St. Paul reckons only 23,000: Moses includes in the 24,000 he names, the 1,000 men who were slain in consequence of the judicial examination ("And the LORDª saidª° unto¹ Moses,ª Takeª°¹ all¹ the headsª of the people,ª and hang them upª°¹ before² the LORDª against¹ the sun,ª that the fierceª angerª of the LORDª may be turned awayª° from Israel.ª¹" {Num 25:4}), as well as the 23,000 who died of the plague; while St. Paul only refers to the latter. "And the LORDª saidª° unto¹ Moses,ª Takeª°¹ all¹ the headsª of the people,ª and hang them upª°¹ before² the LORDª against¹ the sun,ª that the fierceª angerª of the LORDª may be turned awayª° from Israel.ª¹ ... And Mosesª saidª° unto¹ the judgesª° of Israel,ª Slayª° ye every² oneª his menª that were joinedª° unto Baalpeor.ª" {Num 25:4-5} + "Now they that diedª° in the plagueª were¹ fourteenªª thousandª and sevenª hundred,ª beside¹¹ them that diedª° about¹ the matterª of Korah.ª ... And Aaronª returnedª° unto¹ Mosesª unto¹ the doorª of the tabernacleª of the congregation:ª and the plagueª was stayed.ª°" {Num 16:49-50} + "Your eyesª have seenª°¹ what¹ the LORDª didª° because of Baalpeor:ª for¹ all¹ the menª that¹ followedªª° Baalpeor,ª the LORDª thy Godª hath destroyedª° them from amongª¹ you. ... But ye¹ that did cleaveª unto the LORDª your Godª [are] aliveª every one¹ of you this day.ª" {Deu 4:3-4} + "Neitherª let us commit fornication,ª° asª someª of themª committed,ª° andª fellª° inª oneª dayª three² and twenty² thousand.ª¹¹" {1Co 10:8}
