{1 Chronicles 2:42} Now the sons 1121 of Caleb 3612 the brother 251 of Jerahmeel 3396 [were], Mesha 4337 his firstborn, 1060 which x1931 was the father 1 of Ziph; 2128 and the sons 1121 of Mareshah 4762 the father 1 of Hebron. 2275

Caleb:
This was not Caleb the son of Jephunneh, but Caleb the son of Hezron, and therefore called the brother of Jerahmeel. See the parallel texts. "The sonsª also of Hezron,ª that¹ were bornª ° unto him;¹ Jerahmeel,ª and Ram,ª and Chelubai.ª" {1Ch 2:9}, Chelubai, "And Calebª the sonª of Hezronª begatª ° [children] ofª Azubahª [his] wife,ª and of¹ Jerioth:ª her sonsª [are] these;¹ Jesher,ª and Shobab,ª and Ardon.ª ... And when Azubahª was dead,ª ° Calebª tookª ° unto him¹ Ephrath,ª which bareª ° him¹ Hur.ª" {1Ch 2:18-19} + "And after² that¹ Hezronª was deadª in Calebephratah,ª then Abiahª Hezron'sª wifeª bareª ° him¹ Ashurª the fatherª of Tekoa.ª" {1Ch 2:24}

his firstborn:
"Reuben,ª thou¹ [art] my firstborn,ª my might,ª and the beginningª of my strength,ª the excellencyª of dignity,ª and the excellencyª of power:ª" {Gen 49:3} + "And thou shalt sayª ° unto¹ Pharaoh,ª Thus¹ saithª ° the LORD,ª Israelª [is] my son,ª [even] my firstborn:ª ... the father:
i.e. the founder, Or, as the Targum renders, "the prince of the Ziphites;" for it was usual to call both the founder and the prince of a city its father.

Ziph:
"Ziph,ª and Telem,ª and Bealoth,ª" {Jsh 15:24} + "Then came upª ° the Ziphitesª to¹ Saulª to Gibeah,ª saying,ª ° Doth not¹ Davidª hide² ° himself¹ with¹ us in strong holdsª in the wood,ª in the hillª of Hachilah,ª which¹ [is] on the southª ¹ of Jeshimon?ª" {1Sm 23:19} + "And the Ziphitesª cameª ° unto¹ Saulª to Gibeah,ª saying,ª ° Doth not¹ Davidª hide² ° himself¹ in the hillª of Hachilah,ª [which is] beforeª ¹ Jeshimon?ª" {1Sm 26:1}

the father of Hebron:
