Chapter 42

1  Jacob sendeth his ten sons to buy corn in Egypt.  16  They are imprisoned by Joseph for spies.  18  They are set at liberty, on condition to bring Benjamin.  21  They have remorse for Joseph.  24  Simeon is kept for a pledge.  25  They return with corn, and their money.  29  Their relation to Jacob.  36  Jacob refuseth to send Benjamin.

42:1 ¶ Now when Jacob {3290} saw {7200} <8799> that (3588) there was {3426} corn {7668} in Egypt, {4714} Jacob {3290} said {559} <8799> unto his sons, {1121} Why (4100) do ye look [7200] <8691> one upon another? (7200)

42:2 And he said, {559} <8799> Behold, (2009) I have heard {8085} <8804> that (3588) there is {3426} corn {7668} in Egypt: {4714} get you down {3381} <8798> thither, (8033) and buy {7666} <8798> for us from thence; (4480) (8033) that we may live, {2421} <8799> and not (3808) die. {4191} <8799>

42:3 ¶ And Joseph's {3130} ten {6235} brethren {251} went down {3381} <8799> to buy {7666} <8800> corn {1250} in Egypt. {4714} (4480)

42:4 But Benjamin, {1144} Joseph's {3130} brother, {251} Jacob {3290} sent {7971} <8804> not (3808) with (854) his brethren; {251} for (3588) he said, {559} <8804> Lest peradventure {6435} mischief {611} befall (7122) him. [7122] <8799>

42:5 And the sons {1121} of Israel {3478} came {935} <8799> to buy {7666} <8800> [corn] among {8432} those that came: {935} <8802> for (3588) the famine {7458} was (1961) in the land {776} of Canaan. {3667}

42:6 And Joseph {3130} [was] the governor {7989} over (5921) the land, {776} [and] he (1931) [it was] that sold {7666} <8688> to all (3605) the people {5971} of the land: {776} and Joseph's {3130} brethren {251} came, {935} <8799> and bowed down [7812] <8691> themselves (7812) before him [with] their faces {639} to the earth. {776}

42:7 And Joseph {3130} saw {7200} <8799> (853) his brethren, {251} and he knew {5234} <8686> them, but made himself strange {5234} <8691> unto (413) them, and spake {1696} <8762> roughly {7186} unto (854) them; and he said {559} <8799> unto (413) them, Whence {370} (4480) come {935} <8804> ye? And they said, {559} <8799> From the land {776} (4480) of Canaan {3667} to buy {7666} <8800> food. {400}

42:8 And Joseph {3130} knew {5234} <8686> (853) his brethren, {251} but they (1992) knew {5234} <8689> not (3808) him.

42:9 And Joseph {3130} remembered {2142} <8799> (853) the dreams {2472} which (834) he dreamed {2492} <8804> of them, and said {559} <8799> unto (413) them, Ye (859) [are] spies; {7270} <8764> to see {7200} <8800> (853) the nakedness {6172} of the land {776} ye are come. {935} <8804>

42:10 And they said {559} <8799> unto (413) him, Nay, (3808) my lord, {113} but to buy {7666} <8800> food {400} are thy servants {5650} come. {935} <8804>

42:11 We {5168} [are] all (3605) one {259} man's {376} sons; {1121} we (587) [are] true {3651} [men], thy servants {5650} are (1961) no (3808) spies. {7270} <8764>

42:12 And he said {559} <8799> unto (413) them, Nay, (3808) but (3588) to see {7200} <8800> the nakedness {6172} of the land {776} ye are come. {935} <8804>

42:13 And they said, {559} <8799> Thy servants {5650} [are] twelve {8147} {6240} brethren, {251} the sons {1121} of one {259} man {376} in the land {776} of Canaan; {3667} and, behold, (2009) the youngest {6996} [is] this day {3117} with (854) our father, {1} and one {259} [is] not. (369)

42:14 And Joseph {3130} said {559} <8799> unto (413) them, That (1931) [is it] that (834) I spake {1696} <8765> unto (413) you, saying, {559} <8800> Ye (859) [are] spies: {7270} <8764>

42:15 Hereby {2063} ye shall be proved: {974} <8735> By the life {2416} of Pharaoh {6547} ye shall not go forth {3318} <8799> hence, (4480) (2088) except (3588) (518) your youngest {6996} brother {251} come {935} <8800> hither. (2008)

42:16 Send {7971} <8798> one {259} of (4480) you, and let him fetch {3947} <8799> (853) your brother, {251} and ye (859) shall be kept in prison, {631} <8734> that your words {1697} may be proved, {974} <8735> whether [there be any] truth {571} in {854} you: or else {3808} (518) by the life {2416} of Pharaoh {6547} surely (3588) ye (859) [are] spies. {7270} <8764>

42:17 And he put them all together {622} <8799> (853) into (413) ward {4929} three {7969} days. {3117}

42:18 And Joseph {3130} said {559} <8799> unto (413) them the third {7992} day, {3117} This (2063) do, {6213} <8798> and live; {2421} <8798> [for] I (589) fear {3373} (853) God: {430}

42:19 If (518) ye (859) [be] true {3651} [men], let one {259} of your brethren {251} be bound {631} <8735> in the house {1004} of your prison: {4929} go [3212] <8798> (1980) ye, (859) carry {935} <8685> corn {7668} for the famine {7459} of your houses: {1004}

42:20 But bring {935} <8686> your youngest {6996} brother {251} unto (413) me; so shall your words {1697} be verified, {539} <8735> and ye shall not (3808) die. {4191} <8799> And they did {6213} <8799> so. (3651)

42:21 ¶ And they said {559} <8799> one {376} to (413) another, {251} We (587) [are] verily {61} guilty {818} concerning (5921) our brother, {251} in that {834} we saw {7200} <8804> the anguish {6869} of his soul, {5315} when he besought {2603} <8692> (413) us, and we would not (3808) hear; {8085} <8804> therefore (5921) (3651) is this (2063) distress {6869} come {935} <8804> upon (413) us.

