{Exodus 12:29} And it came to pass, x1961 that at midnight 2677 3915 the LORD 3068 smote 5221 z8689 all x3605 the firstborn 1060 in the land 776 of Egypt, 4714 from the firstborn 1060 x4480 of Pharaoh 6547 that sat 3427 z8802 on x5921 his throne 3678 unto x5704 the firstborn 1060 of the captive 7628 that x834 [was] in the dungeon; 1004 953 and all x3605 the firstborn 1060 of cattle. 929
at midnight:
"For I will pass²° through¹ the landª of Egyptª this¹ night,ª and will smiteª° all¹ the firstbornª in the landª of Egypt,ª both manª¹ and beast;ª and against all¹ the godsª of Egyptª I will executeª° judgment:ª I¹ [am] the LORD.ª" {Exd 12:12} + "And Mosesª said,ª° Thus¹ saithª° the LORD,ª About midnightªª will I¹ go outª° into the midstª of Egypt:ª" {Exd 11:4} + "And it came to pass,¹ when¹ Pharaohª would hardlyª° let us go,ª° that the LORDª slewª° all¹ the firstbornª in the landª of Egypt,ª both the firstbornª¹ of man,ª and the firstbornª of beast:ª therefore¹¹ I¹ sacrificeª° to the LORDª all¹ that openethª the matrix,ª being males;ª but all¹ the firstbornª of my childrenª I redeem.ª°" {Exd 13:15} + "In a momentª shall they die,ª° and the peopleª shall be troubledª° at midnight,ªª and pass away:ª° and the mightyª shall be taken awayª° without¹ hand.ª" {Job 34:20} + "Forª yourselvesª knowª° perfectlyª thatª the¹ dayª of the Lordª soª comethª° asª a thiefª inª the night.ª ... Forª whenª they shall say,ª° Peaceª andª safety;ª thenª suddenª destructionª cometh uponª° them,ª asª travailª upon² a woman with child;ªª°¹ andª they shall²° notª escape.ª°" {1Th 5:2-3}
the LORD[YHWH] smote:
The infliction of this judgment on the Egyptians was most equitable; because, after their nation had been preserved by one of the Israelitish family, they had, contrary to all right, and in defiance of original stipulation, enslaved the people to whom they had been so much indebted, had murdered their offspring, and made their bondage intolerable. See Bryant, p. 160. "Because¹ all¹ the firstbornª [are] mine; [for] on the dayª that I smoteª° all¹ the firstbornª in the landª of Egyptª I hallowedª° unto me all¹ the firstbornª in Israel,ª both manª¹ and¹ beast:ª mine shall they be:¹ I¹ [am] the LORD.ª" {Num 3:13} + "For¹ all¹ the firstbornª of the childrenª of Israelª [are] mine, [both] manª and beast:ª on the dayª that I smoteª° every¹ firstbornª in the landª of Egyptª I sanctifiedª° them for myself." {Num 8:17} + "For the Egyptiansª buriedª° all¹ [their] firstborn,ª¹ which¹ the LORDª had smittenª° among them: upon their godsª also the LORDª executedª° judgments.ª" {Num 33:4} + "And smoteª° all¹ the firstbornª in Egypt;ª the chiefª of [their] strengthª in the tabernaclesª of Ham:ª" {Psa 78:51} + "He smoteª° also all¹ the firstbornª in their land,ª the chiefª of all¹ their strength.ª" {Psa 105:36} + "Who smoteª°¹ the firstbornª of Egypt,ª both of manª¹ and¹ beast.ª" {Psa 135:8} + "To him that smoteª° Egyptª in their firstborn:ª for¹ his mercyª [endureth] for ever:ª" {Psa 136:10} + "Through faithª he keptª° the¹ passover,ª andª the¹ sprinklingª of blood,ª lestª he that destroyedª° the¹ firstbornª should touchª° them.ª" {Hbr 11:28} + "To the general assemblyª andª churchª of the firstborn,ª which are writtenª° inª heaven,ª andª to Godª the Judgeª of all,ª andª to the spiritsª of just menª made perfect,ª°" {Hbr 12:23}
the firstborn of Pharaoh:
"And I sayª° unto¹ thee, Let¹ my sonª go,ª° that he may serveª° me: and if thou refuseª° to let him go,ª° behold,¹ I¹ will slayª°¹ thy son,ª [even] thy firstborn.ª" {Exd 4:23} + "And all¹ the firstbornª in the landª of Egyptª shall die,ª° from the firstbornª¹ of Pharaohª that sittethª° upon¹ his throne,ª even unto¹ the firstbornª of the maidservantª that¹ [is] behindª the mill;ª and all¹ the firstbornª of beasts.ª" {Exd 11:5}
dungeon:
Heb. house of the pit, "And they shall be gathered together,ª° [as] prisonersª are gatheredª in¹ the pit,ª and shall be shut upª° in¹ the prison,ª and after manyª¹ daysª shall they be visited.ª°" {Isa 24:22} + "The captive exileª° hastenethª° that he may be loosed,ª° and that he should not¹ dieª° in the pit,ª nor¹ that his breadª should fail.ª°" {Isa 51:14} + "Then tookª° they¹ Jeremiah,ª and castª° him into¹ the dungeonª of Malchiahª the sonª of Hammelech,²¹ that¹ [was] in the courtª of the prison:ª and they let downª°¹ Jeremiahª with cords.ª And in the dungeonª [there was] no¹ water,ª but¹¹ mire:ª so Jeremiahª sunkª° in the mire.ª" {Jer 38:6} + "So they drew upª°¹ Jeremiahª with cords,ª and took him upª°¹ out of¹ the dungeon:ª and Jeremiahª remainedª° in the courtª of the prison.ª" {Jer 38:13} + "As for thee¹ also,¹ by the bloodª of thy covenantª I have sent forthª° thy prisonersª out of the pitª¹ wherein [is] no¹ water.ª" {Zch 9:11}
