{Joshua 21:4} And the lot 1486 came out 3318 z8799 for the families 4940 of the Kohathites: 6956 and the children 1121 of Aaron 175 the priest, 3548 [which were] of x4480 the Levites, 3881 had x1961 by lot 1486 out of the tribe 4294 x4480 of Judah, 3063 and out of the tribe 4294 x4480 of Simeon, 8099 and out of the tribe 4294 x4480 of Benjamin, 1144 thirteen 7969 6240 cities. 5892

the children:
"And the childrenª of Israelª gaveª ° by lotª unto the Levitesª ¹ these¹ citiesª with¹ their suburbs,ª as¹ the LORDª commandedª ° by the handª of Moses.ª ... All¹ the citiesª of the childrenª of Aaron,ª the priests,ª [were] thirteenª ª citiesª with their suburbs.ª" {Jsh 21:8-19} + "And Eleazarª the sonª of Aaronª died;ª ° and they buriedª ° him in a hillª [that pertained to] Phinehasª his son,ª which¹ was givenª ° him in mountª Ephraim.ª" {Jsh 24:33} + "Now these¹ [are] their dwelling placesª throughout their castlesª in their coasts,ª of the sonsª of Aaron,ª of the familiesª of the Kohathites:ª for¹ theirs was¹ the lot.ª ... And out of the tribeª ¹ of Benjamin;ª ¹ Gebaª with her suburbs,ª and Alemethª with her suburbs,ª and Anathothª with her suburbs.ª All¹ their citiesª throughout their familiesª [were] thirteenª ª cities.ª" {1Ch 6:54-60}

the tribe:
These tribes furnished more habitation to the Levites, in proportion, than any of the other tribes, because they possessed a more extensive inheritance, agreeably to what Moses had commanded ("And the citiesª which¹ ye shall giveª ° [shall be] of the possessionª ¹ of the childrenª of Israel:ª from¹ ¹ [them that have] manyª ye shall give many;ª ° but from¹ ¹ [them that have] fewª ye shall give few:ª ° every oneª shall giveª ° of his citiesª ¹ unto the Levitesª according² to¹ his inheritanceª which¹ he inheriteth.ª °" {Num 35:8}). It is worthy of remark, that the principal part of this tribe, whose business was to minister at the sanctuary, which sanctuary was afterwards established at Jerusalem, had their appointment nearest to that city; so that they were always within reach of the sacred work which God had appointed them.
