Chapter 34

1  Dinah is ravished by Shechem.  4  He sueth to marry her.  13  The sons of Jacob offer their condition of circumcision to the Shechemites.  20  Hamor and Shechem persuade them to accept it.  25  The sons of Jacob upon that advantage slay them,  27  and spoil their city.  30  Jacob reproveth Simeon and Levi.

34:1 ¶ And Dinah {1783} the daughter {1323} of Leah, {3812} which (834) she bare {3205} <8804> unto Jacob, {3290} went out {3318} <8799> to see {7200} <8800> the daughters {1323} of the land. {776}

34:2 And when Shechem [7927] (7928) the son {1121} of Hamor {2544} the Hivite, {2340} prince {5387} of the country, {776} saw {7200} <8799> her, he took {3947} <8799> her, and lay [7901] <8799> with (7901) her, and defiled (6031) her. [6031] <8762>

34:3 And his soul {5315} clave {1692} <8799> unto Dinah {1783} the daughter {1323} of Jacob, {3290} and he loved {157} <8799> (853) the damsel, {5291} and spake {1696} <8762> kindly {3820} (5921) unto the damsel. {5291}

34:4 And Shechem [7927] (7928) spake {559} <8799> unto (413) his father {1} Hamor, {2544} saying, {559} <8800> Get {3947} <8798> me (853) this (2063) damsel {3207} to wife. {802}

34:5 And Jacob {3290} heard {8085} <8804> that (3588) he had defiled {2930} <8765> (853) Dinah {1783} his daughter: {1323} now his sons {1121} were (1961) with (854) his cattle {4735} in the field: {7704} and Jacob {3290} held his peace {2790} <8689> until (5704) they were come. {935} <8800>

34:6 ¶ And Hamor {2544} the father {1} of Shechem {7927} went out {3318} <8799> unto (413) Jacob {3290} to commune {1696} <8763> with {854} him.

34:7 And the sons {1121} of Jacob {3290} came {935} <8804> out of (4480) the field {7704} when they heard {8085} <8800> [it]: and the men [582] (376) were grieved, {6087} <8691> and they were very [3966] wroth, {2734} <8799> (3966) because (3588) he had wrought {6213} <8804> folly {5039} in Israel {3478} in lying [7901] <8800> with (7901) (853) Jacob's {3290} daughter; {1323} which thing (3651) ought not (3808) to be done. {6213} <8735>

34:8 And Hamor {2544} communed {1696} <8762> with (854) them, saying, {559} <8800> The soul {5315} of my son {1121} Shechem [7927] (7928) longeth {2836} <8804> for your daughter: {1323} I pray you (4994) give {5414} <8798> her him to wife. {802}

34:9 And make ye marriages {2859} <8690> with (854) us, [and] give {5414} <8799> your daughters {1323} unto us, and take {3947} <8799> our daughters {1323} unto you.

34:10 And ye shall dwell {3427} <8799> with (854) us: and the land {776} shall be {1961} <8799> before (6440) you; [6440] dwell {3427} <8798> and trade {5503} <8804> ye therein, and get you possessions {270} <8734> therein.

34:11 And Shechem [7927] (7928) said {559} <8799> unto (413) her father {1} and unto (413) her brethren, {251} Let me find {4672} <8799> grace {2580} in your eyes, {5869} and what (834) ye shall say {559} <8799> unto (413) me I will give. {5414} <8799>

34:12 Ask {7235} <8685> (5921) me never so much {3966} dowry {4119} and gift, {4976} and I will give {5414} <8799> according as (834) ye shall say {559} <8799> unto (413) me: but give {5414} <8798> me (853) the damsel {5291} to wife. {802}

34:13 And the sons {1121} of Jacob {3290} answered {6030} <8799> (853) Shechem [7927] (7928) and Hamor {2544} his father {1} deceitfully, {4820} and said, {1696} <8762> because (834) he had defiled {2930} <8765> (853) Dinah {1783} their sister: {269}

34:14 And they said {559} <8799> unto (413) them, We cannot {3808} {3201} <8799> do {6213} <8800> this (2088) thing, {1697} to give {5414} <8800> (853) our sister {269} to one {376} that (834) is uncircumcised; {6190} for (3588) that (1931) [were] a reproach {2781} unto us:

34:15 But (389) in this {2063} will we consent {225} <8735> unto you: If (518) ye will be (1961) as we [be], that every (3605) male {2145} of you be circumcised; {4135} <8736>

