- Amos I a dog's head:
- This was a proverbial expression among the Hebrews to denote whatever was deemed worthless and contemptible. Something similar to this was the answer of the Turkish commander at Beer, on the Euphrates, to a request made to see the castle. "Do they," said he, "take me for a child, or an ass's head, that they would feed me with sweet meats, and dupe me with a bit of cloth? No, they shall not see the castle." "And he bowed²° himself,¹ and said,ª° What¹ [is] thy servant,ª that¹ thou shouldest lookª° upon¹ such¹ a deadª° dogª as I¹ [am]?" {2Sm 9:8} + "Then saidª° Abishaiª the sonª of Zeruiahª unto¹ the king,ª Why¹ should this¹ deadª° dogª curseª°¹ my lordª the king?ª let me go over,ª° I pray thee,¹ and take offª°¹ his head.ª" {2Sm 16:9} + "Thou shalt not¹ bringª° the hireª of a whore,ª° or the priceª of a dog,ª into the houseª of the LORDª thy Godª for any¹ vow:ª for¹ even¹ bothª these [are] abominationª unto the LORDª thy God.ª" {Deu 23:18} + "Afterª whom¹ is the kingª of Israelª come out?ª° afterª whom¹ dost thou¹ pursue?ª° afterª a deadª° dog,ª afterª aª flea.ª ...
