- or, as the Greek has it, "his hands", Menachem gives reason why it is written hand, to signify the right hand, because that was lifted up higher than the left. The lifting up of the hand was a gesture used in speaking, and signifying any weighty thing, "Thus¹ saithª° the Lordª GOD,ª Behold,¹ I will lift upª° mine handª to¹ the Gentiles,ª and set upª° my standardª to¹ the people:ª and they shall bringª° thy sonsª in [their] arms,ª and thy daughtersª shall be carriedª° upon¹ [their] shoulders.ª" {Isa 49:22}; and particularly in swearing, "And Abramª saidª° to¹ the kingª of Sodom,ª I have lift upª° mine handª unto¹ the LORD,ª the most highª God,ª the possessorª° of heavenª and earth,ª" {Gen 14:22}; praying, "Hearª° the voiceª of my supplications,ª when I cryª° unto¹ thee, when I lift upª° my handsª toward¹ thy holyª oracle.ª" {Psa 28:2}; and blessing, either of God, "Lift upª° your handsª [in] the sanctuary,ª and blessª°¹ the LORD.ª" {Psa 134:2}, or of men, as in this place.
