Since the day:
"Whereas¹ I have not¹ dweltª ° in [any] houseª since the timeª ¹ that I brought upª °¹ the childrenª of Israelª out of Egypt,ª ¹ even to¹ this¹ day,ª but have¹ walkedª ° in a tentª and in a tabernacle.ª ... neither chose:
The judges and Saul were chosen by God, for a season, to be rulers of Israel; but not to establish a permanent and hereditary authority over that people, as was the case with David. This clause is wanting in the parallel passage of Kings; but it helps to clear the sense. "And Samuelª saidª ° to¹ all¹ the people,ª Seeª ° ye him whom¹ the LORDª hath chosen,ª ° that¹ [there is] none¹ like him¹ among all¹ the people?ª And all¹ the peopleª shouted,ª ° and said,ª ° God saveª ° the king.ª" {1Sm 10:24} + "And Samuelª saidª ° to¹ Saul,ª Thou hast done foolishly:ª ° thou hast not¹ keptª °¹ the commandmentª of the LORDª thy God,ª which¹ he commandedª ° thee: for¹ now¹ would the LORDª have establishedª °¹ thy kingdomª upon¹ Israelª for² ever.ª ¹ ... But now¹ thy kingdomª shall not¹ continue:ª ° the LORDª hath soughtª ° him a manª after his own heart,ª and the LORDª hath commandedª ° him [to be] captainª over¹ his people,ª because¹ thou hast not¹ keptª ° [that]¹ which¹ the LORDª commandedª ° thee." {1Sm 13:13-14} + "For¹ rebellionª [is as] the sinª of witchcraft,ª and stubbornnessª ° [is as] iniquityª and idolatry.ª Because¹ thou hast rejectedª °¹ the wordª of the LORD,ª he hath also rejectedª ° thee from [being] king.ª ¹" {1Sm 15:23} + "But my mercyª shall not¹ depart awayª ° from¹ him, as¹ I tookª ° [it] from¹ ¹ Saul,ª whom¹ I put awayª ° beforeª ¹ thee. ...
