Chapter 48

1  Joseph with his sons visiteth his sick father.  2  Jacob strengtheneth himself to bless them.  3  He repeateth the promise.  5  He taketh Ephraim and Manasseh as his own.  7  He telleth Joseph of his mother's grave.  9  He blesseth Ephraim and Manasseh.  17  He preferreth the younger before the elder.  21  He prophesieth their return to Canaan.

48:1 ¶ And it came to pass (1961) after {310} these (428) things, {1697} that [one] told {559} <8799> Joseph, {3130} Behold, (2009) thy father {1} [is] sick: {2470} <8802> and he took {3947} <8799> with (5973) him (853) his two {8147} sons, {1121} (853) Manasseh {4519} and Ephraim. {669}

48:2 And [one] told {5046} <8686> Jacob, {3290} and said, {559} <8799> Behold, (2009) thy son {1121} Joseph {3130} cometh {935} <8802> unto (413) thee: and Israel {3478} strengthened [2388] <8691> himself, (2388) and sat {3427} <8799> upon (5921) the bed. {4296}

48:3 And Jacob {3290} said {559} <8799> unto (413) Joseph, {3130} God {410} Almighty {7706} appeared {7200} <8738> unto (413) me at Luz {3870} in the land {776} of Canaan, {3667} and blessed {1288} <8762> me,

48:4 And said {559} <8799> unto (413) me, Behold, (2009) I will make thee fruitful, {6509} <8688> and multiply {7235} <8689> thee, and I will make {5414} <8804> of thee a multitude {6951} of people; {5971} and will give {5414} <8804> (853) this (2063) land {776} to thy seed {2233} after (310) thee [310] [for] an everlasting {5769} possession. {272}

48:5 ¶ And now (6258) thy two {8147} sons, {1121} Ephraim {669} and Manasseh, {4519} which were born {3205} <8737> unto thee in the land {776} of Egypt {4714} before {5704} I came {935} <8800> unto (413) thee into Egypt, {4714} [are] mine; as Reuben {7205} and Simeon, {8095} they shall be (1961) mine.

48:6 And thy issue, {4138} which (834) thou begettest {3205} <8689> after {310} them, shall be (1961) thine, [and] shall be called {7121} <8735> after {5921} the name {8034} of their brethren {251} in their inheritance. {5159}

48:7 And as for me, (589) when I came {935} <8800> from Padan, {6307} (4480) Rachel {7354} died {4191} <8804> by (5921) me in the land {776} of Canaan {3667} in the way, {1870} when [5750] yet (5750) [there was] but a little {3530} way {776} to come {935} <8800> unto Ephrath: {672} and I buried (6912) her [6912] <8799> there (8033) in the way {1870} of Ephrath; {672} the same (1931) [is] Bethlehem. {1035}

48:8 And Israel {3478} beheld {7200} <8799> Joseph's {3130} (853) sons, {1121} and said, {559} <8799> Who (4310) [are] these? (428)

48:9 And Joseph {3130} said {559} <8799> unto (413) his father, {1} They (1992) [are] my sons, {1121} whom (834) God {430} hath given {5414} <8804> me in this (2088) [place]. And he said, {559} <8799> Bring (3947) them, [3947] <8798> I pray thee, (4994) unto (413) me, and I will bless {1288} <8762> them.

48:10 Now the eyes {5869} of Israel {3478} were dim {3513} <8804> for age, {2207} (4480) [so that] he could {3201} <8799> not (3808) see. {7200} <8800> And he brought them near {5066} <8686> (853) unto (413) him; and he kissed {5401} <8799> them, and embraced {2263} <8762> them.