42:22 And Reuben {7205} answered {6030} <8799> them, saying, {559} <8800> Spake (559) I [559] <8804> not (3808) unto (413) you, saying, {559} <8800> Do not (408) sin {2398} <8799> against the child; {3206} and ye would not (3808) hear? {8085} <8804> therefore, behold, (2009) also (1571) his blood {1818} is required. {1875} <8738>

42:23 And they (1992) knew {3045} <8804> not (3808) that (3588) Joseph {3130} understood {8085} <8802> [them]; for (3588) he spake unto (996) them by an interpreter. {3887} <8688>

42:24 And he turned himself about {5437} <8735> from (4480) (5921) them, and wept; {1058} <8799> and returned (7725) to (413) them again, [7725] <8799> and communed {1696} <8762> with (413) them, and took {3947} <8799> from (4480) (854) them (853) Simeon, {8095} and bound {631} <8799> him before their eyes. {5869}

42:25 ¶ Then Joseph {3130} commanded {6680} <8762> to fill {4390} <8762> (853) their sacks {3627} with corn, {1250} and to restore {7725} <8687> every man's {376} money {3701} into (413) his sack, {8242} and to give {5414} <8800> them provision {6720} for the way: {1870} and thus {3651} did (6213) he [6213] <8799> unto them.

42:26 And they laded {5375} <8799> (5921) their asses {2543} with (853) the corn, {7668} and departed [3212] <8799> (1980) thence. (4480) (8033)

42:27 And as one {259} of them opened {6605} <8799> (853) his sack {8242} to give {5414} <8800> his ass {2543} provender {4554} in the inn, {4411} he espied {7200} <8799> (853) his money; {3701} for, behold, (2009) it (1931) [was] in his sack's {572} mouth. {6310}

42:28 And he said {559} <8799> unto (413) his brethren, {251} My money {3701} is restored; {7725} <8717> and, lo, {2009} [it is] even (1571) in my sack: {572} and their heart {3820} failed {3318} <8799> [them], and they were afraid, {2729} <8799> saying {559} <8800> one {376} to (413) another, {251} What (4100) [is] this (2063) [that] God {430} hath done {6213} <8804> unto us?

42:29 ¶ And they came {935} <8799> unto (413) Jacob {3290} their father {1} unto the land {776} of Canaan, {3667} and told {5046} <8686> him (853) all (3605) that befell {7136} <8802> unto them; saying, {559} <8800>

42:30 The man, {376} [who is] the lord {113} of the land, {776} spake {1696} <8765> roughly {7186} to (854) us, and took {5414} <8799> us for spies {7270} <8764> of (853) the country. {776}

42:31 And we said {559} <8799> unto (413) him, We (587) [are] true {3651} [men]; we are (1961) no (3808) spies: {7270} <8764>

42:32 We (587) [be] twelve {6240} {8147} brethren, {251} sons {1121} of our father; {1} one {259} [is] not, (369) and the youngest {6996} [is] this day {3117} with (854) our father {1} in the land {776} of Canaan. {3667}

42:33 And the man, {376} the lord {113} of the country, {776} said {559} <8799> unto (413) us, Hereby (2063) shall I know {3045} <8799> that (3588) ye (859) [are] true {3651} [men]; leave [3240] <8685> (5117) one {259} of your brethren {251} [here] with (854) me, and take {3947} <8798> [food for] the famine {7459} of your households, {1004} and be gone: [3212] <8798> (1980)

42:34 And bring {935} <8685> (853) your youngest {6996} brother {251} unto (413) me: then shall I know {3045} <8799> that (3588) ye (859) [are] no (3808) spies, {7270} <8764> but (3588) [that] ye (859) [are] true {3651} [men: so] will I deliver {5414} <8799> you (853) your brother, {251} and ye shall traffick {5503} <8799> in the land. {776}

42:35 ¶ And it came to pass (1961) as they (1992) emptied {7324} <8688> their sacks, {8242} that, behold, (2009) every man's {376} bundle {6872} of money {3701} [was] in his sack: {8242} and when [both] they (1992) and their father {1} saw {7200} <8799> (853) the bundles {6872} of money, {3701} they were afraid. {3372} <8799>

42:36 And Jacob {3290} their father {1} said {559} <8799> unto (413) them, Me have ye bereaved {7921} <8765> [of my children]: Joseph {3130} [is] not, (369) and Simeon {8095} [is] not, (369) and ye will take {3947} <8799> Benjamin {1144} [away]: all (3605) these things are (1961) against (5921) me.

42:37 And Reuben {7205} spake {559} <8799> unto (413) his father, {1} saying, {559} <8800> Slay {4191} <8686> (853) my two {8147} sons, {1121} if (518) I bring {935} <8686> him not (3808) to (413) thee: deliver {5414} <8798> him into (5921) my hand, {3027} and I (589) will bring (7725) him to (413) thee again. [7725] <8686>

42:38 And he said, {559} <8799> My son {1121} shall not (3808) go down {3381} <8799> with (5973) you; for (3588) his brother {251} is dead, {4191} <8804> and he (1931) is left {7604} <8738> alone: (905) if mischief {611} befall {7122} <8804> him by the way {1870} in the which (834) ye go, [3212] <8799> (1980) then shall ye bring down {3381} <8689> (853) my gray hairs {7872} with sorrow {3015} to the grave. {7585}
