I have prepared:
"And Davidª preparedª° ironª in abundanceª for the nailsª for the doorsª of the gates,ª and for the joinings;ª and brassª in abundanceª without¹ weight;ª ... And Davidª said,ª° Solomonª my sonª [is] youngª and tender,ª and the houseª [that is] to be buildedª° for the LORDª [must be] exceedingª magnifical,ª° of fameª and of gloryª throughout all¹ countries:ª I will [therefore] now¹ make preparationª° for it. So Davidª preparedª° abundantlyª beforeª his death.ª" {1Ch 22:3-5} + "Now, behold,¹ in my troubleª I have preparedª° for the houseª of the LORDª an hundredª thousandª talentsª of gold,ª and a thousandª thousandª talentsª of silver;ª and of brassª and ironª without¹ weight;ª for¹ it is¹ in abundance:ª timberª also and stoneª have I prepared;ª° and thou mayest addª° thereto.¹ ... Of the gold,ª the silver,ª and the brass,ª and the iron,ª [there is] no¹ number.ª Ariseª° [therefore], and be doing,ª° and the LORDª be¹ with¹ thee." {1Ch 22:14-16}
with all:
"And thus¹ didª° Hezekiahª throughout all¹ Judah,ª and wroughtª° [that which was] goodª and rightª and truthª beforeª the LORDª his God.ª ... And in every¹ workª that¹ he beganª° in the serviceª of the houseª of God,ª and in the law,ª and in the commandments,ª to seekª° his God,ª he didª° [it] with all¹ his heart,ª and prospered.ª°" {2Ch 31:20-21} + "Whatsoever¹¹ thy handª findethª° to do,ª° doª° [it] with thy might;ª for¹ [there is] no¹ work,ª nor device,ª nor knowledge,ª nor wisdom,ª in the grave,ª whither¹¹ thou¹ goest.ª°" {Ecc 9:10} + "Forª toª [their] power,ª I bear record,ª° yea, andª beyondª [their] powerª [they were] willing of themselves;ª" {2Co 8:3} + "Andª whatsoeverªª² ye do,ª° doª° [it] heartily,ªª asª to the¹ Lord,ª andª notª unto men;ª" {Col 3:23} + "Asª every manª hath receivedª° the gift,ª [even so] ministerª° the sameª one to another,ªª asª goodª stewardsª of the manifoldª graceª of God.ª ... onyx stones:
Avney shoham, which was, probably, not the precious stone or gem called onyx, but a marble called in Greek onychites, which Pliny mentions as a stone Caramania; for one would hardly think that gems of any kind were used externally in such a building as the temple. Antiquity gave both stones this name, because of their resemblance to the nail of the finger. "And the goldª of thatª landª [is] good:ª there¹ [is] bdelliumª and the onyxª stone.ª" {Gen 2:12} + "And thou shalt setª° in it settingsª of stones,ª [even] fourª rowsª of stones:ª [the first] rowª [shall be] a sardius,ª a topaz,ª and a carbuncle:ª [this shall be] the firstª row.ª" {Exd 28:17} + "And the fourthª rowª a beryl,ª and an onyx,ª and a jasper:ª they shall be¹ setª° in goldª in their inclosings.ª" {Exd 28:20} + "And they wroughtª°¹ onyxª stonesª inclosed²° in¹ ouchesª of gold,ª graven,ª° as signetsª are graven,ª with¹ the namesª of the childrenª of Israel.ª" {Exd 39:6} + "And the fourthª row,ª a beryl,ª an onyx,ª and a jasper:ª [they were] inclosedª° in ouchesª of goldª in their inclosings.ª" {Exd 39:13} + "It cannot¹ be valuedª° with the goldª of Ophir,ª with the preciousª onyx,ª or the sapphire.ª" {Job 28:16} + "O thou afflicted,ª tossed with tempest,ª° [and] not¹ comforted,ª° behold,¹ I¹ will layª° thy stonesª with fair colours,ª and lay thy foundationsª° with sapphires.ª ... And I will makeª° thy windowsª of agates,ª and thy gatesª of carbuncles,ªª and all¹ thy bordersª of pleasantª stones.ª" {Isa 54:11-12} + "Andª the¹ buildingª of the¹ wallª of itª wasª° [of] jasper:ª andª the¹ cityª [was] pureª gold,ª like² unto¹ clearª glass.ª ... Andª the¹ twelveª gatesª [were] twelveª pearls;ª every²² severalª¹¹ gateª wasª° ofª oneª pearl:ª andª the¹ streetª of the¹ cityª [was] pureª gold,ª as it wereª transparentª glass.ª" {Rev 21:18-21}
glistering stones:
Avney phuch seems to denote a kind of black marble, so called from its colour resembling stibium. So Vulgate quasi stibinos.
marble stones:
Avney shayish is rendered in the Targum avney marmoraiyah, "stones of marble," and by the LXX, and Vulgate Παριον or Παρινον, or marmor Parium, "Parium marble," which was remarkable for its bright white colour. Josephus says that the temple was built of large blocks of white marble, beautifully polished, so as to produce a most splendid appearance.