34:16 Then will we give {5414} <8804> (853) our daughters {1323} unto you, and we will take {3947} <8799> your daughters {1323} to us, and we will dwell {3427} <8804> with (854) you, and we will become (1961) one {259} people. {5971}

34:17 But if (518) ye will not (3808) hearken {8085} <8799> unto (413) us, to be circumcised; {4135} <8736> then will we take {3947} <8804> (853) our daughter, {1323} and we will be gone. {1980} <8804>

34:18 And their words {1697} pleased {3190} {5869} <8799> Hamor, {2544} and Shechem [7927] (7928) Hamor's {2544} son. {1121}

34:19 And the young man {5288} deferred {309} <8765> not (3808) to do {6213} <8800> the thing, {1697} because (3588) he had delight {2654} <8804> in Jacob's {3290} daughter: {1323} and he (1931) [was] more honourable {3513} <8737> than all (4480) (3605) the house {1004} of his father. {1}

34:20 ¶ And Hamor {2544} and Shechem [7927] (7928) his son {1121} came {935} <8799> unto (413) the gate {8179} of their city, {5892} and communed {1696} <8762> with (413) the men [582] (376) of their city, {5892} saying, {559} <8800>

34:21 These (428) men [582] (376) [are] peaceable {8003} with {854} us; therefore let them dwell {3427} <8799> in the land, {776} and trade {5503} <8799> therein; for the land, {776} behold, (2009) [it is] large [7342] enough {3027} (7342) for (6440) them; [6440] let us take {3947} <8799> (853) their daughters {1323} to us for wives, {802} and let us give {5414} <8799> them our daughters. {1323}

34:22 Only (389) herein {2063} will the men [582] (376) consent {225} <8735> unto us for to dwell {3427} <8800> with (854) us, to be (1961) one {259} people, {5971} if every (3605) male {2145} among us be circumcised, {4135} <8736> as (834) they (1992) [are] circumcised. {4135} <8737>

34:23 [Shall] not (3808) their cattle {4735} and their substance {7075} and every (3605) beast {929} of theirs [be] ours? only (389) let us consent {225} <8735> unto them, and they will dwell {3427} <8799> with (854) us.

34:24 And unto (413) Hamor {2544} and unto (413) Shechem [7927] (7928) his son {1121} hearkened {8085} <8799> all (3605) that went out {3318} <8802> of the gate {8179} of his city; {5892} and every (3605) male {2145} was circumcised, {4135} <8735> all (3605) that went out {3318} <8802> of the gate {8179} of his city. {5892}

34:25 ¶ And it came to pass (1961) on the third {7992} day, {3117} when they were (1961) sore, {3510} <8802> that two {8147} of the sons {1121} of Jacob, {3290} Simeon {8095} and Levi, {3878} Dinah's {1783} brethren, {251} took {3947} <8799> each man {376} his sword, {2719} and came {935} <8799> upon (5921) the city {5892} boldly, {983} and slew {2026} <8799> all (3605) the males. {2145}

34:26 And they slew {2026} <8804> Hamor {2544} and Shechem [7927] (7928) his son {1121} with the edge {6310} of the sword, {2719} and took {3947} <0> (853) Dinah {1783} out [3947] <8799> of Shechem's [7927] (7928) house, {1004} (4480) and went out. {3318} <8799>

34:27 The sons {1121} of Jacob {3290} came {935} <8804> upon (5921) the slain, {2491} and spoiled {962} <8799> the city, {5892} because (834) they had defiled {2930} <8765> their sister. {269}

34:28 They took {3947} <8804> (853) their sheep, {6629} and their oxen, {1241} and their asses, {2543} and that which (834) [was] in the city, {5892} and that which (834) [was] in the field, {7704}

34:29 And all (3605) their wealth, {2428} and all (3605) their little ones, {2945} and their wives {802} took they captive, {7617} <8804> and spoiled {962} <8799> even all (3605) that (834) [was] in the house. {1004}

34:30 And Jacob {3290} said {559} <8799> to (413) Simeon {8095} and Levi, {3878} Ye have troubled {5916} <8804> me to make me to stink {887} <8687> among the inhabitants {3427} <8802> of the land, {776} among the Canaanites {3669} and the Perizzites: {6522} and I (589) [being] few {4962} in number, {4557} they shall gather themselves together {622} <8738> against (5921) me, and slay (5221) me; [5221] <8689> and I shall be destroyed, {8045} <8738> I (589) and my house. {1004}

34:31 And they said, {559} <8799> Should he deal [6213] <8799> with (6213) (853) our sister {269} as with an harlot? {2181} <8802>
