{1 Samuel 18:10} And it came to pass x1961 on the morrow, 4283 x4480 that the evil 7451 spirit 7307 from God 430 came 6743 z8799 upon x413 Saul, 7586 and he prophesied 5012 z8691 in the midst 8432 of the house: 1004 and David 1732 played 5059 z8764 with his hand, 3027 as at other times: 3117 and [there was] a javelin 2595 in Saul's 7586 hand. 3027
the evil spirit:
"But the Spiritª of the LORDª departedª° from¹¹ Saul,ª and an evilª spiritª from¹¹ the LORDª troubledª° him. ... And Saul'sª servantsª saidª° unto¹ him, Behold¹ now,¹ an evilª spiritª from Godª troublethª° thee." {1Sm 16:14-15} + "And the evilª spiritª from the LORDª was¹ upon¹ Saul,ª as he¹ satª° in his houseª with his javelinª in his hand:ª and Davidª playedª° with [his] hand.ª" {1Sm 19:9} + "Now¹ therefore, I pray thee,¹ let my lordª the kingª hearª°¹ the wordsª of his servant.ª If¹ the LORDª have stirred thee upª° against me, let him acceptª° an offering:ª but if¹ [they be] the childrenª of men,ª cursedª° [be] they¹ beforeª the LORD;ª for¹ they have driven²° me out¹ this dayª from abidingª°¹ in the inheritanceª of the LORD,ª saying,ª° Go,²°¹ serveª° otherª gods.ª" {1Sm 26:19}
and he prophesied:
Wyyithnabbai, rather, "and he pretended to prophesy; for the verb is in Hithpael, the signification of which conjugation is not only reflex action, but also affectation of the action: "The LORDª hath madeª° thee priestª in the stead of¹ Jehoiadaª the priest,ª that ye should be¹ officersª in the houseª of the LORD,ª for every¹ manª [that is] mad,ª° and maketh himself a prophet,ª° that thou shouldest putª° him in¹ prison,ª and in¹ the stocks.ª ... Now¹ therefore why¹ hast thou not¹ reprovedª° Jeremiahª of Anathoth,ª which maketh himself a prophetª° to you?" {Jer 29:26-27}. The meaning seems to be, that Saul, influenced by the evil spirit, feigned to be prophesying, the better to conceal his murderous intentions, and to render David unsuspicious. "And he¹ stripped offª° his clothesª also,ª and prophesiedª° beforeª Samuelª in like manner,¹ and lay downª° nakedª all¹ that¹ dayª and all¹ that night.ª Wherefore¹¹ they say,ª° [Is] Saulª also¹ among the prophets?ª" {1Sm 19:24} + "And it came to pass,¹ when middayª was past,ª° and they prophesiedª° until¹ the [time] of the offeringª° of the [evening] sacrifice,ª that [there was] neither¹ voice,ª nor¹ any to answer,ª° nor¹ any that regarded.ª" {1Kg 18:29} + "And all¹ the prophetsª prophesiedª° so,¹ saying,ª° Go upª° to Ramothgilead,ª² and prosper:ª° for the LORDª shall deliverª° [it] into the king'sª hand.ª" {1Kg 22:12} + "And the LORDª said,ª° Who¹ shall persuadeª°¹ Ahab,ª that he may go upª° and fallª° at Ramothgilead?ª² And one¹ saidª° on this manner,ª and another¹ saidª° on that manner.ª ... Now¹ therefore, behold,¹ the LORDª hath putª° a lyingª spiritª in the mouthª of all¹ these¹ thy prophets,ª and the LORDª hath spokenª° evilª concerning¹ thee." {1Kg 22:20-23} + "Thus¹ speakethª° the LORDª of hosts,ª the Godª of Israel,ª saying,ª° I have brokenª°¹ the yokeª of the kingª of Babylon.ª ... And I¹ will bring againª° to¹ this¹ placeª Jeconiahª the sonª of Jehoiakimª kingª of Judah,ª with all¹ the captivesª of Judah,ª that wentª° into Babylon,ª saithª° the LORD:ª for¹ I will breakª°¹ the yokeª of the kingª of Babylon.ª" {Jer 28:2-4} + "And Hananiahª spakeª° in the presenceª of all¹ the people,ª saying,ª° Thus¹ saithª° the LORD;ª Even so¹ will I breakª°¹ the yokeª of Nebuchadnezzarª kingª of Babylonª from¹¹ the neckª of all¹ nationsª within the space of¹ two full² years.ª¹ And the prophetª Jeremiahª went²°¹ his way.ª" {Jer 28:11} + "And it shall come to pass¹ in that¹ day,ª saithª° the LORDª of hosts,ª [that] I will cut offª°¹ the namesª of the idolsª out of¹ the land,ª and they shall no¹ more¹ be remembered:ª° and also¹ I will cause¹ the prophetsª and the uncleanª spiritª to passª° out of¹ the land.ª ... But he shall say,ª° I¹ [am] no¹ prophet,ª I¹ [am] an husbandman;ªªª° for¹ manª taught me to keep cattleª° from my youth.ª¹" {Zch 13:2-5} + "Andª it came to pass,ª° as weª wentª° toª prayer,ª a certainª damselª possessedª° with a spiritª of divinationª metª° us,ª whichª broughtª° her²¹ mastersª muchª gainª by soothsaying:ª°" {Act 16:16} + "Andª for this² causeª¹ Godª shall sendª° themª strong² delusion,ª¹ that² theyª should believeª° a lie:ª" {2Th 2:11}
played:
"Let our lordª now¹ commandª° thy servants,ª [which are] beforeª thee, to seek outª° a man,ª [who is] a cunningª° playerª° on an harp:ª and it shall come to pass,¹ when¹ the evilª spiritª from Godª is upon¹ thee, that he shall playª° with his hand,ª and thou shalt be well.ª°" {1Sm 16:16} + "And it came to pass,¹ when¹ the [evil] spiritª from Godª was upon¹ Saul,ª that Davidª tookª°¹ an harp,ª and playedª° with his hand:ª so Saulª was refreshed,ª° and was well,ª° and the evilª spiritª departedª° from¹¹ him." {1Sm 16:23}
and there was:
Wehachanith beyad Shaool, rather, "and the javelin was in the hand of Saul;" for the javelin or spear was the emblem of regal authority; and kings had it always in their hand, as may be seen represented on ancient monuments. In ancient times, says Justin, kings used a spear instead of a sceptre.
