children {3206} unto (5921) Leah, {3812} and unto (5921) Rachel, {7354} and unto (5921) the two {8147} handmaids. {8198}

33:2 And he put {7760} <8799> (853) the handmaids {8198} and their children {3206} foremost, {7223} and Leah {3812} and her children {3206} after, {314} and Rachel {7354} and Joseph {3130} hindermost. {314}

33:3 And he (1931) passed over {5674} <8804> before (6440) them, [6440] and bowed himself {7812} <8691> to the ground {776} seven {7651} times, {6471} until (5704) he came near {5066} <8800> to (5704) his brother. {251}

33:4 And Esau {6215} ran {7323} <8799> to meet (7125) him, [7125] <8800> and embraced {2263} <8762> him, and fell {5307} <8799> on (5921) his neck, {6677} and kissed (5401) him: [5401] <8799> and they wept. {1058} <8799>

33:5 And he lifted up {5375} <8799> (853) his eyes, {5869} and saw {7200} <8799> (853) the women {802} and the children; {3206} and said, {559} <8799> Who (4310) [are] those {428} with thee? And he said, {559} <8799> The children {3206} which (834) God {430} hath graciously given {2603} <8804> (853) thy servant. {5650}

33:6 Then the handmaidens {8198} came near, {5066} <8799> they (2007) and their children, {3206} and they bowed themselves. {7812} <8691>

33:7 And Leah {3812} also (1571) with her children {3206} came near, {5066} <8799> and bowed themselves: {7812} <8691> and after {310} came [5066] <0> Joseph [3130] near {5066} <8738> (3130) and Rachel, {7354} and they bowed [7812] <8691> themselves. (7812)

33:8 And he said, {559} <8799> What (4310) [meanest] thou by all (3605) this (2088) drove {4264} which (834) I met? {6298} <8804> And he said, {559} <8799> [These are] to find {4672} <8800> grace {2580} in the sight {5869} of my lord. {113}

33:9 And Esau {6215} said, {559} <8799> I have {3426} enough, {7227} my brother; {251} keep (1961) that (834) thou hast unto thyself.

33:10 And Jacob {3290} said, {559} <8799> Nay, (408) I pray thee, (4994) if (518) now (4994) I have found {4672} <8804> grace {2580} in thy sight, {5869} then receive {3947} <8804> my present {4503} at my hand: {3027} (4480) for (3588) therefore (5921) (3651) I have seen {7200} <8804> thy face, {6440} as though I had seen {7200} <8800> the face {6440} of God, {430} and thou wast pleased (7521) with me. [7521] <8799>

33:11 Take, {3947} <8798> I pray thee, (4994) (853) my blessing {1293} that (834) is brought {935} <8717> to thee; because (3588) God {430} hath dealt graciously (2603) with me, [2603] <8804> and because [3605] <0> (3588) I have {3426} enough. {3605} And he urged {6484} <8799> him, and he took {3947} <8799> [it].

33:12 And he said, {559} <8799> Let us take our journey, {5265} <8799> and let us go, [3212] <8799> (1980) and I will go [3212] <8799> (1980) before (5048) thee.

33:13 And he said {559} <8799> unto (413) him, My lord {113} knoweth {3045} <8802> that (3588) the children {3206} [are] tender, {7390} and the flocks {6629} and herds {1241} with young {5763} <8802> [are] with (5921) me: and if men should overdrive {1849} <8804> them one {259} day, {3117} all (3605) the flock {6629} will die. {4191} <8804>

33:14 Let my lord, {113} I pray thee, (4994) pass over {5674} <8799> before {6440} his servant: {5650} and I (589) will lead on {5095} <8691> softly, {328} according as {7272} the cattle {4399} that (834) goeth before (6440) me [6440] and the children {3206} be able to endure, {7272} until (5704) (834) I come {935} <8799> unto (413) my lord {113} unto Seir. {8165}

33:15 And Esau {6215} said, {559} <8799> Let me now (4994) leave {3322} <8686> with (5973) thee [some] of (4480) the folk {5971} that (834) [are] with (854) me. And he said, {559} <8799> What {4100} needeth it? (2088) let me find {4672} <8799> grace {2580} in the sight {5869} of my lord. {113}

33:16 ¶ So Esau {6215} returned {7725} <8799> that (1931) day {3117} on his way {1870} unto Seir. {8165}

33:17 And Jacob {3290} journeyed {5265} <8804> to Succoth, {5523} and built {1129} <8799> him an house, {1004} and made {6213} <8804> booths {5521} for his cattle: {4735} therefore (5921) (3651) the name {8034} of the place {4725} is called {7121} <8804> Succoth. {5523}

33:18 ¶ And Jacob {3290} came {935} <8799> to Shalem, [8004] (8003) a city {5892} of Shechem, {7927} which (834) [is] in the land {776} of Canaan, {3667} when he came {935} <8800> from Padanaram; {6307} (4480) and pitched his tent {2583} <8799> (853) before {6440} the city. {5892}

33:19 And he bought {7069} <8799> (853) a parcel {2513} of a field, {7704} where (834) (8033) he had spread {5186} <8804> his tent, {168} at the hand {3027} (4480) of the children {1121} of Hamor, {2544} Shechem's [7927] (7928) father, {1} for an hundred {3967} pieces of money. {7192}

33:20 And he erected {5324} <8686> there (8033) an altar, {4196} and called (7121) it [7121] <8799> Elelohe-Israel. {415}
