loose his shoe:
Pulling off the shoe seems to express his being degraded to the situation of slaves, who generally went barefoot; and spitting in or rather before (biphney) his face, was a mark of the utmost ignominy. And all¹ the peopleª that¹ [were] in the gate,ª and the elders,ª said,ª° [We are] witnesses.ª The LORDª makeª°¹ the womanª that is comeª° into¹ thine houseª like Rachelª and like Leah,ª which¹ twoª did buildª°¹ the houseª of Israel:ª and doª° thou worthilyª in Ephratah,ª and be famousªª° in Bethlehem:ª" {Rth 4:10-11} + "Wherefore¹ the LORDª Godª of Israelª saith,ª° I saidª° indeedª° [that] thy house,ª and the houseª of thy father,ª should walkª° beforeª me for² ever:ª¹ but now¹ the LORDª saith,ª° Be it far¹ from me;² for¹ them that honourª° me I will honour,ª° and they that despiseª° me shall be lightly esteemed.ª°" {1Sm 2:30}
