Ruth:
"Then she fellª° on¹ her face,ª and bowed²° herself¹ to the ground,ª and saidª° unto¹ him, Why¹ have I foundª° graceª in thine eyes,ª that thou shouldest take knowledgeª° of me, seeing I¹ [am] a stranger?ª ... Then she said,ª° Let me findª° favourª in thy sight,ª my lord;ª for¹ that thou hast comfortedª° me, and for that¹ thou hast spokenª° friendlyª¹ unto thine handmaid,ª though I¹ be¹ not¹ like unto oneª of thine handmaidens.ª" {Rth 2:10-13} + "And she arose,ª° and bowed²° herself¹ on [her] faceª to the earth,ª and said,ª° Behold,¹ [let] thine handmaidª [be] a servantª to washª° the feetª of the servantsª of my lord.ª" {1Sm 25:41} + "Forª whosoeverª exaltethª° himselfª shall be abased;ª° andª he that humblethª° himselfª shall be exalted.ª°" {Lke 14:11}
spread therefore:
Hebrew "spread thy wing;" the emblem of protection; and a metaphor taken from the young of fowls, which run under the wings of their mother from birds of prey. Even to the present day, when a Jew marries a woman, he throws the skirts of his talith over her, to signify that he has taken her under his protection. "Now when I passedª° by¹ thee, and looked²° upon¹ thee, behold,¹ thy timeª [was] the timeª of love;ª and I spreadª° my skirtª over¹ thee, and coveredª° thy nakedness:ª yea, I swareª° unto thee, and enteredª° into a covenantª with¹ thee, saithª° the Lordª GOD,ª and thou becamest¹ mine." {Ezk 16:8}
a near kinsman:
or, one that has right to redeem, "And now¹¹ it is trueª that¹¹ I¹ [am thy] near kinsman:ª° howbeit¹ there isª a kinsmanª° nearerª than¹ I." {Rth 3:12} + "And Naomiª saidª° unto her daughter in law,ª Blessedª° [be] he¹ of the LORD,ª who¹ hath not¹ left offª° his kindnessª to¹ the livingª and to¹ the dead.ª° And Naomiª saidª° unto her, The manª [is] near of kinª unto us, one¹ of our next kinsmen.ª°¹" {Rth 2:20}
