Chapter 40

1  The butler and baker of Pharaoh in prison.  4  Joseph hath charge of them.  5  He interpreteth their dreams.  20  They come to pass according to his interpretation.  23  The ingratitude of the butler.

40:1 ¶ And it came to pass (1961) after {310} these (428) things, {1697} [that] the butler [8248] <8688> (4945) of the king {4428} of Egypt {4714} and [his] baker {644} <8802> had offended {2398} <8804> their lord {113} the king {4428} of Egypt. {4714}

40:2 And Pharaoh {6547} was wroth {7107} <8799> against {5921} two {8147} [of] his officers, {5631} against (5921) the chief {8269} of the butlers, [8248] <8688> (4945) and against (5921) the chief {8269} of the bakers. {644} <8802>

40:3 And he put {5414} <8799> them in ward {4929} in the house {1004} of the captain {8269} of the guard, {2876} into (413) the prison, {1004} {5470} the place {4725} where (834) (8033) Joseph {3130} [was] bound. {631} <8803>

40:4 And the captain {8269} of the guard {2876} charged {6485} <8799> (853) Joseph {3130} with (854) them, and he served {8334} <8762> them: and they continued (1961) a season {3117} in ward. {4929}

40:5 ¶ And they dreamed {2492} <8799> a dream {2472} both (8147) of them, [8147] each man {376} his dream {2472} in one {259} night, {3915} each man {376} according to the interpretation {6623} of his dream, {2472} the butler [8248] <8688> (4945) and the baker {644} <8802> of the king {4428} of Egypt, {4714} which (834) [were] bound {631} <8803> in the prison. {1004} {5470}

40:6 And Joseph {3130} came in {935} <8799> unto (413) them in the morning, {1242} and looked [7200] <8799> upon (7200) them, and, behold, (2009) they [were] sad. {2196} <8802>

40:7 And he asked {7592} <8799> (853) Pharaoh's {6547} officers {5631} that (834) [were] with (854) him in the ward {4929} of his lord's {113} house, {1004} saying, {559} <8800> Wherefore (4069) look {6440} ye [so] sadly {7451} to day? {3117}

40:8 And they said {559} <8799> unto (413) him, We have dreamed {2492} <8804> a dream, {2472} and [there is] no (369) interpreter {6622} <8802> of it. And Joseph {3130} said {559} <8799> unto (413) them, [Do] not (3808) interpretations {6623} [belong] to God? {430} tell (5608) me [5608] <8761> [them], I pray you. (4994)

40:9 And the chief {8269} butler [8248] <8688> (4945) told {5608} <8762> (853) his dream {2472} to Joseph, {3130} and said {559} <8799> to him, In my dream, {2472} behold, (2009) a vine {1612} [was] before (6440) me; [6440]

40:10 And in the vine {1612} [were] three {7969} branches: {8299} and it [was] as though it budded, {6524} <8802> [and] her (1931) blossoms {5322} shot forth; {5927} <8804> and the clusters {811} thereof brought forth (1310) ripe [1310] <8689> grapes: {6025}

40:11 And Pharaoh's {6547} cup {3563} [was] in my hand: {3027} and I took {3947} <8799> (853) the grapes, {6025} and pressed {7818} <8799> them into (413) Pharaoh's {6547} cup, {3563} and I gave {5414} <8799> (853) the cup {3563} into (5921) Pharaoh's {6547} hand. {3709}

40:12 And Joseph {3130} said {559} <8799> unto him, This (2088) [is] the interpretation {6623} of it: The three {7969} branches {8299} [are] three {7969} days: {3117}

40:13 Yet {5750} within three {7969} days {3117} shall Pharaoh {6547} lift up {5375} <8799> (853) thine head, {7218} and restore {7725} <8689> thee unto (5921) thy place: {3653} and thou shalt deliver {5414} <8804> Pharaoh's {6547} cup {3563} into his hand, {3027} after the former {7223} manner {4941} when (834) thou wast (1961) his butler. [8248] <8688> (4945)

40:14 But (3588) (518) think [2142] <8804> on (2142) me when (834) it shall be well {3190} <8799> with thee, and shew {6213} <8804> kindness, {2617} I pray thee, (4994) unto (5973) me, and make mention {2142} <8689> of me unto (413) Pharaoh, {6547} and bring me [3318] <8689> out (3318) of (4480) this (2088) house: {1004}

40:15 For (3588) indeed I was stolen away {1589} <8795> out of the land {776} (4480) of the Hebrews: {5680} and here (6311) also (1571) have I done {6213} <8804> nothing {3972} (3808) that (3588) they should put {7760} <8804> me into the dungeon. {953}

40:16 When the chief {8269} baker {644} <8802> saw {7200} <8799> that (3588) the interpretation {6622} <8804> was good, {2896} he said {559} <8799> unto (413) Joseph, {3130} I (589) also {637} [was] in my dream, {2472} and, behold, (2009) [I had] three {7969} white {2751} baskets {5536} on (5921) my head: {7218}

40:17 And in the uppermost {5945} basket {5536} [there was] of all manner [3978] (4480) (3605) of bakemeats {4639} {644} <8802> (3978) for Pharaoh; {6547} and the birds {5775} did eat {398} <8802> them out of (4480) the basket {5536} upon {5921} (4480) my head. {7218}

40:18 And Joseph {3130} answered {6030} <8799> and said, {559} <8799> This (2088) [is] the interpretation {6623} thereof: The three {7969} baskets {5536} [are] three {7969} days: {3117}

40:19 Yet (5750) within three {7969} days {3117} shall Pharaoh {6547} lift up {5375} <8799> (853) thy head {7218} from off (4480) (5921) thee, and shall hang {8518} <8804> thee on (5921) a tree; {6086} and the birds {5775} shall eat {398} <8804> (853) thy flesh {1320} from off (4480) (5921) thee.

40:20 ¶ And it came to pass (1961) the third {7992} day, {3117} [which was] (853) Pharaoh's {6547} birthday, {3117} {3205} <8715> that he made {6213} <8799> a feast {4960} unto all (3605) his servants: {5650} and he lifted up {5375} <8799> (853) the head {7218} of the chief {8269} butler [8248] <8688> (4945) and of the chief {8269} baker {644} <8802> among {8432} his servants. {5650}

40:21 And he restored {7725} <0> (853) the chief {8269} butler [8248] <8688> (4945) unto (5921) his butlership {4945} again; [7725] <8686> and he gave {5414} <8799> the cup {3563} into (5921) Pharaoh's {6547} hand: {3709}

40:22 But he hanged {8518} <8804> the chief {8269} baker: {644} <8802> as (834) Joseph {3130} had interpreted {6622} <8804> to them.

40:23 Yet did not (3808) the chief {8269} butler [8248] <8688> (4945) remember {2142} <8804> (853) Joseph, {3130} but forgat {7911} <8799> him.
