The first fourteen verses of this chapter evidently refer to a time previous to the commencement of this book; but as there is no evidence of a transposition, it is better to conclude with Houbigant, that "it is enough to know, that these books contain an account of things transacted in the days of Moses, though not in their regular or chronological order." "And the LORDª spakeª ° unto¹ Mosesª in the wildernessª of Sinai,ª in the tabernacleª of the congregation,ª on the firstª [day] of the secondª month,ª in the secondª yearª after they were come outª ° of the landª ¹ of Egypt,ª saying,ª °" {Num 1:1} + "On the first² dayª ¹ ¹ of the first² ¹ monthª shalt thou set upª °¹ the tabernacleª of the tentª of the congregation.ª" {Exd 40:2}
