now the:
"And when the inhabitantsª ° of Gibeonª heardª °¹ what¹ Joshuaª had doneª ° unto Jerichoª and to Ai,ª ... And the princesª saidª ° unto¹ them, Let them live;ª ° but let them be¹ hewersª ° of woodª and drawersª ° of waterª unto all¹ the congregation;ª as¹ the princesª had promisedª ° them." {Jsh 9:3-21}

the Amorites:
The Gibeonites were Hivites, not Amorites, as appears from "But all¹ the silver,ª and gold,ª and vesselsª of brassª and iron,ª [are] consecratedª unto the LORD:ª they shall comeª ° into the treasuryª of the LORD.ª" {Jsh 6:19}; but Amorites is a name often given to the Canaanites in general. "But in the fourthª generationª they shall come hither² again:ª °¹ for¹ the iniquityª of the Amoritesª [is] not¹ yetª ¹ full.ª" {Gen 15:16}

in his zeal:
"And thou shalt consumeª °¹ all¹ the peopleª which¹ the LORDª thy Godª shall deliverª ° thee; thine eyeª shall have no pityª °¹ upon¹ them: neither¹ shalt thou serveª °¹ their gods;ª for¹ that¹ [will be] a snareª unto thee." {Deu 7:16} + "And Saulª answered,ª ° Godª do¹ so² °¹ and more¹ also:² °¹ for¹ thou shalt surely² ° die,ª ° Jonathan.² ¹" {1Sm 14:44} + "And he tookª °¹ Agagª the kingª of the Amalekitesª alive,ª and utterly destroyedª ° all¹ the peopleª with the edgeª of the sword.ª ...
