Sitting on the ground was a posture of mourning and deep distress. Hence the coin struck by Vespasian, on the capture of Jerusalem, has on the obverse side a palm tree, the emblem of Judea, and under it a woman, the emblem of Jerusalem, sitting down, with her elbow on her knee, and her head supported by her hand, with the legend Judea capta. "How¹ doth the cityª sitª° solitary,ª [that was] fullª of people!ª [how] is she become¹ as a widow!ª she [that was] greatª among the nations,ª [and] princessª among the provinces,ª [how] is she become¹ tributary!ª" {Lam 1:1}
and keep:
"He sittethª° aloneª and keepeth silence,ª° because¹ he hath borneª° [it] upon¹ him." {Lam 3:28} + "Why¹¹ do we¹ sit¹ still?²° assemble²° yourselves,¹ and let us enterª° into¹ the defencedª cities,ª and let us be silentª° there:¹ for¹ the LORDª our Godª hath put us to silence,ª° and given us waterª of gallª to drink,ª° because¹ we have sinnedª° against the LORD.ª" {Jer 8:14} + "Therefore¹ the prudentª° shall keep silenceª° in that¹ time;ª for¹ it¹ [is] an evilª time.ª" {Ams 5:13} + "And the songsª of the templeª shall be howlingsª° in that¹ day,ª saithª° the Lordª GOD:ª [there shall be] manyª dead bodiesª in every¹ place;ª they shall cast [them] forthª° with silence.ª°" {Ams 8:3}
