{2 Samuel 5:23} And when David 1732 enquired 7592 z8799 of the LORD, 3068 he said, 559 z8799 Thou shalt not x3808 go up; 5927 z8799 [but] fetch a compass 5437 z8685 x413 behind 310 them, and come 935 z8804 upon them over against 4136 x4480 the mulberry trees. 1057
inquired:
"And Davidª enquiredª° of the LORD,ª saying,ª° Shall I go upª° to¹ the Philistines?ª wilt thou deliverª° them into mine hand?ª And the LORDª saidª° unto¹ David,ª Go up:ª° for¹ I will doubtless²° deliverª°¹ the Philistinesª into thine hand.ª" {2Sm 5:19}
fetch:
"And thou shalt doª° to Aiª and her kingª as¹ thou didstª° unto Jerichoª and her king:ª only¹ the spoilª thereof, and the cattleª thereof, shall ye take for a preyª° unto yourselves: layª° thee an ambushª° for the cityª behindª¹ it." {Jsh 8:2} + "Then ye¹ shall rise upª° from the ambush,ª°¹ and seize²° upon¹¹ the city:ª for the LORDª your Godª will deliverª° it into your hand.ª" {Jsh 8:7} + "Therefore Davidª enquiredª° again¹ of God;ª and Godª saidª° unto him, Go not upª°¹ afterª them; turn awayª° from¹¹ them, and comeª° upon them over againstª¹ the mulberry trees.ª" {1Ch 14:14} + "Thenª touched¹ he²° theirª eyes,ª saying,ª° Accordingª to yourª faithª be itª° unto you.ª ... Andª theirª eyesª were opened;ª° andª Jesusª straitly chargedª° them,ª saying,ª° Seeª° [that] no manª knowª° [it]." {Mtt 9:29-30} + "Andª when heª was enteredª° intoª a ship,ª hisª disciplesª followedª° him.ª ... the mulberry trees:
The word bechaim, rendered mulberry trees, is rendered by Aquila, απιων, pear-trees, as the LXX also render in "Therefore Davidª enquiredª° again¹ of God;ª and Godª saidª° unto him, Go not upª°¹ afterª them; turn awayª° from¹¹ them, and comeª° upon them over againstª¹ the mulberry trees.ª ... And it shall be,¹ when thou shalt hearª°¹ a soundª of goingª in the topsª of the mulberry trees,ª [that] then¹ thou shalt go outª° to battle:ª for¹ Godª is gone forthª° beforeª thee to smiteª°¹ the hostª of the Philistines.ª" {1Ch 14:14-15}; and so the Vulgate in both places has pyrorum. The Rabbins, however, believe bacha signifies the mulberry-tree; with whom Ursinus agrees. It more probably denotes a large shrub which the Arabs still call baca, from its distilling an odoriferous gum, from bachah to distil, as tears. Of this opinion is Celsius, who quotes a passage from Abulfadi, who describes it as a balsam shrub, having longish leaves, and bearing a large fruit with an acrid taste. M. Forskal mentions a tree by the name of beca, with leaves rather ovated, smooth, entire. Its berries are poisonous to the sheep.
