your God:
"Thy fathersª went downª° into Egyptª with threescore and tenª persons;ª and now¹ the LORDª thy Godª hath madeª° thee as the starsª of heavenª for multitude.ª" {Deu 10:22} + "And ye shall be leftª° fewª in number,ª whereasª¹ ye were¹ as the starsª of heavenª for multitude;ª because¹ thou wouldest not¹ obeyª° the voiceª of the LORDª thy God.ª" {Deu 28:62} + "And he brought him forthª°¹ abroad,ª and said,ª° Lookª° now¹ toward heaven,ª and tellª° the stars,ª if¹ thou be ableª° to numberª° them: and he saidª° unto him, Soª shall thy seedª be.¹" {Gen 15:5} + "That¹ in blessingª° I will blessª° thee, and in multiplyingª° I will multiplyª°¹ thy seedª as the starsª of the heaven,ª and as the sandª which¹ [is] upon¹ the seaª shore;ª and thy seedª shall possessª°¹ the gateª of his enemies;ª°" {Gen 22:17} + "And thy seedª shall be¹ as the dustª of the earth,ª and thou shalt spread abroadª° to the west,ª and to the east,ª and to the north,ª and to the south:ª and in thee and in thy seedª shall all¹ the familiesª of the earthª be blessed.ª°" {Gen 28:14} + "And the childrenª of Israelª journeyedª° from Ramesesª¹ to Succoth,ª about sixª hundredª thousandª on footª [that were] men,ª besideª children.ª¹" {Exd 12:37} + "Rememberª° Abraham,ª Isaac,ª and Israel,ª thy servants,ª to whom¹ thou swarestª° by thine own self, and saidstª° unto¹ them, I will multiplyª°¹ your seedª as the starsª of heaven,ª and all¹ this¹ landª that¹ I have spokenª° of will I giveª° unto your seed,ª and they shall inheritª° [it] for ever.ª" {Exd 32:13} + "Even all¹ they that were numberedª° were¹ sixª hundredª thousandª and threeª thousandª and fiveª hundredª and fifty.ª" {Num 1:46} + "But Davidª tookª° not¹ the numberª of them from twenty² years² oldª¹¹¹ and under:ª because¹ the LORDª had saidª° he would increaseª°¹ Israelª like to the starsª of the heavens.ª" {1Ch 27:23} + "Their childrenª also multipliedstª° thou as the starsª of heaven,ª and broughtestª° them into¹ the land,ª concerning which¹ thou hadst promisedª° to their fathers,ª that they should go inª° to possessª° [it]." {Neh 9:23}
ye are this day:
This was the promise made by God to Abraham ("And he brought him forthª°¹ abroad,ª and said,ª° Lookª° now¹ toward heaven,ª and tellª° the stars,ª if¹ thou be ableª° to numberª° them: and he saidª° unto him, Soª shall thy seedª be.¹ ... And he believedª° in the LORD;ª and he countedª° it to him for righteousness.ª" {Gen 15:5-6}), which Moses considers now as amply fulfilled. Many suppose the expression to be hyperbolical; and others, no friends to revelation, think it a vain, empty boast, because the stars, in their apprehension, amount to innumerable millions. But, as this refers to the number of stars that appear to the naked eye, which only amount to about 3,010 in both hemispheres, the number of the Israelites far exceeded this; for independently of women and children, at the last census, they amounted to more than 600,000.
