Jeremiah:
The princes seem to have wholly neglected Jeremiah, till on this occasion they wanted his sanction to their purpose of going to Egypt. In order to induce him to favour them, they applied to him with one consent, in the most respectful and plausible manner. They used language to prepossess him with a favourable opinion of them, and to move his compassion; and, in words expressing great humility, they entreated his prayers in their behalf, and that he would enquire of the Lord what he would have them to do. The prophet readily acquiesced; and doubted not but that he should receive an answer from God, which he would unreservedly declare to them; and they called the Lord to witness that they would implicitly follow his directions.
I will pray:
"And Mosesª said,ª° Behold,¹ I¹ go outª° from¹¹ thee, and I will intreatª°¹ the LORDª that the swarmsª [of flies] may departª° from Pharaoh,ª¹ from his servants,ª¹ and from his people,ª¹ to morrow:ª butª let not¹ Pharaohª deal deceitfullyª° any moreª° in notª letting¹ the peopleª goª° to sacrificeª° to the LORD.ª" {Exd 8:29} + "Moreover¹ as for me,ª God forbid²¹ that I should sinª°¹ against the LORDª in ceasingª°¹ to prayª° for¹ you: but I will teachª° you the goodª and the rightª way:ª" {1Sm 12:23} + "Brethren,ª myª heart'sª desireª¹ andª prayerª toª Godª forª Israelª is,ª° that²² they might be saved.ª¹" {Rom 10:1}
whatsoever:
"The prophetª that¹¹ hath a dream,ª let him tellª° a dream;ª and he that¹¹ hath my word,ª let him speakª° my wordª faithfully.ª What¹ [is] the chaffª to¹ the wheat?ª saithª° the LORD.ª" {Jer 23:28} + "And Micaiahª said,ª° [As] the LORDª liveth,ª what¹ the LORDª saithª° unto¹ me, that will I speak.ª° ... And the kingª saidª° unto¹ him, How¹ many¹ timesª shall I¹ adjureª° thee that¹ thou tellª°¹ me nothing¹ but¹ [that which is] trueª in the nameª of the LORD?ª" {1Kg 22:14-16} + "And Micaiahª said,ª° [As] the LORDª liveth,ª even¹¹ what¹ my Godª saith,ª° that will I speak.ª° ... And the kingª saidª° to¹ him, How many¹¹ timesª shall I¹ adjureª° thee that¹ thou sayª° nothing¹ but¹ the truthª to¹ me in the nameª of the LORD?ª" {2Ch 18:13-15} + "And thou shalt speakª°¹ my wordsª unto¹ them, whether¹ they will hear,ª° or whether¹ they will forbear:ª° for¹ they¹ [are] most rebellious.ª" {Ezk 2:7}
I will keep:
"And he said,ª° What¹ [is] the thingª that¹ [the LORD] hath saidª° unto¹ thee? I pray thee¹ hideª° [it] not¹ from¹ me: Godª do¹ so²°¹ to thee, and more¹ also,²°¹ if¹ thou hideª° [any] thingª from¹ me of all¹¹ the thingsª that¹ he saidª° unto¹ thee. ... And Samuelª toldª° him¹ every¹ whit,ª and hidª° nothing¹ from¹ him. And he said,ª° It¹ [is] the LORD:ª let him doª° what seemethª him good.ª" {1Sm 3:17-18} + "I have not¹ hidª° thy righteousnessª withinª my heart;ª I have declaredª° thy faithfulnessª and thy salvation:ª I have not¹ concealedª° thy lovingkindnessª and thy truthª from the greatª congregation.ª" {Psa 40:10} + "[And] howª I kept backª° nothingª that was profitableª° [unto you],¹ but² have shewedª° you,ª andª have taughtª° youª publickly,ª andª from² house to house,ª¹" {Act 20:20} + "Forª I have²° notª² shunnedª° to¹ declareª° unto youª allª the¹ counselª of God.ª" {Act 20:27}