48:11 And Israel {3478} said {559} <8799> unto (413) Joseph, {3130} I had not (3808) thought {6419} <8765> to see {7200} <8800> thy face: {6440} and, lo, (2009) God {430} hath shewed {7200} <8689> me also (1571) (853) thy seed. {2233}

48:12 And Joseph {3130} brought them out {3318} <8686> (853) from between {5973} (4480) his knees, {1290} and he bowed [7812] <8691> himself (7812) with his face {639} to the earth. {776}

48:13 And Joseph {3130} took {3947} <8799> (853) them both, {8147} (853) Ephraim {669} in his right hand {3225} toward Israel's {3478} left hand, {8040} (4480) and Manasseh {4519} in his left hand {8040} toward Israel's {3478} right hand, {3225} (4480) and brought [them] near {5066} <8686> unto (413) him.

48:14 And Israel {3478} stretched out {7971} <8799> (853) his right hand, {3225} and laid {7896} <8799> [it] upon (5921) Ephraim's {669} head, {7218} who (1931) [was] the younger, {6810} and his left hand {8040} upon (5921) Manasseh's {4519} head, {7218} guiding [7919] <0> his hands [3027] wittingly; {7919} <8765> (853) (3027) for (3588) Manasseh {4519} [was] the firstborn. {1060}

48:15 ¶ And he blessed {1288} <8762> (853) Joseph, {3130} and said, {559} <8799> God, {430} before {6440} whom (834) my fathers {1} Abraham {85} and Isaac {3327} did walk, {1980} <8694> the God {430} which fed {7462} <8802> me all my life long {5750} (4480) unto (5704) this (2088) day, {3117}

48:16 The Angel {4397} which redeemed {1350} <8802> me from all (4480) (3605) evil, {7451} bless {1288} <8762> (853) the lads; {5288} and let my name {8034} be named {7121} <8735> on them, and the name {8034} of my fathers {1} Abraham {85} and Isaac; {3327} and let them grow {1711} <8799> into a multitude {7230} in the midst {7130} of the earth. {776}

48:17 And when Joseph {3130} saw {7200} <8799> that (3588) his father {1} laid {7896} <8799> his right {3225} hand {3027} upon (5921) the head {7218} of Ephraim, {669} it displeased {5869} [3415] <8799> (7489) him: and he held up {8551} <8799> his father's {1} hand, {3027} to remove {5493} <8687> it from (4480) (5921) Ephraim's {669} head {7218} unto (5921) Manasseh's {4519} head. {7218}

48:18 And Joseph {3130} said {559} <8799> unto (413) his father, {1} Not (3808) so, (3651) my father: {1} for (3588) this (2088) [is] the firstborn; {1060} put {7760} <8798> thy right hand {3225} upon (5921) his head. {7218}

48:19 And his father {1} refused, {3985} <8762> and said, {559} <8799> I know {3045} <8804> [it], my son, {1121} I know {3045} <8804> [it]: he (1931) also (1571) shall become (1961) a people, {5971} and he (1931) also (1571) shall be great: {1431} <8799> but truly {199} his younger {6996} brother {251} shall be greater {1431} <8799> than (4480) he, and his seed {2233} shall become (1961) a multitude {4393} of nations. {1471}

48:20 And he blessed {1288} <8762> them that (1931) day, {3117} saying, {559} <8800> In thee shall Israel {3478} bless, {1288} <8762> saying, {559} <8800> God {430} make {7760} <8799> thee as Ephraim {669} and as Manasseh: {4519} and he set {7760} <8799> (853) Ephraim {669} before {6440} Manasseh. {4519}

48:21 And Israel {3478} said {559} <8799> unto (413) Joseph, {3130} Behold, (2009) I (595) die: {4191} <8801> but God {430} shall be (1961) with (5973) you, and bring you again {7725} <8689> (853) unto (413) the land {776} of your fathers. {1}

48:22 Moreover I (589) have given {5414} <8804> to thee one {259} portion {7926} above (5921) thy brethren, {251} which (834) I took {3947} <8804> out of the hand {3027} (4480) of the Amorite {567} with my sword {2719} and with my bow. {7198}
