{Exodus 12:40} Now the sojourning 4186 of the children 1121 of Israel, 3478 who x834 dwelt 3427 z8804 in Egypt, 4714 [was] four 702 hundred 3967 y8141 and thirty 7970 years. 8141
The Samaritan Pentateuch reads, "Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, and of their fathers in the land of Canaan and in the land of Egypt, was 430 years." The Alexandrine copy of the LXX has the same reading; and the same statement is made by the apostle Paul, in "Andª thisª I say,ª° [that] the covenant,ª that was confirmed beforeª° ofª Godª inª Christ,ª the¹ law,ª which wasª° four hundredª andª thirtyª yearsª after,ª cannot² disannul,ª°¹ that² it should make²° the promise² of none effect.ª°¹¹" {Gal 3:17}, who reckons from the promise made to Abraham to the giving of the law. That these three witnesses have the truth, the chronology itself proves; for it is evident that the descendants of Israel did not dwell 430 years in Egypt; while it is equally evident, that the period from Abraham's entry into Canaan to the Exodus, is exactly that number. Thus, from Abraham's entrance into the promised land to the birth of Isaac, was 25 years; Isaac was 60 at the birth of Jacob; Jacob was 130 at his going into Egypt; where he and his children continued 215 years more; making in the whole 430 years. See Kennicott's Dissertation on the Hebrew Text.
sojourning:
"The¹ Godª of thisª peopleª of Israelª choseª° ourª fathers,ª andª exaltedª° the¹ peopleª whenª they dwelt as strangersª inª the landª of Egypt,ª andª withª an highª armª brought¹ he²° themª out ofª it.ª" {Act 13:17} + "By faithª he sojournedª° inª the¹ landª of promise,ª as² [in]¹ a strange country,ª dwellingª° inª tabernaclesª withª Isaacª and²¹ Jacob,ª the¹ heirs with himª of the¹ sameª promise:ª" {Hbr 11:9}
four hundred:
"Now the LORDª had saidª° unto¹ Abram,ª Get thee out²°¹ of thy country,ª¹ and from thy kindred,ª¹ and from thy father's² house,ª¹¹ unto¹ a landª that¹ I will shewª° thee: ... And I will blessª° them that blessª° thee, and curseª° him that cursethª° thee: and in thee shall all¹ familiesª of the earthª be blessed.ª°" {Gen 12:1-3} + "And he saidª° unto Abram,ª Know²° of a suretyª° that¹ thy seedª shall be¹ a strangerª in a landª [that is] not¹ theirs, and shall serveª° them; and they shall afflictª° them fourª hundredª years;ª" {Gen 15:13} + "Andª Godª spakeª° on this wise,ª Thatª hisª seedª shouldª° sojournª inª a strangeª land;ª andª that they should bring²° them² into bondage,ª°¹ andª entreat [them] evilª° four hundredª years.ª" {Act 7:6} + "Nowª to Abrahamª andª hisª seedª were²° the¹ promisesª made.ª° He saithª° not,ª Andª to seeds,ª asª ofª many;ª butª asª ofª one,ª Andª to thyª seed,ª whichª isª° Christ.ª ... Andª thisª I say,ª° [that] the covenant,ª that was confirmed beforeª° ofª Godª inª Christ,ª the¹ law,ª which wasª° four hundredª andª thirtyª yearsª after,ª cannot² disannul,ª°¹ that² it should make²° the promise² of none effect.ª°¹¹" {Gal 3:16-17}
