- It is worthy of remark, that Moses does not follow any order hitherto used in arranging the tribes, but places them exactly in the order in which they possessed the land, and according to their fraternal relationship. Judah is first, having the first lot, in the South ("[This] then was¹ the lotª of the tribeª of the childrenª of Judahª by their families;ª [even] to¹ the borderª of Edomª the wildernessª of Zinª southwardª [was] the uttermost partª¹ of the south coast.ª" {Jsh 15:1}); and next to him is Simeon, because his inheritance was "within the inheritance of the children of Judah" ("And the secondª lotª came forthª° to Simeon,ª [even] for the tribeª of the childrenª of Simeonª according to their families:ª and their inheritanceª was¹ withinª the inheritanceª of the childrenª of Judah.ª" {Jsh 19:1}). Benjamin, the third, had his portion between "Judah and the children of Joseph" ("And the lotª of the tribeª of the childrenª of Benjaminª came upª° according to their families:ª and the coastª of their lotª came forthª° between¹ the childrenª of Judahª and the childrenª of Joseph.ª" {Jsh 18:11}). Dan was the fourth, and his lot was westward of Benjamin ("[And] the seventhª lotª came outª° for the tribeª of the childrenª of Danª according to their families.ª ... And the coastª of their inheritanceª was¹ Zorah,ª and Eshtaol,ª and Irshemesh,ª" {Jsh 19:40-41}). Manasseh and his brother Ephraim had their inheritances behind that of Benjamin ("And it went downª° from Janohahª¹ to Ataroth,ª and to Naarath,ª and cameª° to Jericho,ª and went outª° at Jordan.ª" {Jsh 16:7}). Next these dwelt Zebulun and Issachar ("And the thirdª lotª came upª° for the childrenª of Zebulunª according to their families:ª and the borderª of their inheritanceª was¹ unto¹ Sarid:ª ... [And] the fourthª lotª came outª° to Issachar,ª for the childrenª of Issacharª according to their families.ª" {Jsh 19:10-17}); and then Asher and Naphtali ("And the fifthª lotª came outª° for the tribeª of the childrenª of Asherª according to their families.ª ... The sixthª lotª came outª° to the childrenª of Naphtali,ª [even] for the childrenª of Naphtaliª according to their families.ª" {Jsh 19:24-32}).
